from Erin in the preg. thread.....

Re-arranging project is a no-go...rooms are too small and our furniture too big. Back to plan A...buy more shelving/storage cabinets, which are expensive...I think I'll take this over to "Our homes chat".

Erin...it isn't that expensive to do L bracket shelves. Then you can buy a piece of plywood and cut it to whatever size you need it to be....put up the pretty inexpensive L brackets, and have your shelves. You can paint of stain them whatever color you want them to be. A little more work then the pre-made shelves, but definitely cheaper!!!

Thanks Sarah, I was going to come over here and ask my questions but I was too lazy to even type it. I'm just feeling really overwhelmed with where to put everything.

What type of room are you doing, Erin? And what are you organizing/storing?

ohhhh - or I saw this cool thing you can do!
Buy fake leather fabric and use it to cover plywood - staple it down on the bottom side. It looked really good wherever it was I saw it done!

I can't find the staple gun, so our chairs aren't done yet.
Last night we figured out how we want our place to look - that was nice.
I now have a list of things to hunt for on Craigslist and yard sales:
-a desk
-a computer chair
-a formal couch
-two formal arm chairs

I already got one desk and one computer chair off of Craigslist, but we each want a desk for the office, so now I need to find another one

Someone from church has offered us their couch for $150 - I forget the brand (I think she's charging for the brand) but they've had it since they got married, and I think they were married 25+ years ago. She said we'd probably want to recover it... it seems like a lot of money for a second hand couch If it's 'brand name' do you think it's worth it?

that's why I suggested starting with a graph paper drawing.....believe me, I know....we have moved enough that I know what overwhelmed is with regard to furniture and rooms, etc. It really does work though. It lets you play around with the furniture, which rooms to put things into, etc.
*hint* when I do my drawings, I use the small graph paper and make one block equal to 6 inches....that makes it pretty easy to estimate sizes and get it pretty spot on...plus then all my rooms are the same size essentially so I can interchange the furniture into every room. My hubby doesn't like moving something then finding out it doesn't fit very well...so I try my best to do it on paper first to make sure it will work.

In a couch, the main thing you are paying for is the frame and the quality of fabric. If the frame is great and in good condition, it could be worth $150. Since you will want to recover it (I wouldn't live on someone elses fabric they had been using for 25 years, but I'm a bit OC about such things,) the quality of the fabric won't be a concern. Paying $150 plus recovering it sounds like a good deal to me for a quality item.

Honestly, I just don't think it is. In my opinion. You can go a lot of places and get a brand new couch for around $275-300 (like Big Lots) and there is a lifetime warranty on the frame (I know ours has one, and it came from a discount store). Paying $150 for a 25+ yr. old, plus recovering (that can be a headache) . . . . almost worth it just to go spend the same amount of money on a new one with a warranty.

I found the staple gun! But it hurts my stomach too much to try to staple But I rigged it so the fabric sits decently on the frame and you can see before and after pictures HERE (I feel so cheap! The 'after' pictures aren't really done yet )

If we purchased that couch I was thinking of just covering the couch with one of those couch covers you can buy at a store. How much would it cost to get someone to recover it for me though? I think that would look a lot better.

Someone is paying me $200 to watch her two dogs for 5 days, so I am going to use that money on something for the house I am excited.

Oh wow! What a perfect fabric choice for your chairs, Jessica! Great job!

About the couch, its hard to say without knowing more about the couch. If it is quality and just what you want in size and style, maybe. However, look into what you will have to pay to have it recovered, that is not cheap. Definately look at new couches...furniture stores are suffering in this economy and are offering some nice savings just to drum up business.

I love those chairs and the fabric you chose!!

The cost of re-upholstery would vary depending on the fabric you chose, the amount of fabric needed, the quality of the workman you chose, and the style of the couch. I'd call some upholsterers in your area and ask if they could give you an estimate.

I agree with Jen- look at new couches. You can find some that aren't as expensive as you might think.

sometimes it's more cost effective to recover it yourself...hard to say whether you can without seeing the couch first though. It's not that difficult on some types of couches. Things that will add more to the upholstery is how many pieces will need to be fitted (curved pieces have more work then just straight lined pieces)...whether you want (or it needs) a more structured look for the cushions or whether it's just straight seam to seam. The type of material is of course a big one...and the cost of that material too. You may want to know some about the frame itself though first....what kind of construction, what kind of wood, what kind of joints...does it have springs or webbing...what kind of padding inside the cushions. All that will tell you if it's even worth it.

btw...HERE is an interesting article on the flame retardant stuff put on couches these days

We have an outlet type store around here, about an hour away, that we are making a trip to this weekend to look for cheap shelving/storage units. They usually have things that may be slightly damaged or discontinued items. Hopefully we'll find some good stuff!

I have loved looking at all the pictures of everyone's home as well as reading the post. I have finally got a photobucket account so I should be able to post some pictures of our house soon. I did post pictures of Hunter's nursery this morning in the nursery thread. This is a fun thread!

OK, ladies, I have some updated house pictures. The painting is done! We move in on 2/27.

Here is the kitchen before.

Here is the kitchen with the first shade of OOPS wayyyy too bright day-glo red.

Here is the kitchen after, with the corrected color. I love it! The painters were so nice and redid it for only the cost of the paint. I was thankful for that. They also painted the hall closet without me even asking, and I later asked them to add the hall bath to their original bid but they did it for free! I loved our painters.

Here is another view, showing the breakfast area. Also note the new and improved backsplash, with the green paint removed and the pink tiles painted red.

Here is the fireplace mantel with the molding I bought at Lowe's and asked the painters to install.

Here is the finished mantel.

Here is the master bedroom before

Here is the master bedroom after

Here is the master bath before; you can see a glimpse of the torn wallpaper inside

Here is the master bath after being textured and painted

Here is another of the master bath

Here is the office before (was previously a child's bedroom)

Here is the office after, with the purple wall my husband asked to have in honor of his beloved alma mater, TCU. I agreed that he should do it, without any argument at all, and now I have been getting tons of "wife points" from both him and his jealous buddies. He got the official NCAA team color paint, even.

Here is one of the other bedrooms after, showing both the new carpet and the new paint.

Thanks!! The toile/black curtains are pretty, but I had to take them down because they don't match our bedding. However, the hall bath will have a toile theme because it came with this interesting cornice thing and all black hardware. I have the toile shower curtain but haven't put it up yet. Bath pic

Bethany, what a beautiful home you have...I bet you are excited to move in!

I am excited because for once I made a decision regarding home decor and didn't second guess myself. I was at Target today and found canvas jungle art for $12.99. There were four different prints in the series and I bought all four. The guest bathroom is done in this THEME to match Hunter's room, plus its unisex in case we ever have a girl. Though the art work doesn't match exactly it matches close enough and looks very cute in there. I will try to take pictures when I can and post them.

Thanks, everyone! This is my first foray into decorating with color. My house growing up had all white walls and so did my apartments, so it was an interesting experiment. I love how everything turned out in the end.

Our new bedroom furniture was delivered today, and one of the bed posts was broken! We are going to have to go look at the floor model tomorrow to see if we want that one instead, or just keep the current bed (they are repairing the post).

And somewhere in there, I have to pack!!!
