That was so nice of them :)

I've done similar work with dogs. It was the place the police and housing association took dogs that had been straying. Officially the dogs were kept for a week (that's the time the council paid for their keep) and then could be destroyed. The owners often kept dogs that they thought they could rehome for longer.

It does hurt to see animals put down, especially if they are healthy and friendly. However, it's rewarding in seeing that a dog has been reunited with it's owner or has found a new home. And even in the worst case, I knew that I'd given a dog some love and care at the end of it's life.

I have a question. Do your cats jump up on the tables and counter tops? My kitty is now 4 months old and he can finally jump up there. I'm spraying him with water, but it's not much of a deterrant. He stays up on the table until I get right there, then he jumps off at the last possible second. I'm trying to keep him occupied with toys, but he has hidden most of his favorite toys and I have no idea where they are. I've tried running a stick under all the places they could be, and can't find any of the lost toys. He's driving me nuts.

Nope, Munchie is good and doesn't jump anywhere she shouldn't (though jumping up onto my wardrobe so she can jump off and land on me to wake me up is debatable !)

Kitties are good at hiding toys. My suggestion, buy a bunch and watch to see what direction they play with them in and then look in that area! Munchie always puts hers under my footstool. Oh, and depending on the stick and the toys ~ the stick may not move the toys.

He jumps up onto the table "just because". There's nothing on it... anymore. But I don't want him on the table while I'm eating, so the rule is "no jumping on tables". I think it's a game now.

He was hiding the toys under the couch. That was easy because I could move that. But now I think they might be under the entertainment center or the refrigerator, and they don't move easily.

Funny story: this morning, I opened the blinds on the south-facing door and the sunlight was pouring in. Of course, that illuminates the dust (!!!), and he starts gleefully jumping up to try to catch the dust!!

FurryPurryKitten, I forgot to mention that I'll be praying for your cat to have a safe return home!

grace-n-mercy, I never have been able to break my cat from jumping up on stuff, I think partly because the lady who had him before me let him do anything he wanted. I guess I could've been more consistent in disciplining him, but even if I had, he would've jumped up when I wasn't around. I've read that putting something sticky, like double-faced tape, or something that will fall off and make a noise, on the surface you don't want a cat jumping on is a good deterrent. It sounds kind of inconvenient to me, though - maybe you could do it until you train your cat not to jump up and then discontinue it. Or, if the whole thing sounds like too much trouble, just wipe everything down a lot.

I gave up long ago trying to keep my cats off things... They pretty much rule the roost... The only places I really, really want them to stay off of, I put tape, sticky side up, on. Trust me, the tape gets stuck to their little paws once and they won't go back! The nice thing about this technique too is that you don't have to be there and they don't associate it with you (in other words, even when you are gone, they "learn").

Speaking of cats, Miss Phoebe has decided that I MUST give her attention NOW...

As far as hiding toys:

Check under the sofa and under the fridge...

I guarantee you will find piles of cat toys...

Great idea! I think I'll get some double-sided tape next time I'm out because he does like to jump "to new heights" when I'm not around.

Something that makes a noise won't work with him. He'll ignore it. But what I'm worried about are the few things I have that are irreplacable.

That's what I do. I gave up trying to keep them off the table. One kitty likes to jump on it and swat at the ceiling fan chain. They don't stay on it when I'm in the room because they know I'll yell at them but I know they go up there once I leave. usually when they see me coming they'll scat.

I'll have a hard time letting him stay on the table. Especially while I'm eating. He'll be right in my face if I let him. Oh, and he's already broken one of my favorite dishes by jumping on the counter. Grrrrr.

oh I don't let them on the table! I just gave up trying to keep them off. I've seen them jump way up to the wooden valance above the dining room window! I have a desk there but still, it's gotta be 5 feet from the top of the desk to that valance. (we have 10 foot ceilings)

After I adopted Miss Sadie, this is precisely how she changed me... That little stinky can get into everything. She even knows how to open DRAWERS (not just cabinets, but drawers!). She's not destructive. She just has to get into everything...

My cat is only not allowed on the kitchen counter. If she jumps up on the desk when I am working then I tell her to "get down" and she does. Unfortunately thats probably the only thing I have trained her on.

That's how we were with my parents' cat. We just gave in.

What a feat! You've got to admire their acrobatic qualities. Pun'kin does the same thing with the windows - he has to climb all the way to the top, though my windows aren't as high as yours.

I think that's it. They can't be content just laying around all the time... they have to be into everything. Nothing goes untouched or unexplored.

I love your signature, btw.

Oh, and check out the link in my signature... It's a video of a cat doing a really cool trick. I just found that on YouTube.

LOL! Looks like my bed, only there's just one lump, not two.

Oh, and he loves to help with laundry. I'll pile the clothes on top of him, and he's as happy as can be. One day, he was exploring the closet and I needed to close the door. So I pulled him out and plopped him in the laundry hamper... a moment or two later, I heard a very loud purrrrrr coming from the hamper. He was happy.

Sadie is pretty! I've never had a black cat.

And LOL to the bed, when I change the sheets Lucy thinks it's time to play. I have to shut the door, she'll actually bite me if I try to move her while putting on the fitted sheet.

My two Maine Coons spent every daylight minute under the comforter on our bed when we moved to our new house.

Were they traumatized by the move and felt secure under the covers or were they just cold?

FPK, I hope Tut is home safe and sound very soon. We too had a cat that was gone for several weeks, at least.

We have two cats, Peaka and Squeaka. Peaka is black, well she looks black because the tips of her fur are black. Underneath she is white.

Squeaka is an orange kitty. That's him in the Christmas tree in my avatar.

They are indoor kitties, except when they escape. Squeaka I nicknamed Flash for a while because of how quickly he could fly across the room when a door opened. And Peaka can open the back screen door. We had a latch, but it broke and we haven't found a suitable replacement.

The cats used to sleep in the basement, until they learned how to crawl through the space above the drop ceiling in the one finished room in our basement. I finally was tired of trying to sleep with cats by my feet and legs, so hubby fixed the hole he thought they were coming in through. Didn't help. So he fixed some more holes. Still didn't help. I do think we know where they are coming in now. Oh, we have ceiling tiles missing because of a leak in the bathroom above. We could replace them, but then we'd still have cats walking around up there.

This reminds me... this afternoon while I was posting away here, Mr. Pun'kin somehow opened the back door. I must not have latched it properly. He's an indoor kitty, but likes to sneak out once in a while. Well, I found him laying on the kitchen floor in front of the door soaking up a little sunshine and watching the goings on outside. When I saw the open door, I thought for sure he would be outside. When I closed the door, he started fussing at me!

When I had a pair of kittens, they both seem to have this stream of energy and run from one end of the apartment to the other, all at 3AM!
