She struck me as someone who had 'heard' that a lot of things like IV's, midwives, hospitals, etc. are bad. It was like she was parrotting what she'd heard others say without really doing her own research into why others think those things can have adverse effects on a pg or laboring woman sometimes.

I too wished they'd not included her in the film either.

Actually, I think it was more realistic to include her in the film. Not every "freebirthing" mom will be super-educated. Some of them will go into it ignorant and possibly put themselves in danger. Now, if every woman shown on the film was that way, then I'd have a problem with it, but to show one of many being ignorant - that actually made a much more complete picture.

She definitely said that having a midwife at home and "taking charge" of her birth would put her children in danger, or at least that's what I heard, and it really stuck out in my mind. Surely she could've interviewed several midwives and asked them about their philosophies on birthing, talked to their references, etc.

I must have missed that. That does seem silly to me. For sure.

Advice needed for a friend:
My friend is going to be induced at 36 weeks (baby has spina bifida and dr's agreed to try an induction instead of the usual automatic c-section). This is her second- she had her first one naturally, and was actually planning a homebirth this time around before they found out about the SB. She is wanting to go as naturally as possible (ie no epidural), and is pretty crunchy already. Any good advice that I can give her to put in her birth plan? I already mentioned having the pitocin turned off as soon as contractions are established. I don't know for sure but I assume she will be on a monitor for the baby.

Thanks for the advice ladies. I forwarded it along to my friend.
For those who are praying...She will be going in at 9pm tomorrow (Sunday) to start cervidil, then probably pitocin on Monday to get things going. They will most likely do surgery on Tuesday to close the hole in the baby's back and possibly put in a shunt at that time.

I am really planning to go natural this time around. I ended up with a high pitocin drip and epidural when I had Helen and I REALLY don't want that this time. I hated, hated, hated the epidural but the contractions were so hard and fast with the pitocin that I didn't think I could keep doing it without the epidural!

I think I was a little bit railroaded by my doctor last time plus I made decisions that resulted in getting the pit and epi. This time, no matter how impatient I am, I won't let my doctor talk me in to an unnecessary induction. Plus, I have a different doctor who I am much more comfortable with. I think that will help me really spell out my plans.

I am scared of unmedicated childbirth but I believe I can do it and I know it will be better for me.

Good for you, Kristin! Do remember that every labor is different though. Seriously different sometimes.

I must say...I was leaning toward wanting to go natural with Esther and then changed my mind after Brian's accident, knowing how much stress I had on me. And then, somewhat humorously, the spinal (interthecal) didn't work anyway and I ended up probably feeling as much as if I had gone natural anyway. It was NOT the induction that made that labor hard. Before they broke my water, I was handling it well. After they broke my water, I had no more pitocin at all and it was horrid (can I say that here...in the natural childbirth support thread? Oh well, I just did. ). I can't change it now, but even though I had a spinal, I feel like I can say I had that one natural labor I wanted. Wowza. And that anesthesiologist almost didn't live to see another day.

Donna the FOUR or maybe FIVE anesthesiologists almost didn't leave and one didn't want to poke her head into my room the next day to check on me.

When your EPI fails on a PIT drip.. wow.

Next time WILL be different for surely.

labor always intensifies after the water breaks...so what you were feeling was...normal. That is how my labor with my first one started....

Well, before when my water was broken, it was at 6-7 cm and I had a lovely epidural. I could feel a change, but nothing like what I did last time. Again, that anesthesiologist is lucky I let him live another day. And I don't think they should have charged my insurance for relief I didn't get (kidding...).

So do I get to say I finally had an unmedicated birth, even if it wasn't intentional? LOL

unintentional or not...natural birth is natural. Just because it's not intended doesn't make it HURT less right? LOL
Most of mine were unintended natural births...dude. In some ways I think it makes it suck MORE. With my first, the thought of the epi not working had.never.even.crossed.my.mind. Therefore, I was not mentally prepared for the realities of unmedicated labor kwim?

I was hoping my water wouldn't break until I was well into labor, but it broke a few hours before contractions even started.

Mine did with my first too, Emily and it was the worst of the two. And I even had meds with her!

Rhys' birth, even though it was unmedicated, was the best!

They had to break my water. I had wanted a natural birth but ended up in the end not having the choice. Made it much easier not to cave to meds when they said you couldnt have them anyway! Plus I decided by the time I got to the hospital and was complete, that hey, whats just a little bit longer, I made it this far.

My friend had her baby this morning! She was able to have an induced natural birth! The first try at the induction last week didn't take, and her doctors were ok with sending her home to wait it out and try again this morning. The baby has had surgery to close the hole in her back, and I think they're doing the surgery for the shunt tomorrow.

Bumping, because I found a new book that might be of interest to those who keep a booklist.

The Big Book of Birth by Erica Lyon.

It is very *gently* pro natural birth. Not kooky or pushy. Definately something I would give to a first time mom who's wondering about natural birth. It does tend to lead away from drugs/epidurals but also gives at least one personal experience where an epidural helped a woman.

Has some line-drawing illustrations. I thought it was kind of nice that the drawings represent *real* women giving birth. Not super-fit model types. There's even one drawing of an obese woman to demonstrate the squatting position for pushing. That would be me. Fat ladies can squat too.
