So for all the homebirthers, what are you having on hand for your midwife team? I want to have some munchies for everyone, but not sure what to have. I thought maybe just some fresh fruit and veggies cut up in the frigde. Maybe a nice homemade trail mix for them and hubby too. I want to make sure everyone, including me, has plenty of fast, healthy fuel around to eat.

What is the best thing for a laboring mama to eat? I mean, besides what she wants.

And is anyone having prayer partners covering their labor? I have one friend, thank you Rachel!, and I want to get two more. I feel that even though I've read up on a lot of stuff, it is still the Lord who will bring this babe into the world. What do you think?

You could make and freeze some quick breads ahead of time, then just pull them out of the freezer on Baby Day. I have an awesome pumpkin bread recipe if you want it. Some cookies would freeze well too. Chips and salsa are always easy and yummy, but I'd advise you to stay away from them while in labor.

I love the idea of having people praying for you while you labor. "Even" with a hospital birth, I like to know close friends are praying for me. That's one perk of posting here when you're in labor too...so don't forget all of us!

ETA...for you to eat...I try to stick to light, easy to digest stuff. Cheddar cheese slices, apple slices dipped in peanut butter, cup o' soup, and also sip Gatorade through the entire labor.

I don't think I ever really bought food for the midwives. They would just eat whatever I had on hand, and sometimes they'd even bring stuff in. That's a wonderful idea, though.

That reminded me of a story, though. When my mom was in the nesting stage with one of my younger siblings, she got the urge to make pies. She stayed up until about 3:00am making pies. I remember her making lemon merengue pies and pumpkin chiffon pies, but there may have been more than that. I think there were at least six pies she made altogether. All her pie-making put her into labor, and all the next day the midwives and my dad and us kids ate pie while she labored. I don't know if she ever ate any of them herself.

With another baby, the midwife was looking for something to eat and made herself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The jelly she used was some homemade cherry preserves my mom had made several years earlier that she had overcooked. The cherries were the consistency of candy. They were impossible to get out of the jar. We had saved them to use as mouse bait for the mouse traps. If you took one of those cherries and put it on the mousetrap, a mouse would sink his teeth into it and be hopelessly stuck. We never told the midwife she'd eaten our mouse bait.

I know a midwife around here who I would've LOVED to see #1 eat the impossibly sticky cherries, and #2 the look on her face WHEN she was told it was mouse bait (this one *deserved* to be told just because of all the interventions she insists are necessary ... she's a wannabe surgical OB!)

I went to my mom's wedding rehearsal dinner while in labor, and the only concession I made was having the veggie lasagne instead of the one with sausage (which was well and good, seeing as I saw that lasagna again later that night! )

I don't remember my midwife eating, lol. Maybe she packed a sack midnight snack? It never even occurred to me! Wow...if I ever have a midwife again, I will make sure she has food available, lol.

I'm so embarrasssed...maybe my husband fed her? I'll have to ask him.

Kathryn - you're reading my mind!! Today I'm planning a "plan the menu and make things that need to get made for labour" day (a bit late, I suppose, but ya know!). I'm about to do some research as to what's good for labouring mamas to eat. I'll post some links in a bit =) I hadn't thought of having some quick snacks and food for the midwives - good idea!!

And I LOVE the idea of prayer partners for labour. I know my community will be praying whenever we let them know (I'll be sending out an email to them all to advise them!), as will my mom and Brad's mom. And of course, as Donna said, the ladies on here!!

From HERE:
* tea
* fruit juice
* lightly cooked eggs
* crisp toast and butter
* plain biscuits
* clear broth
* cooked fruits

From HERE:

"It might help to think about the foods you would eat if you are recovering from a stomach flu. You would not start eating pizza right away! In fact, the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group (a well-known source of evidence-based information and research) recommends the use of a low fat, low residue diet during labor.

Here is a list of some of the top foods that women often enjoy eating during labor:"
* Plenty of fluids - water, diluted juice, electrolyte-balanced beverages
* Toast or ½ bagel with jam
* Cereals - hot or cold
* Eggs
* Pancakes
* Pasta (light sauce or parmesan)
* Tea with sugar or honey
* Sorbet or ice cream
* Jello
* Baked or mashed potato
* Soup - non-creamy
* Mashed banana or mango
* Applesauce
* Yogurt
* ½ Granola or cereal bar

THIS article gives a good description of WHY eating is important during labour - and gives some good examples of foods to eat.

From HERE:
"In early labor it is a good idea to have a nutritious meal so you can keep up your energy levels. Early labor sometimes lasts for several hours so there is no need to deprive yourself. Complex carbohydrates with B vitamins, such as whole grains, beans and starchy vegetables, are especially helpful."

And HERE is a great blog post with current research and evidence about eating/drinking in labour.

Hope that all helps some people! I, personally, am planning to make some trail mix, have some popsicles and freezies on hand, as well as gatorade, I am going to make some yogurt/fruit popsicles, and I plan to have a variety of foods around to munch if I want to. Eggs are great - you can hardboil them in advance. How long does a hard-boiled egg keep in the fridge? Can you freeze them?

Don't eat anything you can't stand to throw up.

That's my only caveat to eating that I've placed on myself.

There are certain foods I will not eat, when ill, simply because I've seen how they come back up.

I think just having lots of healthy veggie/fruits snacks would be good for the midwife and hubby and other child. I remember my one doctor eating applesauce and drinking oj while waiting for me to deliver (she worked like a midwife...she was just a midwife in disguise as a family practitioner...lol....).

As for yourself....don't be surprised if you aren't hungry at all...I start labor and my appetite drops to nothing real fast. That is just me though. Granola, fruit, veggies, cheese would be good...things that keep up your blood sugar but don't cause it to spike and drop (which is the leading cause of nausea in labor...the blood sugar dropping when you get to transistion stage...)...mostly just lots of fluids to keep yourself hydrated (the second leading cause of nausea in childbirth).

and I would add to that one....don't eat NOTHING cause that's even worse sometimes then eating something you wouldn't want to throw up.

I was told by a midwife (haven't tried it myself) that pineapple tastes the same coming up as it does going down. Just in case that helps anyone. lol

lol...so does mint tea...and I think I prefer the idea of mint tea to pineapple....(and I like pineapple!)

The only deliveries where I did NOT get the feeling I needed to vomit were ones where I HAD eaten a little bit while in labor (had to force myself to eat 2 bites of lasagnas and 2 bites of salad with one and to eat 4 bites of vegetable beef soup with the other one!).....

I always get sick during transition...even with the epidural to help with the pain...so I tried to not eat anything once, and it was MUCH worse!!!!!

I do much better when I eat also. I just try to listen to my body and eat slowly when I do eat. And drink Gatorade through the whole thing. (Maybe I should be careful of those carbs though? LOL...)

I doubt Gatorade if taken through out the whole thing is going to cause that much trouble! I can't stand Gatorade when I am not pregnant..and the thought of it when I am pregnant....well...just the thought of it makes me want to hurl!...lol....

ROFLOL!!!!!! Just think of all the weight you could gain from that!!! WOWZERS!!!!!
OK yeah seriously......I am making a list today of things to sneak in take to the hospital with us for snacks. We saw what they have available, and it isn't much. Basically just ice, water, apple juice, and apples. They do have a refrigerator though that hubby could keep some stuff in...for him you know....and then they can still be under the impression that I am not eating anything or drinking anything and only getting ice chips. (I HATE hospitals that put fear into everything)

My midwife recommends Smart Water instead of Gatorade. It tastes like plain water. It has electrolytes like Gatorade, but no sugar. I have 2 bottles of Smart Water and a few different kinds of fruit juice to sip on during labor.

WOF, it was a joke from another thread. I wasn't serious about the carbs. Gatorade is essential to my survival through pregnancy, I've found.

I think midwives are pretty used to fending for themselves. They don't really expect their customers to be thinking of them. They are there for you, and although I'm sure they appreciate it when meals are provided for them, they aren't offended if you forgot they needed to eat too. They'll scrounge up something.

I love having a midwife for the simple reason that if you are delivering at the hospital, they TELL you to bring a cooler full of goodies ... whereas if you were in "normal" L&D with an OB, it is nothing by mouth (other than ice chips) the entire labour plus 2-3 hours afterwards. With midwives, the motto is "The fuller the cooler, the shorter the labour"

I plan on having a lot of stuff around and showing hubby what's up for grabs. If I know I am in labor and am in my right mind, I will probably put a lentil soup in the crock pot, enough for everyone. Hubby loves it, Nadia eats it and if my midwife and her helper are vege's (which I suspect they are) it will work right in there for them. I think it will also be good for me too. I love that soup! And then, when I am done laboring I will be able to eat it too. Maybe for several days!

I am debating on sending that I am in labor through our prayer chain. It would help people to know that I am in labor, to not call, stop by or whatever, but yet to pray. Most of the church knows I am having a homebirth. That's the last thing I need is one of our elders stopping by right as I am pushing. Oh the thought!

I love it! Oh, and vomiting in transition is also know to help your cervix open, so it's not ALL terrible if it happens!

Okay - I just made the YUMMIEST popsicles - super easy recipe: 2 cups fruit : 1 cup yogurt : 1/2 cup sugar. Blend 'er up, stick 'er in the popsicle thingers - done! I added a little less than the 1/2 cup sugar though. Oh, and I use natural yogurt and bought no sugar added frozen fruit.

I read on one site that one of the reasons to avoid OJ and citrus drinks is because they have a tendency to be "vomited nasally".

Kathryn, maybe if you don't want to notify the church when you are in labor, you could send out an email a few weeks before your due date reminding them that you are having a homebirth and in consideration of that, to please not drop by unannounced. You can also make a sign for your front door (and any other doors anyone might us), saying something like, "Laboring Momma...please come back later if you are not part of the necessary crew." LOL
