Right, I have no problem with people who really need water. I question the varacity of the need.

...

Put aside your wants for a little time. Its no big deal. It just seems...reasonable.

This comes across as talking out of both sides of your mouth. Who are you to decide who has a need and who doesn't? At what point does water become a need? Is it only a need if it is going to prevent death? How much pain does someone have to be in before it's a need? What if someone just needs the water to sing their best for the LORD? Or does that only apply to someone who is in the choir? Should someone in the congregation have to hold back their singing voice just to prove to you that they can put aside their "want" to sing their best in worship, since they won't die if they fail to enjoy singing to the LORD? I think it would be more disrespectful to the LORD to sing poorly because you wanted to have the false piety of going without water, than to swallow your pride and sip some water so that you can sing your best in praise of Him.

I took a cup of coffee to a prayer meeting last night. Didn't feel bad about it at all.

I don't. I believe I said before, that my challenge was to the individual. For each to weigh the importance of doing this. Not to set up some church policy.

Its about an individual's sence of worship and respect for the Lord and what personal commitment is. I don't know if there is a medical need or not and as I have stated over and over and over again, I have no problem if there is a medical need....

I just doiubt the majority of people in church with a drink are doing it for a medical need. I guess I could be worng but it has been my experience that people, saved or not, worship their wants more than respecting God.

I don't know how to state that any more clearly. Its up to you if bringing water into service is that important to you. I am challenging you to think outside of your box.

I guess that is too much to ask.

I understand what you're saying. I don't agree with you, but I think your point and approach are both legitimate.

What I question is why having a beverage during church is disrespectful? If the act of drinking is so distracting to the one consuming the drink, then I could see your point. If consuming the drink made so much noise as to distract those around you, then I could see your point. If others find your drinking distracting solely because they think it's improper, then I think you might want to reconsider your actions because of the way they're interpreted, but I'd really suggest that those other folks should rethink being so uptight and legalistic.

In and of itself, I don't see why bringing a beverage into church is disrespectful.

I'm a dentist, and I understand medication-induced xerostomia (dry-mouth). To those of you who don't understand - please don't be so quick to have an opinion about whether or not water is a necessity.

speaking of fasting ...
if you had diabetes - would you go on an insulin fast? i think not. same thing here. xerostomia - water is an absolute necessity.

but, please take my advice and don't drink sodas. they are very acidic and as a result demineralize tooth structure, causing cavities. sodas are around pH3 (look them up if you'd like ... the lower the number, the worse something is for your teeth) ... pH3 is WAY too acidic! (teeth demineralize around pH5.5) ... that means that every time you eat or drink something more acidic than pH5.5, your teeth are losing minerals. you can replenish some of those minerals through toothpaste, but ... i'm guessing you spend more time drinking sodas than taking care of your teeth.

those of you with dry-mouth ... you're soaking your teeth in acid and don't make enough saliva to even wash out those acids over time!!! ... don't make it harder on your mouth ... stay away from sugars and acidic drinks. use fluoridated toothpaste (fluoride remineralizes tooth structure, arresting tooth decay)

some find sugarless gum (trident, orbit, eclipse, etc), sugarless candies, Orajel, Biotene, etc to be helpful for xerostomia. please consult with your own dentist about the use of these ... cuz i don't know your particular needs ... but please please please stay away from sodas.

oh, and for the church issue - please don't be too quick to judge your neighbor. you haven't walked a mile in his/her shoes. this goes for every issue. Jesus said to watch out for the plank in our own eye before attempting to take out a speck in another's. "I desire mercy, not sacrifice" "Love one another" in whatever you and i do, let's not forget to love each other ... because that's how the world will know that we're His disciples. no?

To me its like...I can't put aside my carnality for just a few minutes a week? This is God we are talking about, not just some meeting or club. Church, to me, is a very serious thing. The gathering of the saints. The place where we get recharged. To learn about...not math or vocation but our Lord, God Almighty.

Its not about pewmates. Its not about distracting others. Its about setting aside a time for worship. Making that, important. To praise God. To put Him first, in all things....just for a few minutes.

Its what a fast is...putting aside the carnal for the spiritual. The wants of the body, just for a few minutes a week while we worship. ( Notice I said wants, not needs )

I am sure God doesn't mind you having a drink in service if you will have serious side effects from not drinking. Ya know? I think He does mind if you can't set aside having a drink for a few minutes while worshipping Him.

In other words, let the dead bury the dead...the time is now for worship...total worship.

I don't mean to be arguementative. I am not the water police. Its just an opinion.

I've been to one of those "no being yourself in church" churches.

I didn't stay long.

Woe upon me!!! I love them!!(sodas, I mean) But suppose if I don't drink them in church its OK?!!! I see nothing in the world wrong with taking water to church, I've done it multiple times! Of course if you were gulping in a loud way like was mentioned before thats another thing but I certainly don't get why people would have a problem with a simple thing like taking a drink of water in church if its needed.

Ok. Water is ok...where do we draw the line?

Youa re in service for an hour...that is a long time to go without food...how about a snack?

The sermon gets a little slow..how about bringing a laptop to pass the time?

Your hands dry out...how about hand cream?

Kids get a little unsettled? How about some toys and coloring books?

You sit for an hour...how about those vibrating seat covers that massage your back?

Before you know it people will be carrying coolers and knapsacks filled with all the things they need to get through that awful hour without our comforts. I mean..one hour a week focused on God alone is...too much, right?

I don't think so.

Its not a real big deal...not at all. Seems to me I remember when Jesus fed the 5000 He was concerned about the people because they...had...not...eaten...all day. Sounds like to me He had their attention.

Should we do less?

soninme, you're in church for only an hour? that would be much easier than my sunday morning schedule or church service.

now, let's list all of the bible references that decribe the rules for conduct in gathering of the saints.

My old church I was there for about three hours.....my new church I think ist a little more than an hour and a half.

My pastor can't go over because he has other services to preach in that day, 2 on Saturday and four on Sunday. He says constantly that he preaches fast but we listen slow.

I am just glad all you water drinkers don't come with me on long road trips....those bathroom breaks every 2 hours would kill my schedule.

If we exercise a little common sense, it shouldn't be such a big deal where to draw the line!!

AHA!!! Soninme, I knew you were a man, not by your signature but because you had to, just had to bring up the bathroom breaks on roadtrips issue. Now you are in big big trouble.

We could start a post on why men hate to stop for bathroom breaks. But I don't think there is enough room on these forums to hold the posts
Okay before you say it, it could be why women have to stop all the time too.
Didn't mean to change the subjuct.

Hey, I grew up in a church with wooden pews...I guess they thought that padding was "carnal" when the church was designed.

I've never heard water described as carnal before.

I get frequent urinary tract infections (praise God, I Haven't had one in about 6 months)...I'll bet there are some people who would be prone to judge me as being self-focused and carnal if I took a bathroom break.

I don't buy the whole "slippery slope" / "if you give a mouse a cookie" argument. If you really did, you'd be arguing against pews or other seating in church as well. After all, for more than a thousand years, churches didn't have them, and everyone just sat on the floor. Pews came, but we haven't moved on to recliners for everyone. If I'm not mistaken, Pews came in during the 12th or 13th century. In nearly 700 years, I'm not aware of any churches that put in extravagant seating that distracts from worship.

Shall we draw the line at any sort of comfort?
  • Services must be at least 3 hours long. No breaks. No arriving late. No leaving early.
  • Everyone must sit with legs crossed and backs straight, eyes forward. Cushions are only approved for those with medical need, like a broken tailbone. A cushion is not a need for a sore back, you can put up with pain during the service and for a few days afterwards, put your carnality aside.
  • No air conditioning or heating, no matter the climate. Men must wear three piece suits, and women must wear appropriate dresses. This goes regardless of the weather as well. If the weather is over 100 degrees and humid, you can't take off your suit jacket. (No drinking water, either, unless you can prove you've stopped sweating and have heat stroke.) If the weather is -30, you can't put on on extra coat or blanket. Frostbite should only be treated if it's effecting a vital organ. It's more important to focus on God, and comforts like warm air and toes are only distractions from worship.

I think that suggesting we go to such extremes to ensure discomfort are just as absurd as suggestions that we'll inevitably slide into doing anything and everything to be comfortable.

Although, if we got rid of the pews.... we could spread out some blankets and have a picnic! Mmmm, tuna salad on wheat! Whatever will I do if I don't have enough for everyone?
