It's fake cactus, so no one can hurt themselves on it!!

I do have more fabric - I was thinking of doing it black. Maybe get a cool knob for the bench drawer... do I need to sand it down real well, and then use ... what kind of paint??
Maybe I could distress it too.

I think I know what to do in the kitchen - just not certain on the colors yet. Somewhere in the brown family - probably tan.
I am going to use wax to cover parts of the cupboard doors - around the edges. Then paint the doors, and then lightly sand over the paint so that the parts with wax come off and the white will show through - giving it a distressed look.

I am pretty sure I'll do tan on the wall, and then either a blue or another similar brown color.

yes you need to sand it off. Do you know what kind of paint was used on it before? If it was oil based then either sand ALL of it off or redo it with oil based. If it was water based, then sand to a grit wipe down and paint with primer and then paint (primer esp if it's darker going lighter)

I'd sand it all off and paint it with a durable paint- as high gloss as you can stand- or stain it and clear coat it. The reason I would sand is to make sure and get off all wax and polish and oil based products that are usually used in a stained piece. Sanding it well eliminates all mistakes you can make with paint... but it's also the mosr laborious. One option that Sarah didn't mention is that you can TSP it, then prime it with a stain blocking oil based primer (not just any primer because the stain will telegraph through the paint over time) and then paint water based or oil based paint over that.

Really, you can use whatever paint you want, but it changes the prep of the piece. Just remember you have to to clean all wax and polish off (if it has a wax finish or has been Pledged ) no matter what else you do... The other thing to remember is that you can always use oil based paint on any previous finishing stain and urethane (water or oil based,) but water based paint should only be used over primer or previous water based paint/stain. Water based products will not stick to previous oil based finishes.

I don't know enough about your style to comment on what colors you should paint it or what type of fabric you should use. Just refinishing the bench and making a cushion that fits with clean fabric will make it look awesome, no matter what color and style of fabric you chose. I also like the idea of changing the drawer pull. I can see ceramic, metal, and glass/crystal knobs working well, depending on the fabric and paint you chose. That was a great find.

What are you going to do with the ceramic pots and column? Are you thinking indoors or outdoors?

Have another question for you all. I went to Wal-Mart yesterday LOOKING for curtains...not looking to buy though, since hubby doesn't get paid until Thursday, rent is due, so I won't be able to buy as much as I need. Anyway, I looked for a couple of door curtains. We have two full view doors...meaning that they have a full panel of glass so that you can see outside well...the only problem is that whomever is outside can see whatever is going on inside too...which only causes a problem in rare occasions, but it would be nice to have a curtain on those doors. The ones that I have seen attach at the top and the bottom...actually, there are places here where the last people had curtains up and you can see that they were attached at the top and the bottom. I couldn't find any at Wal-Mart. Where can I get them?

Here are door panels. You can probably order the rods off this site, too. I ordered some of our bedding from this company, so I recommend both their products and their service.

I am thinking outdoors. I haven't a clue what to do with column. I've never had one before.

I am leaning towards painting the pots and planting flowers inside them. My husband loves them plain and with the cactus... So I don't know. I may run to Walmart this afternoon and see what I can find.
Can I spray paint ceramic?

Those pots look terracotta to me. Here's an article about painting them them... you have to be careful painting them because they breathe and absorb moisture.

If you are going to paint the column, I would prime it first and then you could spray paint it. You will probably want to do a glazing technique to bring out the architecture.

Jess, I find Home Depot to have a bit better of a spray paint selection. I would prime the bench with something like Kilz, it will stick to pretty much everything and then you can spray paint it, which I think would probably be the easiest way. I have been pleased with the Rustoleum brand from Home Depot, but American Traditions from Lowe's is pretty good as well.

If you are going to spray paint, I would highly recommend buying one of the spray paint triggers so that your finger doesn't get tired.

Yesterday and today have been project days

I made THIS garden yesterday. Still needs some work, but that's generally how it'll look.

I bought spearmint and have planted that today - it's in a pot, can I mix another herb with spearmint?

I am working on re-doing the bench today. I'm actually starting with the drawer - I want to see how it looks and if I love it. It'll take more time this way (I have to wait till the drawer is done till I start on the whole bench) but at least this way if I don't like it I only have to start over with the drawer!!

I have so many things I'm just dying to get hung up... Just waiting for Paul to have a few hours to help me out with it.

That garden is cute. If your grass dies, you can always replace it with faux grass.

What did you decide to do with the bench? Paint it black and use your dining room fabric?

I am priming it, painting it white, waxing the corners, painting the entire thing black, then sanding the edges so the white will show through... so a distressed look. Like what I'm thinking of doing to our kitchen cabinets.
I bought a crystal knob for the drawer.
As far as fabric I think I will have several different covers made - my aunt is coming in a few weeks with a sewing machine and wants sewing projects!! I want different covers so that I can do different looks with it

That sounds great- especially the idea of using different covers throughout the year. Good idea.

How is the bench coming along, Jessica?

I can't wait to see your kitchen, Sarah!

I finished the drawer earlier this week and we love how it looks, the rest of the bench is primed and ready to be painted, but I've either been super busy or it's been rainy and cold, so it hasn't gotten done!!
I'll probably get at least the white paint on this afternoon, and then tomorrow wax and paint it black - then it should be done!!

We just bought a travel trailer, and it is straight out of the 70's

Here is what the cushions look like (ugh...so ugly!)

And here is a picture of the curtains.

What should we do in here? We're already planning to remove the curtains and valences and put up mini blinds, and we're going to recover the cushions, but not sure what with yet. We're also going to put laminate flooring down (click floor) and probably rewallpaper the bathroom...it is very yellow.
The walls and cabinet doors are very dark wood veneer, any ideas how to lighten them up too?

I can't wait to go camping!!

Oh yeah, the cushions smell pretty bad, the last owners had a dog and they smoke, I don't think they smoked in the trailer, but there is a faint smell of it. I can remove the cushion covers and wash them, but can the foam be washed in the washing machine? I have a front loader, so no agitator, and it has a hand wash cycle... not sure if I should try it or not.

Yolanda, my mom swears by some spray-on stuff...I think it's called Smoke Away? She used to sell used furniture and she'd use that stuff to get rid of the smell. I'm pretty sure she found it at Wal-Mart. Anyway, you could look for that to spray the foam cushions.

I was thinking the other day...

When I had my old car, my dad borrowed it one time and spilled some lobster juice in the back seat (and then forgot to tell me about it )
Anyway, I tried everything to get the smell out, and eventually took the bench seat out of the back, sprayed it with Spray9 and took it to the car wash and sprayed it off with the pressure washer, then let it dry. That worked...
So I thought I might try something like that...spray it with spray9 and then spray it off with the hose, or in the bathtub/shower or something, then let it dry on the deck.

just know that getting old foam wet like that might make it fall apart, even if it is in the cushion.

I took the foam out of the cushion cover and it looks like it's in really great shape. Not sure what I'm going to do yet. Might just have to leave them outdoors to air out if we can't afford to do much else with them.

We're thinking of wood paneling on the walls or wallpaper, but I HATE wallpapering, maybe my MIL wants to do it, hubby says she likes it.

Yolanda, I would spray them off out back with the hose and use an enzyme cleaner like Pet-Zyme or something on them to really get rid of the odor.

just have to throw my caution in there...don't do it unless you are willing to toss them b/c foam that old has a tendency to fall apart when wet!!! they might not, but you won't know til you do it!!

I'm willing to try it with just one to see what happens. I've been pricing foam around here, and it's not looking like we can afford to replace them all this year :(

price foam mattress toppers too....sometimes it comes out to cheaper and you can cut it to size and use spray glue to put layers together
