LOL!

Loudandproud, I am sorry for your experiences with the engagement. But I am sure something of it will be beneficial for you and your hubby in the future. He's praying that all of our marriages be fruitful.

Hey guys! Sorry I've been totally absent - I was taking wwaaaay too many credits at school but now I have finally GRADUATED!! It feels very good.

I think I'd rather just say that my wedding is in July and not give the date, if that's okay.

For those of you who are feeling overwhelmed and disappointed by the whole engagement thing, like Loud'n'proud, I highly suggest the book "Emotionally Engaged" by Allison Moir-Smith. It's not a Christian book and there are some mild references to couples living together or sleeping together, but nothing explicit and it's not the focus of the book. She talks about the challenges of planning and trying to make everybody happy with your wedding at the same time that you are going through the biggest change EVER. I found it very helpful. She said something like 85% of brides say that their engagement was one of the worst times in their life! And that struggling through the adjustments is normal - if it doesn't happen while you're engaged it will happen when you are married and possibly even a mother so you won't really have the time to process it as much. Anyway, here I am blabbing about it, but I think it would be very worth it for anyone who is feeling disillusioned by engagement.

The big debate right now is about kids at the reception. My parents are paying for everything. My mom and his mom are both in charge of homeschool support groups. We both love kids, but let's face it: we're having dinner at the reception and everyone we know has at least 3 kids... some have more, like 8. His family is really upset about this. I'm not saying I like excluding the children. There are kids we aren't inviting who are very, very special to me. I just don't see a way around this because we have to keep a limited guest list and I don't think it's fair to invite some kids but not others, unless it is family. It's such a mess and my fiance forgot that I was sending out the invitations right now so he is upset about it again... gahhhh. I keep saying "well, I don't love that it's working out this way either but in the end my parents are paying for it and get to make the final decision," but for some reason they think I can just talk to my parents and change their mind. I have tried to talk to everyone and I'm trying to keep everyone as happy as possible. I really don't think anyone with 6 or 7 kids is going to be offended that sometimes people cannot accomodate their entire family!

But... my invitations are SO COOL. SO SO COOL! They are black pocket folds from mygatsby.com... I am working on them right now and I'm so happy with how they look. I love paper!

I'm working on flowers after the invitations are done. I think I'm going to go multi-color to reflect the stained glass in the sanctuary. I'm going to get my bouquet from a florist and do the rest of the flowers ourselves.

Could we talk about what things we are DIY'ing? I'm DIYing my bm dresses, invitations and most of the flowers. I'm also getting friends to play and sing instead of paying professionals for music. I was a music major in college so I have lots of very skilled friends :)

If we had more time, I would have liked to do more DIY projects for our wedding. As it is now, we're getting married on June 28th and leaving for Japan two weeks later (we'll be teaching there for two years), after only being engaged for 3 1/2 months! Craziness. We're just a tad overwhelmed with things right now. Things are happening sooo very fast!

We have had a lot of help with wedding things though, so a good bit of it has been DIY... we bought the invitations from a card store and filled them out ourselves - a friend and I had a neat handwriting party, haha. The same friend created nice inserts with a map and other details. Another friend of mine is doing all of the flowers for the wedding party - which I believe I all done now. We bought them at Hobby Lobby. We're doing origami decor in the church and reception hall, which is very easy to make yourself - double sided wrapping paper is great for larger origami flowers! We're also doing a dessert reception where guests will be bringing their favorites in to share with everyone and a copy of the recipe to share with us. Someone is also making my veil to match my dress. His family is decorating and putting together all the favors themselves. For entertainment, we're doing a board game theme at the reception and will be enjoying lots of fun and laughter! We had a friend arranged to do photography, but now he can't make the wedding so we'll have to find another person - hopefully, another talented friend or family member! We bought all of our dresses a David's Bridal for lack of time, otherwise I would have like to have had them created for us (we had offers). So yeah, things are coming along despite the inner chaos of so much happening all at once. We just found out last night they would like us to start training at the school July 14th... so it's a good thing we moved the wedding up to June!

Ok...now for the all important discussion regarding cake toppers.....

Ray is going to be wearing his army uniform. Did anyone have a cake topper that was specially made? Was it crazy expensive? Is it worth it?

What did you all do with your cake toppers after the wedding?

Miliatary Cake Topper I was looking online they all seem to be 30-40 dollar range which seems good for speciality ones.

Ive seen alot people put them in clear boxes...along with flowers from the wedding... it was kinda neat... haven't looked to much into it.

My cake topper is sitting up on a shelf. Unfortunately some of the snowflakes broke off it though.

My cake had roses on top instead of a typical topper. It went well with the roses in the rest of the centerpieces, and it looked really pretty.

I LOVED my cake topper. It was simple and classic.

Here is my topper
Here is our cake

Right now mine is just in a box in storage. But when I get a nice (bigger) China Cabinet, it will go in there.

Hey everyone! I'm back, and I am a wife!! And wow, it looks like I missed a lot -
I don't have pictures yet, but everything went as close to perfectly as we could have hoped for! We had an outdoor ceremony at a park with the reception right afterwards in the park's little picnic building(this park, actually) on Friday the 9th, and the weather was beautiful! Everything was very simple and low-key, just the way we wanted it: my dad and brother went to the rental place to pick up the chairs and sound system in the morning while my mom and I set up the reception area with a couple of other helpers, then we all got ready and had pictures before the ceremony. Those went right up until the ceremony itself, which was absolutely beautiful. A friend of mine played piano as I walked down the aisle with my dad, and another friend did our scripture reading, the pastor's message was wonderful - everything was great.
Our honeymoon was so much fun! We spent the rest of the weekend at home, then drove down to Virginia on Monday and stayed in in the Blue Ridge mountains in this really cute little cabin, which we had all to ourselves. We did a couple of hikes and scenic drives and just relaxed. I have to say that being married is awesome. It's sooo nice not to have to plan anymore! Hang in there, everything is worth it in the end!

As for the DIY stuff - we had a ton. I already mentioned the music, my aunt did our flowers and centerpieces, and she made cupcakes which we had instead of a real cake. We had some friends running an iPod instead of a real DJ at the reception, which was really fun. A friend of ours happens to be a professional wedding photographer on the side of her normal job, so she did our photos for a really good deal.

Phew.. this is getting long. Anyway, it's really good to be back and I'm looking forward to reading about the rest of you ladies' engagement journeys. We don't have internet access at home, so my posting here will be a bit sporadic - but I'll try and get some pictures up as soon as I can.

Almost 4 weeks to go! Wow... is it really that soon? Even more wow... 5 weeks until we leave the country?!! Oh my. There's sooo much to do!! BUT then we'll be able to settle in and relax, at least somewhat, until we adjust to life overseas... Is this really happening? It hardly seems real sometimes.
