We call that the 'distressed' look.

Ah yes, "distressed" is probably better then "weathered", lol.

I think I'd be distressed too if someone was hitting me with those kinds of things.

Here is my friends description of what she did:

"Don't do what I did. It is a pain and it takes to long. I had to sand, paint, dry, paint another coat, then do other side, twice, dry, rub a stain on them, dry, and then polyurethane 3-4 coats with a day drying and sanding between them. You do not want to do that."

Hers look really cool though!!

Jen, they are very pretty, but my cupboards are very plain, they don't have all those grooves in them like the ones in the pictures had. I don't think I'd like it in our kitchen.

Have you thought of taping off a rectangle in each cabinet door and doing something interesting inside the rectangle? You could do your gloss/flat stripe thing trimmed with a thin stripe of gold, black, or chocolate. You could just do a solid rectangle, slightly darker or ligher. You could place a pattern in there with paint or wallpaper. You could just do a "medalion" in the center of each cabinet. You could also get some wooden appliques to add interest to your cabinetry before you painted.

You can also use molding to do a border around the edges of the cabinets, it would give them more dimension.

OR if you like the antiqued look you could rub them with furniture wax, it kinda of gives a slightly brown patina.

Yeah, I was just trying to find examples of light cabinetry with the wall colors being discussed.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't get too crazy with the cabinets, mine require scrubbing way more than I ever dreamed they would and if you don't have a sturdy finish, they won't last long. I couldn't tell from the pics, do you have much of a backsplash on either wall? That is an area that could create interest. The possibilities are endless: tiles, tin, faux painting , wallpaper, photos or art mounted behind plexi and attached to the wall, you could have some fun with that and take your time and still be able to have a working kitchen.

I agree, lose the border. Have you thought about just adding the molding along where you said and instead of doing the stripe effect, just paint the top part white like the molding and it will give the illusion of a nice big crown mold and not be as choppy for the eye.

Speaking of painting....I keep thinking about doing something interesting with paint for "frame" our obnoxiously big tv on the wall.

Anyone seen or done something cool?

This is very true. If you do any of the things that I suggested earlier, I would recommend that you make sure to use high quality products and clear protective coats. Cabinets take a beating with just adults in my home. I imagine it has to be at least 2x as bad with children.

I would love some opinions on my kitchen. Warning: This is about the ugliest kitchen you will EVER see. I've done nothing with it since we bought this house, but it is next on our list.

PIC 1

PIC 2

FYI, the kitchen, dining room and living room are all basically one room.
We want to paint the cabinets, replace the carpet with tile, replace the countertops, paint, do something with the awful backsplash, and ideally add more storage space but I'm unsure how to do that.
I just have no idea of what colors to go with! lol. I'm not good at that kind of thing. Any suggestions??

(and ignore all the house pictures in the rest of that album, they're all really out of date. My house is way different now.)

lol...only when they get to be big enough to reach them....with peanut butter hands....lol

Amber....not ugly, just a "blank canvas"!!!!! Very cute bones to start with though!!!!
since it's open, what kind of colors do you have (or do you want to have) in the open part of the house? What kin of "style" do you prefer (country, modern, contemporary, etc)
One way to pick your favorite colors, go to your closet and see what you dress mostly in....that's one way to draw from a color pallet that you already like.

Amber, I LOVE your kitchen. You just need some new window treatments and countertops and would be set to go. Your counter tops are not ugly, They just don't match the rest of the kitchen.

If it were me...

I would get some red plaid curtains, put in red counter tops. I would take out the back splash and make the counter wider and put some 8 inch deep shelves where it looks like a half wall, and then put some bar stools up to it so people can sit there. that way you can entertain while you are in the kitchen. It is also nice because it would make it easier to stuff at the counter with children.

BTW: Is that your baby in your avatar??

Well my hubby doo was off work today and apparently decided to rearrange our bedroom. He decided it didnt have a good spot for a crib....
Here was our bedroom before....close it it anyway. We have a bigger bed now and a few more cabinets.
Left
Right

I'll be back with after pics of that AND the living room.

Amber, I dont think your kitchen is too bad. Maybe new countertops, and play up the red!

Amber, Your kitchen isn't ugy! It's just very country. It has loads of potential. The only thing that struck me as odd is that your eating area and your kitchen look like pictures of two different homes. They have very different feels. So here's my first thought until you answer Sarah's questions and I can see that this won't work for you :

Play off the warm terracottas and cool charcoals in the brick in your eating area. I'd do that for the things it's a nightmare to change or that are expensive to replace, like countertops, backsplash, and cabinets. I'd concentrate on getting things with texture... like wood-look formica countertops that look rich like the paneling in your dining area or a charcoal granite with terracotta flecks (the name of that granite isn't coming to me )... like a interesting backsplash (even if it's solid) such as copper tiles, rosy travertine in a brick look... like the cabinets being a warm off-white.

I'd add in one two accent colors that went with the rest of your decor as a paint color and accessories colors. I could see colors like mustard, sage green, slate blue, cranberry, etc as the accents.

See, your kitchen has loads of potential.

ANother way to pick your favorite colors is to find a fabric or painting that you can't live without and base the kitchen off that. You may already have that item in your home.

Amber, you asked about extra storage... could you put a piece of furniture under your window where your garbage and step stool are?

That half wall has cabinets on the other side that go the depth of it, so I couldn't add anything or put stools up to it, though I'd love too!

Yep, that's my Levi.

Sarah.....hmmmm....I wear a LOT of red. I could see going with red accents, I don't want red walls or cabinets though.
As far as my "style", I don't like country per se, but I like softer colors, and "contemporary" isn't really my style at all.

HisCovenant--you are right, my kitchen does not match the dining room or any of the rest of my house at all. The living room and dining room have that stone you commented on, and hardwood floors.
I can "see" some of your ideas--I like some of those! You have definitely given me food for thought. I like the idea of sage green, I think.
And my husband had thought of adding another set of cabinets under that big window, but I wasn't sure how that would look.

(I have to wonder what they were thinking when they did my kitchen. Carpet??? And nothing matches...not the curtains, or countertops, or anything. lol)

Some people just don't care about things matching... or have enough money to feel like they have the luxury of matching things. Dh grandmother bought two yarn-covered chairs for her living room in the 80's: one was brown and orange.. the other was limey green and yellow. It hurts me to just imagine them in the same room, but she liked them both and didn't care that they didn't match.

My grandparents had carpet in their kitchen, too. I think it was a fad for a while... long before I cared about such things.

I know, You just misunderstood me.

I would take off the backsplash and make the counter wider so that it hangs over the half wall. I would tuck the shelves in under the counter (I did that at one place that we lived in and loved it) and then put stools there for people to sit at on the side that your dining room is on.

i would probably store cook books there as well as other kitcheny items that I like but don't really use much. It wouldn't be highly visible but would look nice, or you could build cabinet doors to keep things out of sight but add just a little extra space.

Here is one with a back splash but no shelves.

Here is an extra wide counter top.

Ok guys, I hope I'm not intruding, but I need a little input.

I've posted pictures of my house in another thread before, but I've bought some new rugs like THIS ... I really like them, but they have more brown and terracotta than my previous rugs. Those were just temporary but they did have a little purple in the pattern and so they blended with the BACK WALL in my LR. (Trust me, that wall is a lot darker than it photographs and is not at all "Barnyish"). One of the new rugs is very large and I've placed it in front of the love seat. The rest are long runners and 3'5"X 5'3" for the hall, kitchen and bedrooms so a lot more floor is covered than than I previously had. Anyway I'm thinking of painting that wall either Terracotta Pot in the color choices HERE or Tapestry in the color choices HERE (Khaki is the other existing wall color in the LR and Sage Green is the color of the kitchen which are all really one big great room).

What do you think?

Kat, where's the intusion?

I like the Terracotta pot colour but I would always lean more toward that type of colouring.

BTW, I love that rug.

Kat your room is gorgeous! I love it! I wish I had some good ideas, but they come when they come and don't when they don't. I wish that I had more control over that switch.

I hope that people on here won't think i am ignoring anyone if I give opinions on some things an not on others. You all have such lovely homes, I don't want anyone to feel bad.

My .02? I like the 1st one too. The whole kitchen has good ideas for you, not just the counter...you could leave your cabinets the warm honey that they are and put your $$ into counter & backsplash...do you like the tile they used in the pic for the counters?

Hey Kat! Love your home! I would choose the terracotta color.

Erin, are ya'll trying to fit a full size crib into your bedroom or a bassinet?
