You don't have to worry about the underneath color being put on perfectly - so long as it is covering the areas you plan on rubbing through!

Status: offline 		As for the fireplace, I think painting your walls a warm shade, maybe mocha or another shade of brown would offset the starkness of the contrast between your fireplace and white walls.


I love your fireplace by the way.

Status: offline 		I like your fireplace, too. I agree with all the advice not to paint the brick. Can you post pictures of the entire room so we could help you figure out what may be overwhelming the room or what may be making it feel smaller?

Status: offline 		Sure can...although you will have to use your imagination to remove all the Christmas chaos from them.

This wall has the TV in the far right corner and the entryway on the left - you can sorta see the front door. (you can see the cords before we figured out how to hide them)

This one is looking from that wall towards the fireplace.

This is the wall where the TV is on the left and the doorway on the right goes into the kitchen.

The wall oppsite the sofa (I have no picture yet) has the recliner near it with a side table and rocking chair - I have to be careful cause I can't block that entryway cause it's not all that wide.

???does that help???

btw, this is really cool that you guys are so creative!

perfect...the door by the rocking chair is twice as wide - nearly to the other wall...but yep that's about it

Status: offline 		OK....here are my thoughts on the layout......
*I definitely agree with Ryanne that a tv cabinet that would hide the tv more would balance out the size of the fireplace more (but in general I don't like tv's to be seen all the time...that's just me)
*You are limited with where you couch can go....either on the wall it is on now, or on the wall at the bottom of my diagram. It would be too big any other place. Do you have a smaller sofa...love seat size maybe...that would take up less space but still give you seating? The big one is kind of big for that room.
*the recliner chair is very heavy looking...which I think is why you think the fireplace looks so heavy and dark in that room (or overwhelming for the size of that room). What kind of rocking chair do you have? Is it lighter in the way it looks then the recliner? If so then maybe switching the two would make it a lighter and more airy feeling space there at the fireplace.
*is there any furniture that you feel is excessive and not really utilized in that room? if so then removing it might help too...that's a lot in a little room.

Status: offline 		Okay, Doink, I'm jumping in here w/ my .02...

Would dh like a new flatscreen tv? If you did that, you could mount it onto the brick and open up lots more floor space. His beloved recliner could go where the tv is now and the couch could come over to the opposite wall. The rocker could round everything out either on the wall by the recliner between the kitchen door or over by the window, which over works best.

Status: offline 		well, his beloved recliner is not long for this world . I am getting more adament about getting rid of it.

I actually don't like the coffee table...I've never liked them - I would rather have a long narrow ottoman that can double as extra seating - one of those that is sturdy enough to place a tray on to hold a drink glass.

The TV sits up high on a corner wall unit that a friend made for us so the TV didn't have to take up the whole wall. So that might be staying for awhile anyway. The dream unit I like is part of Pier One Imports Richelle Collection - it has long legs and doors to hide the TV.

What I'd really love to have are two big chairs (ottoman optional) with a table in between, a love seat with the ottoman. And...of course, the TV . heaven forbid we lose that thing , although I would like to have it behind closed doors.

The rocking chair could go in our bedroom, which is huge. It's a mission style chair, very wide and very simple - my dad refinished it years ago as a gift.

It's funny cause the rest of the house is really open - my dining room is larger than the living room. Maybe cause there is only one window in the LR makes it seem small, too.

You guys are awesome with the suggestions, etc. it really has me thinking!

Peculiar lady...love both layouts...I might try one of them out tomorrow while husband is at work. He loves it when I change stuff around on him.

Status: offline 		btw, we do small groups at our house, which is why we're kinda conscoius about having seating in there...however, we do have folding chairs that we can use that we store in the closet that is behind the rocking chair in the living room.

We finally got a decent mirror up in our ensuite.

And it matches the shelves we built ages ago (please excuse the clutter).

The old mirror measures about 20cm squared. The new one is 98cm x 60cm, making it 0.588m square.

what clutter? Looks perfectly normal to me. Anything less is a hotel room

I like the mirror. I have a big old "hotel" like mirror in the vanity area of my bedroom bathroom and I would love to replace it with one that has a frame or maybe two smaller ones. There's only sink, so I could use just one small mirror and then have something on either side. I dunno...I'm still on the living room .
