So for all the homebirthers, what are you having on hand for your midwife team? I want to have some munchies for everyone, but not sure what to have. I thought maybe just some fresh fruit and veggies cut up in the frigde. Maybe a nice homemade trail mix for them and hubby too. I want to make sure everyone, including me, has plenty of fast, healthy fuel around to eat. What is the best thing for a laboring mama to eat? I mean, besides what she wants. And is anyone having prayer partners covering their labor? I have one friend, thank you Rachel!, and I want to get two more. I feel that even though I've read up on a lot of stuff, it is still the Lord who will bring this babe into the world. What do you think?

Today I'm planning a "plan the menu and make things that need to get made for labour" day (a bit late, I suppose, but ya know!). I'm about to do some research as to what's good for labouring mamas to eat. I'll post some links in a bit =) I hadn't thought of having some quick snacks and food for the midwives - good idea!! And I LOVE the idea of prayer partners for labour. I know my community will be praying whenever we let them know (I'll be sending out an email to them all to advise them!), as will my mom and Brad's mom. And of course, as Donna said, the ladies on here!!

From HERE: * tea * fruit juice * lightly cooked eggs * crisp toast and butter * plain biscuits * clear broth * cooked fruits From HERE: "It might help to think about the foods you would eat if you are recovering from a stomach flu. You would not start eating pizza right away! In fact, the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group (a well-known source of evidence-based information and research) recommends the use of a low fat, low residue diet during labor. Here is a list of some of the top foods that women often enjoy eating during labor:" * Plenty of fluids - water, diluted juice, electrolyte-balanced beverages * Toast or ½ bagel with jam * Cereals - hot or cold * Eggs * Pancakes * Pasta (light sauce or parmesan) * Tea with sugar or honey * Sorbet or ice cream * Jello * Baked or mashed potato * Soup - non-creamy * Mashed banana or mango * Applesauce * Yogurt * ½ Granola or cereal bar THIS article gives a good description of WHY eating is important during labour - and gives some good examples of foods to eat. From HERE: "In early labor it is a good idea to have a nutritious meal so you can keep up your energy levels. Early labor sometimes lasts for several hours so there is no need to deprive yourself. Complex carbohydrates with B vitamins, such as whole grains, beans and starchy vegetables, are especially helpful." And HERE is a great blog post with current research and evidence about eating/drinking in labour. Hope that all helps some people! I, personally, am planning to make some trail mix, have some popsicles and freezies on hand, as well as gatorade, I am going to make some yogurt/fruit popsicles, and I plan to have a variety of foods around to munch if I want to. Eggs are great - you can hardboil them in advance. How long does a hard-boiled egg keep in the fridge? Can you freeze them?

Don't eat anything you can't stand to throw up. That's my only caveat to eating that I've placed on myself. There are certain foods I will not eat, when ill, simply because I've seen how they come back up.

I think just having lots of healthy veggie/fruits snacks would be good for the midwife and hubby and other child. I remember my one doctor eating applesauce and drinking oj while waiting for me to deliver (she worked like a midwife...she was just a midwife in disguise as a family practitioner...lol....). As for yourself....don't be surprised if you aren't hungry at all...I start labor and my appetite drops to nothing real fast. That is just me though. Granola, fruit, veggies, cheese would be good...things that keep up your blood sugar but don't cause it to spike and drop (which is the leading cause of nausea in labor...the blood sugar dropping when you get to transistion stage...)...mostly just lots of fluids to keep yourself hydrated (the second leading cause of nausea in childbirth).

I was told by a midwife (haven't tried it myself) that pineapple tastes the same coming up as it does going down. Just in case that helps anyone. lol

The only deliveries where I did NOT get the feeling I needed to vomit were ones where I HAD eaten a little bit while in labor (had to force myself to eat 2 bites of lasagnas and 2 bites of salad with one and to eat 4 bites of vegetable beef soup with the other one!).....

My midwife recommends Smart Water instead of Gatorade. It tastes like plain water. It has electrolytes like Gatorade, but no sugar. I have 2 bottles of Smart Water and a few different kinds of fruit juice to sip on during labor.

I love having a midwife for the simple reason that if you are delivering at the hospital, they TELL you to bring a cooler full of goodies ... whereas if you were in "normal" L&D with an OB, it is nothing by mouth (other than ice chips) the entire labour plus 2-3 hours afterwards. With midwives, the motto is "The fuller the cooler, the shorter the labour"

Kathryn, maybe if you don't want to notify the church when you are in labor, you could send out an email a few weeks before your due date reminding them that you are having a homebirth and in consideration of that, to please not drop by unannounced. You can also make a sign for your front door (and any other doors anyone might us), saying something like, "Laboring Momma...please come back later if you are not part of the necessary crew." LOL
