Yes, I did the best I could...and then I wanted to crawl home. As is my biggest running fault, I'm sure I started out too fast. And yes, my initial fartleks were too long. I shortened them later on in the run, but it was too late. I did feel better about what I did after I got home and looked at my distance and saw that I went 3.3 miles. That's a lot further than I thought.

Tonight I'm going to the gym for cross training and I think it will be a good break for me. I haven't been to the gym in awhile.

stellaluna--okay, so you know what you need to do differently next time. As long as you learn from your "mistakes" there is no such thing as a "bad run".

LOL...I know, but they sure feel yucky sometimes!!!

Remind me when your marathon is. Will you be tapering anytime soon?

My marathon is October 19th. Yes, I am tapering. My "long run" this weekend is only 8miles! I changed coaches last month and we are scrambling to make race day plans. He has some data to use, but not nearly enough. My goal is only to run a good race.

Why did you change coaches? Where does one get a coach? Do I need a coach?

This was my second coach. All season I felt like I was undertrained, but my coach kept telling me I was fine. After my last race--again undertrained--I knew it just wasn't working out. He was a nice guy and all, he just wasn't coaching me like I needed.

I decided I wanted to work with a coach when I realized I could make something happen. Before that, I was turning to the volunteer coaches with my running group. I asked my doctor, one of those coaches, for advice. He gave me one name. I worked with that coach for a year and a half and really progressed. However, this coach was in a serious accident and was unable to coach all of his athletes, so I gave up my slot. He has gone on to coach the US triathletes in Beijing!

My second coach I found through the online training log that my first coach used. Since he was from my home town I was able to do a "background check" on him. Gotta love small towns!!! He's a very nice guy, very active in the triathlete community, etc. He just didn't work out for me.

My third coach I found through my online running message board, Kickrunners. He coaches several athletes there and I've been able to watch them train and race. So when I needed a coach, it was a no brainer. However, it generally takes several months to get on the same page to start training. I started with him with just one month before my race. And I was undertrained at that...

When to get a coach? When you realize you have taken yourself as far as you can and you are still hungry for more.

Where to find a coach? Best bet is word of mouth. But, even then sometimes that's not enough.

I think I'm a ways off from taking myself as far as I can go. If I may ask, how much does a coach charge?

My coach works cheaply but is merciless.

P.S. I've confirmed I can "run" a mile in 18 minutes or less, so I may actually be able to defeat a few "seasoned citizens" in my race. Although, I expect it will be close.

Ha ha HPD. You sound like me. I am not much faster.

I did my intervals today. Was very nice out. This weekend will be almost 80 again. Shorts weather.

My first coach was $200/month. He was way more coach than I needed, but I have no regrets. He's an Olympic coach, so he's working with the best of the best, as well as new athlete like I was.

My second coach was $75/month for triathletes, $50 for runners/duathletes. Obviously less experience.

My current coach is $41/month.

Your coach is a very nice lady who can make chicken spaghetti. That's like you getting paid to run!

$41 a month for a coach, or even $50, doesn't sound like very much. I expected most of them to be in that $200 range.

I took the day off from running and went to the gym for weight training. Blah dee blah dee blah. I did 10 minutes on that moonwalk machine thingy and walked a mile on the treadmill. I put the incline really high and pretended I was hiking.

Fartlek means speed play in Swedish. The idea is that you run at different speeds for a certain period of time or mileage.

Thanks! I guess I did a less rigid version of that this morning. One mile of sprints, jogs and walks. The sprints were fairly long though which is why one mile...

I had a good run tonight...3 miles, 35:00. That's close to my Race for the Cure time!

It's hot and windy here--feels more like July than October.

Well, I couldn't drag myself out of bed again this morning, but I ran tonight after work - 3 miles. I didn't think I'd make it that far because I've been dragging all day, but I did pretty well and got a decent time.

I walked 3 miles trying to figure out a new route, was kind of boring and am tired of people driving like maniacs through the parking lots so this weekend I am going to the parks to run and walk. Almost got backed into again

Yikes! You need to get an air horn or something or maybe wear strobe lights...

An airhorn would be awesome! You would totally scare the you-know-what out of people!

The Chicago Marathon is Sunday, but I guess they're not broadcasting. I can't find it anywhere. I watched a marathon a few weeks ago from North Carolina, so it seems this one would be on TV since it's a big one.

An air horn wouldn't matter, they are either backing up without looking on their cell phone, or cannot judge the distance correctly and pull out too far and can't turn. You'd think it was the first time that some of these people ever drove a car.

Yes I know someone who is running Chicgago. Very few marathons are on tv, and they only cover Boston on one cable channel that it was one of the premium ones. Found out someone at my work qualified and will run Boston this year.. and he's around 60 years old..

Even our Freep Press Marathon gets no mention on the airtime, and you get one small article in the sports section. Some people get excited that they get to run into Canada.. well it looks the same across the border except the signs are in the metric system. Its not exciting television or it doesn't get enough ratings.

The Columbus Marathon isn't broadcast here in Columbus. Sometimes the news will find a staff member doing it, so they might show that during the news. Other than that, nuthin'! Columbus is getting big--12,000 this year. It is next Sunday.

I almost got hit on my run this morning. Another person turning right that never looked right as they were turning. Happens in my neighborhood alllllllllll the time...

I did my last "long" run today. 8miles. I am coming down with something and am just dragging. Made it through the run, but my numbers totally stink. A bad dress rehearsal means a good opening night, right???

Ds3 will be racing tomorrow. There's a little 5K that he's wanted to do. He had to prove he was up to it. Last week he did 3miles on the track, so I went and signed him up. Not sure how they are doing age groups. He'll either race 11 and under or 11-14. I'm certain he'll run a good race!

Some races around here are 18 and under and I don't think that's fair to the little kids. There are a lot that are 12 and under that run.

I actually thought of the airhorn on my run last night. I'm running down the sidewalk (this section is actually a bit above the road and separated by a chain link fence) and some moron in a cable repair truck comes up behind me and starts honking right behind me... Scared me to DEATH! I wanted to race after him and say don't EVER do that again!

The free press marathon is next sunday as well. There are 16,000 registered runners but I am not sure how it is split up because there hundreds of relay teams and there is a half , 5k, handicapped, etc.

For all my runner friends:

The very first time you tried running, how far could you go at a time? How long before you could run a mile without taking a walk break? What tips and suggestions do you have for a first-timer? (I already have the shoes, fitted by a pedorthist.)

I could go a minute or so

Try the couch to 5k program:

http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

I'm on my 3rd time doing it because I took a break from running over the summer when it got hot.

Most people run too hard and they hate it because they feel like they are going to die or throw up.

Theres also a method by Jeff Galloway of running for a few minutes and taking a 1 min walk break, even in races.
