Recently checked out Black Book (Zwartboek). 'Already posted such response on the "I Just Saw..." thread.

I recently watched three of Werner Herzog's films. The first was a documentary about workers in Antartica called Encounters at the End of the World, which I got to see at the Nashville Film Festival. I also watched Aguire, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo.

Just caught a glimpse/viewing of Happily Ever After (Ils se marient et beaucoup des enfants). I don't know what to make of Yvan Attal's script, often times bordering between a romantic comedy and a French take on Neil LaBute's Your Friends & Neighbors--especially the ending. It's a bit caustic at times, while simultaneously being funny and romantic, coupled with a Sonic Youth soundtrack. Charlotte Gainsbourg I think is still stellar in this film, co-starring her real-life hubby/director-actor, Yvan Attal. I think Attal and Gainsbourg could pass off as a modern throwback to 1930's/1940's, Hollywood thespian couples.

Currently, I'm watching Shohei Imamura's Vengeance Is Mine... pretty disturbing stuff--considering it's based on a true story.

The only one I've watched before was "It's a beautiful Life". Although it's sad, I enjoyed this movie.

I've seen dozens. The most recent was a DVD I discovered of a Mandarin movie called The Promise. Older ones that I've seen and still liked include Das Boot, Kenta Fukasaku's Battle Royale, and a classic that most wushu fans probably have: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Have you watched any foreign language movies? If so,which ones?

The Passion Of The Christ was the only one I have ever seen. That movie was in Hebrew, Latin, and Aramaic.

I've seen many, but the one that really sticks in my mind is The Gospel According to Saint Matthew, by Pasolini. Utterly amazing movie, not the least of which is his willingness to experiment. One scene in particluar stands out, where Herod's men are killing all the baby Jewish boys two years of age and younger. Pasolini films it without diaolgue, but over the horrific events places the song, Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child, as done by Ethel Waters. Gave me chills.
