All of our cats are speutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and inside-only. We have nine kitty condos (cat trees) spread throughout five rooms in our 4 bdr house, as well as special window ledge seats for kitties in three other rooms. There's a cat door on our bedroom door as well as on the guest room door ... and the wall of our family (up near the ceiling) is lined with carpeted "Katwalks."

I love it!!! That is my dream house. One of our cats name is Punkin. She's a red tabby. We also have Season, a grey tabby.

A friend has just moved into a new place and discovered a mama kitty and four kittens living under the house. Mama is skittish, but my friend has been petting the kittens and playing with them. She told me she fed them the other day, and I said, "Oh, they're yours now!" What's funny about all this is my friend is allergic to cats and really doesn't know much about them, but I've been giving her advice. I told her maybe if she could handle the kittens and tame them, she could find homes for them eventually. She said she was afraid she had been handling the kittens too much and that the mother would kill them or something. I told her mama might move them, but she wouldn't kill them!

I agree with you furrypurrykitty. If their mother was unhappy, she'd probably have moved them by now but she hasn't so I guess she's happy with your friend. And your friend is doing a great job by handling them because it helps to socialise them and get them used to people.

I knew a skitty kitty once and she had babies and for the first weeks after they'd been born she hid them away (and hid herself away). Then she introduced them to the world and oh, she was soooo proud ~ she would practically herd people towards her babies to show them off and would join them when people were paying attention. Talk about a personality transformation!

I haven't ever heard of a mama kitty abandoning her young if touched by humans. I know birds do that. I also believe the bigger cats (i.e. tigers, lions, leopards, etc.) will abandon their young if they smell humans.
I think the mama would only go away if she were sick.
I would continue to keep an eye on them just to make sure that she continues to nurse them and care for them. I agree with aga on the socialization thing. My friend adopted her cat at 7 weeks from the humane society. He and his siblings were abandoned in a box in an alley. They had little to no socialization. He's still very aggressive at the age of 10.

Munchie didn't have any socialisation until she was nearly a year ~ when I brought her home! She's a softie now, just doesn't like to be picked up and held (though she'll curl up on me and next to me). I don't think she understands the word 'aggressive', though I'm not sure the mices will say the same thing!

My friend's cat likes to bite people for no reason. He's not provoked or anything. I have a scar on my shoulder from where he decided to take a bite. I don't have any mice here, but I loved watching my cat chase a moth last night! I was laughing so hard! I decided to do nothing about it because he was so interested in it. He caught it, played with it and finally ate it. I've only had Jacob for a year and he's 8 now. He's a sweet boy. He snuggles occasionally if I'm on the couch. Otherwise he just likes to head butt to show his affection.

My cat continues to be worthless. We thought she might kill the bug crawling across the living room floor last night, but she just sniffed it, stretched and moved on. Typical.

So far we haven't found a bug or mouse worth the effort for her. What is worth the effort is fighting with the neighbor's cat through the window, meowing on our bed non-stop at 6:45 am, and throwing litter around for a half hour every time we clean out the litter box.

My wonderful Nicky (St. Nicholas the the Christmas cat) came to our window on Christmas Eve.

He has taken it as his personal mission to keep the other three cats as clean as the board of health. He lives them a bath ( a good head washing)every day.

He loved to lick my chin as a kitten.

Miss Phoebe is my personal bath attendant. The only problem is she has a tongue that could strip bark off a tree...

Miss Sadie gives some kisses but fortunately her tongue is much softer...

I love cats, but right now I have two bird feeders in the back yard and the neighbors cats keeps "my" birds scared off.
I told one of the cats that all he's doing by hanging around my house is keeping the birds away. The little rascal just looked at me and yawned!

I just jumped right in and skipped the first 23 pages.

We have this kitten that Jay found in the woods and the kids fell in love with. It's been inside since we've found her. I'm not sure how old she is, we found her a couple of months ago. Anyway, she's got these little scabs on her neck and head. I'm not sure what it is. I don't think it can be fleas, since she doesn't go outside. Does anyone know?

I probably am. But I only need one pearl right now, and that's a lot of posts to look through to find it.

Hmm, maybe. It's way down in her fur, and it's really hard to see. Those pictures are hard to tell if it's the same thing. She's not missing hair or anything, though, but if I pick at the scabs some of her hair will come out with it. They feel like little bumps.

It could be anything from some type of mite to allergy. My Phoebe has food allergies and scratches her head and neck leaving scabs all over that area. My first suggestion is to have the vet check her as some skin issues can be contagious to other animals (or even people). If there is no evidence of mites or mange or fleas (a quick check for fleas even if you don't find any is to get a flea comb and brush her - especially around the base of the tail. The comb will trap fleas and flea dirt (little black specks) or other skin conditions, you may want to try an allergy food. Before you panic when they tell you how much the prescription stuff costs, there are a few alternatives that you can get at better pet stores that cost half as much (still more expensive than generic cat foods but it will save you money in the long run and you cat will be much happier and more comfortable). I can give you a few suggestions if you want to try that.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try the comb trick and see if there's any fleas.

What color is Jay? If she's light-colored, look under her chin and on her neck, way down in the fur to see if there's anything that looks like black dirt. That's usually a sign of fleas. Flea bites can cause scabs.

Also, if she's a pretty young cat, you can bathe her. A local pet store (PetCo or PetsMart) will probably have a skin-soothing shampoo for cats. I don't recommend bathing for older cats that you adopt because you don't know if they're going to try to claw your eyes out as soon as they get wet.

Jay's my son. He's kind of a pinkish color, with dark blonde hair. The cat's name is Shadow. She's black, with white hairs beneath that give her almost a shiny, irridescent look to her. She's really pretty. It's hard to see down between the hairs, since her hair is so thick, but it looks like crusty scabs, sort of a browinish gray color. I haven't seen any black dirt of signs of fleas. When I combed her hair, all I got was little flecks that may be dander. She liked it when I combed her, though. She's the funniest thing.

My husband is going to look and see what kind of shampoos they have for cats. I'm thinking it may be from mites, or at least we could start there.

Ahahahahaha...LOL...whoops!

Well, I hope Jay doesn't have fleas either, but if he's a pinkish color you should be able to tell pretty easy.

When you (or whoever) use the flea comb, run it through kitties fur and then wipe the comb on a piece of damp tissue (white). If there are fleas on kitty, the tissue will get orange marks on it.

Do be careful about the stuff you get from pet shops. A lot of it is considerably cheaper than a vet costs, but there's a lot out there that is far less effective. Sometimes paying a little extra saves in the longterm.

He'd be more likely to have fleas anyway, since he's outside more.

Actually, my husband thinks the cat does have fleas. He says he's seen little jumping bugs on the carpet, although I've never seen them. One of the ladies at church told us they've had this place treated for fleas two or three times already. (It's a parsonage.) I don't know how that's possible that we would have fleas again if we don't have any animals that go in and out, and this place was sitting empty for several months before we moved in, but maybe that's it. He bought some flea shampoo and some powder to put on the floor to kill the fleas that you vacuum up. Hopefully that will do the trick. We haven't tried washing her yet. I've never bathed a cat before and I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to try it.
