Good job, Duane!!! That's how I felt when I realized I was at an 11:30 pace the other day! I'll bet you can easily do sub-40:00 when it's time for your race!!!

I think I'm going to try doing scripture memorization while I run. Anyone ever try it?

Matt was telling me last night that he regularly prays Col. 1:9-14 while he's running, especially for his wife (Ann Marie) and his new baby girl (Caroline). He tells me that trying to recite something you've memorized, whether Scripture or anything else, while you're running is very tough. It truly forces you to concentrate. MOF, CW's own Magdalene has been doing her Scripture memorization while walking for the last year-and-a-half to two years. So it can be done, but it's definitely hard.

Yeah, I'm thinking that reciting will keep me from thinking about the running. I tend to do better if I get distracted by something else--conversation, watching kids in the playground, looking at dogs in backyards, etc. I figure if I'm going to be distracted, it might as well be by scripture.

Great job Duane & Stella! Keep it up! One goal at a time - one step at a time! It's really coming all together!

I was so tired again this morning that by the time I dragged my body out of bed, I knew I didn't have time for a long run, so I figured it was a good day for sprints. I ran 1 mile alternating sprints & jogs. I was reminded how much I need to work on sprints! Phew! But it felt good and I'm glad I drug myself out of bed to do it!

And that reminds me that there is so much more to go after just...you, know...running.

So far, I've done 11 miles since Monday (4, 4 and 3) but I went a little faster. I'm doing 10 min mile now--pain free. I'll do 4 more tomorrow then head out to the lake to do some mountain biking and rock climbing all weekend. No matter what I do, I can never forget running. I love it. I've been running fro 20 years, and it is still my number 1 activity. Of course, for keeping in shape and developing really lean muscle, I also fell in love with Yoga and man, I love how it developed my abs and my arms.

Great job! I'm planning on a long run (for me that's 3 miles) tomorrow, then a long bike ride on Saturday - we'll see what for Sunday. It's supposed to get very hot this weekend (low 100s). Ugh!

How do you do anything when the temp reach 100? How long do you go? YOu must be used tothe heat. I ran today using the treadmill in our clubhouse where it is airconditioned, but it was still too hot when I was running.

Do you bring tonnes of water or do you go in shaded areas? I'm hoping where I'll be going this weekend will have shades on the trail. It's an easy trail...pretty flat with little hills. I'm hoping to develop my riding skills because I'm taking my daughter downhill mountain biking and neither one of us are strong mountain bikers.

It's actually why I run early in the mornings. I can't handle the heat. It just wipes you out and you sweat a river. Even early in the morning at 60 something degrees, I sweat like a pig...

Last summer at this time, I was only running maybe a mile. I guess we'll see how I do with the longer distances. The biggest challenge is staying hydrated. I'm not going far enough that I have to drink during my run, but I try to be hydrated before I run, then drink a lot after. On my bikerides, I bring water with me. I made the mistake of not doing that even when it was cooler out and I was dying by the time I got back home.

By the way, is that you in your avatar?

This is what I do. I'm running about two miles in the evenings...usually it's hovering between 85 and 95 degrees. I think you do acclimate to it somewhat, even though I MUCH prefer running in the snow.

I'm impressed! I don't even like sitting outside when it's that hot (which is almost our entire summer)... I used to like it, but when I headed off to college and lived a few years in a much more temperate climate, well, I got used to it and really like it. I've just never liked the heat since then...

Yea, that's me and Abi taken last Sunday. I'm in love with the dog. She's not mine. I'm not allowed to have a dog in my condo. But if I can, I'd run out and buy one right now. I would so love to have a dog to run and hike with.

There was this dog in one of the Colorado mountain trails that actually hikes with people all the way to the summit. If the dog likes you, he'll summit with you (14000 ft). But if he doesn't, he'll snub you. That's so cute. I'd like to go to that trail one day and meet that dog and see if he likes me, lol.

The thing is, you have to keep moving to keep the natural air conditioning. If you stop, you get heat stroke.

Nice to see you! It's always fun to put a face with a name!

If you really want a dog, I have a cocker that some days is available for adoption! Just kidding! I love my dog, but she can drive me batty sometimes!

That's funny about the dog in Colorado. I don't do too much with my girl because she doesn't last very long. She's not very big - I think that's the problem. Plus, if she sees any birds (and we have a lot around here), she loses any semblence of proper leash "etiquette" and wants to take me with HER to go get the birds...

True. The problem is, the heat makes me lose all motivation to actually move!

Ugh! I shortened my planned 3 mile run to 2.5 miles. It was only 8:30 in the morning but it was already in the 80s and I was hot, I was queazy (apparently even eating a tiny bit is too much before I run... ) and I just wanted it to end... Oh well. I ran it in 23:43 which I didn't feel was too bad for sweating like a pig and feeling like I was going to lose the little bit I had for breakfast...

Last night was another good run for me. I did my 2.5 miles in under 30 minutes, which is a really fast pace for a guy my size. But the most important thing is that I recovered realy quick after eating supper (a bowl of Special K) and drinking about 8 oz. of G2. I was feeling pretty perky . . . until I laid down in bed. After that, I was gone until the alarm went off this morning! Tomorrow is another 2.5 miles, then Tuesday's last pre-race group workout is only 2 miles, and Thursday is the BIG DAY! Can y'all tell I'm excited!?!

That's great! Have you ever done a race? I love them! Not that I'd ever win, but it's so much fun to be out there with a bunch of other runners and pushing yourself to the limit.

This is actually going to be my second 5K race, Kristin. My first one was last September 1st, the Charleston Distance Run 5K (43:28.25). It's held in conjunction with the CDR 15 mile race and the 10 mile walk. The Distance Run itself has slipped a little in it's popularity in recent years; there used to be over 1500 entrants, but now only around 850-900 runners. The 5K, though, keeps getting bigger - I guess people are getting older and can't do the hill section of the race anymore. I don't know if you've ever heard of Harry Cordelos, the blind man from San Francisco, or not, but he has been coming for years to run in the CDR, but has switched to the 5K. In fact, one year, they even had a triathlon here around the same time, and he participated in that as well. He's a truly wonderful brother in Christ, and gave his testimony at a local church once. He's due back for this years CDR 5K on Aug. 30th, and I'll be there as well. I'll do one race in the fall, and that will be it for the season, although I'll keep up the running all winter - just no racing. You're right, though, Kristin. It is really neat to be out there with everyone else, whether you know them or not. The camaraderie is wonderful, especially at the finish line and refreshment tent.

My first 5K is mid-July. I don't expect to finish too strongly, but I wanted to get a race under my belt this summer. I'm pretty positive I can do sub-40:00.

For all my talking about running in the heat, it just about did me in last night. Well, the humidity did. I actually ran into a building to get a drink and then ran back out...I've never had to do that before!

Duane - I haven't heard of Harry Cordelos but that's really cool! At many of the races around here, we have one young man who frequently races in a specialized hand-crank wheelchair. And I do love the races. I'm trying really hard to get my mom to come and out walk some of them because we have a lot of folks who walk too.

Stellaluna - Tell us before you do your race! We'll be rooting for you! I hear you about the heat. It's supposed to be boiling hot this weekend. I did a long bike ride this morning - early!

It was hard getting up this morning, but I knew if I didn't get my run in before church, it would happen. It's supposed to be boiling hot today. Even at around 7:30 when I did my run, I was sweating like a pig... I had hoped to do 3 miles, but shortened it to 2.5 miles. I think I'm still tired from my bike ride yesterday and I was getting hungry...
