Well, I went 2 miles instead of 3. I usually run first thing in the morning before I eat, but I waited to long and should have eaten a little something... I can never seem to find a balance between the 2...

Oh well, I did some weights today. Still not 100% because my hand is still healing, but I'm slowly able to do more and more.

ARGH. I had my first experience with hills tonight. Where I live there are no hills. My legs are killing me!!! I've wondered how to train on hills if we don't have any, but that's another conversation for another time. Also, the streets here are terrible. We already knew they were really bad to drive on, but they're equally bad to run on. I gave up about half a mile in and stuck to the sidewalks as much as possible.

Yeah! Hills are an entirely different phenomenon! I'm glad we have them around here though because it does add a whole new dimension to my runs - and I'm actually finally getting good at them. Granted none of them are super steep, but there are some pretty good ones depending on the route I take.

I'm not running today. Some of my family is talking about a bike ride, so I'm going to "save up" for that - especially since I don't have my new road bike yet.

My legs feel shredded today! My thighs and hips are sore from the hills...from the knee down, I'm aching from the terrible road conditions.

Needless to say, my feet are up today...at least for now.

Did my final 3 mile run of the week on Saturday morning. I was doing fairly well, although I had walked a little bit (maybe half-a-lap) in the first two miles, when I started feeling a cramp coming on. And it was in the worst and most embarrassing place ever - my right hiney cheek! I walked 1 lap, hoping that it would leave, but it stayed around, so I stopped to sit down for several minutes. It finally went away and I was able to get through the last three laps to complete the distance, but that was so-o-o-o frustrating to have the stupid cramp come up in such an awkward place! I'm praying that this is not a recurring theme with me as I taper off on distance going into the race. This week it's 2.75 miles each time, so hopefully that will give my tush a break.

That reminds me...what can be done about cramps mid-run besides stopping? A week or so ago I got matching cramps on each side of my rib cage--right at the bottom where my abs start. (Guess it wasn't actually cramps in my rib cage... ) Anyway, I was pretty far from home and not entirely willing to lose my pace, so I kept running but I really thought I was going to pass out a couple of times.

Someone talk to me about cramps--what causes them, what prevents them, what stops them, etc.

I can't say I've ever had problems with cramping - aside from some annoying but mild cramping in my rib cage/stomach area. I actually have never had it so bad though that I've stopped my run. I just focus more on my breathing, maybe slow it down a bit and continue on and they usually go away. I think those type of cramps are usually related to breathing too shallow. Stomach cramping is more from running too soon after eating... Fortunately, I don't get them often.

Aside from that, the only cramping I occasionally get is in my feet (bottoms) when I'm doing stretching and I know that's when I haven't been drinking enough water.

Here is a website with some good ideas and things to try.

-----------

Yesterday I went for my first bike ride since my accident. We went probably around 8 miles. I felt good enough to do some racing with one of my young cousins. However, when we went out on the road, I found myself getting a wee bit nervous around curbs...

I'm a little stiff from that so, I ran 2 miles this morning. It was funny when I reached what the 2 miles. I looked at my watch and couldn't understand what happened. I had just barely beat my personal best. I couldn't understand that because my pace was ok, but not that fast. Then after walking for a minute, I realized that I stopped at the wrong spot on my loop and had just a bit further to go...

Had a new cramp today--bladder cramp? Or at least bladder pain. I'm doing a little research now...but it appears I might have been dehydrated when I left to run. I didn't drink much water--or anything--today at all.

However...as of tonight, June 16, I have run the same number of miles I ran all together in May. But I ran them 23 minutes faster!!! Woohoo!!! I'm really excited about that. I think I'm good to go now and it's awesome.

Last week was the best week yet since I got my new pedometer 10 weeks ago and started tracking both steps and mileage. My steps for the week were 76,150 (with only 3 days being 10,000+) and my mileage (from running & walking) was 35.99 miles. Not too shabby, but I want top do better than that. Eventually I'd like to be up to 10,000 every day of the week - and I'll get there . . . just not sure when!

Last night's run was a really good one. It was 2.75 miles and the weather was absolutely perfect - temperatures in the mid 70's with low hunidity and a gentle breeze! Thank you, Lord!! I ran the first mile and a quarter and probably could have gone a bit farther, but decided to not push it so I walked a lap. Ran the next mile, walked another lap, and then ran the "bell lap." I decided to time myself for this one and came across the line in 3:14:81, which is not too shabby considering that I was 2.5 miles into the run when I did it. If I can keep that pace (or even slighty faster) for the entire race, I'll come in with a sub-40:00 5K - which would absolutely thrill me to death! My group leader/trainer has said before that he's glad that the naturally gifted runners in our church have come out to join the group, are following the prgram and doing well, but the people that give him the most enjoyment and satisfaction are the guys like me - much less than naturally gifted - who come out week after week and give it their all, doing the best that they can and having a ball at it. And I've got to admit it . . . I am having a ball, despite the exhaustion that I feel sometimes. My body may be tired, but my heart is turning somersaults, back flips, cartwheels, and everything else when I get through. And that feeling makes it all worthwhile!

Last night I did core work...woohoo...and played a generous amount of Dance Dance Revolution. That's a workout for sure. I'm anxious to run tonight, though, to keep my mileage up. I'm looking at running my first 5K mid-July. (In under 30:00.)

I woke up with major congestion from allergies. I don't usually have that much trouble this time of year, but this year has been awful - for pretty much everyone. However, I ran 2 miles and did some weights.

I also picked up my new bike last night and did 2 miles on it last night to try it out and see what I need to adjust! It's a 500x better ride than my other bike. I am really looking forward to taking it for a long ride - although I need to do something about the hard, skinny seat... Ouch!

Thanks! I was like a kid in a candy store!

Well, there's a fun run benefitting a local food bank on Saturday. I want to do it, but I'm feeling zero energy right now... Plus, that would be the first chance I get for a long bike ride... Guess we'll see what happens.

I had the absolute WORST run tonight. From the beginning...I was tight, my legs hurt, I was tired. I gave up after a mile. One. Stinking. Mile.

And do you know what my husband had the nerve to tell me?!! "Not every run can be a great run."

Aw...don't feel bad. We've all had days like that. A mile is a mile.

I've only done 8 miles this week so far. I haven't done my normal long runs on Sundays because of my knee. It's getting a lot better and have improved my time from 15 to 10. 5 on average. I hope not to get injured. I think it was the 25 miles a week that I've been doing for a few weeks there that made my knees a little sore. Now I'm cutting back to only 15 miles per week. I hope to do maybe 5 to 7 miles in the morning.

I took another day off... Our meeting of course went late and I was already exhausted so I needed that extra hour of sleep this morning more than I needed a run...

Oh . . . good 'ole running cramps! I have been running for years both short and long distance races (2 miles to Marathon). Here is my take on cramps.

Why they happen (listed from most to least prevalent):
1. New to running or getting back into running after a long break. Our bodies need a chance to get used to the bouncing again.
2. Not hydrated enough. We need about 64 oz. of water per day. Shoot for 8 oz. eight times per day.
3. Running too soon after eating.

What has worked for me when I get severe cramps while running has everything to do with controlling my breathing. I can usually run through the cramps when I begin to breathe deeply in through my nose and out through my mouth. This is difficult when in the middle of a run when winded. But, as I force myself to take slow, deep breathes in a couple of minutes I'm rolling again. I find that my cramps hit me the most when I haven't been training consistently or I have increased the intensity or distance.

Hope this helps!

I find that deep breathing helps to a degree, but when I get cramps, my run is ruined. I heard some people say to stop and raise your arms up while breathing deeply and it should dissipate. I also heard that pinching that side of the ribs that hurt helps. I've tried them all, and the thing that helps is to walk or job it out until it disappears.

I did an hour run today with no agenda. No mileage, no time to beat. I even walked at times, and stopped at the stop lights when I had to. I did about 5.6 miles. I'm ok with it. Lately, I've been so tired that I can't seem to get the excitement of running. I did 4 miles yesterday at a really fast paced that it really tired me out. Time to rest these legs.

I ran 2 miles this morning. Tomorrow is another fun run (the next one in our area that I would want to do is in about a month) and I'm debating whether to do the 5K or take a long bike ride on my new bike... Decisions... Decisions...

Speaking of stomach cramps...I have them right now...right this moment. It's funny because I just gave an advice this morning about them. I haven't gotten them in so long and Ive forgotten how they feel. But man, I hate this. I don't know what brought this on. All I can remember is I ran about 5.5 miles this morning, had a huge buffet, went for an hour of mountain biking. After that is when felt the cramp. I finished a whole bottle of water, then did an hour of bouldering and the cramp didn't go away. It got worse. SO, I don't know. Hydration doesn't work. Deep breathing doesn't work. Now, I'm gonna take a nap and hope to get up without any more of this stupid cramp!!!
