Are you going to use the baby bed bumper? If not then I wouldn't suggest getting the whole bedding set. (If you don't know about if you will use it or not, ask in the pregnancy thread about the bumpers..>Donna has some info on those and why not to use them)

Exactly. Like I said, it's a huge chunk of money for what....a theme for the room? Basically. Because the quilt won't be used for a good while, the bumpers won't be in....yup, that's pretty much it. I can buy sheets and colored blankets for decoration, put up a valance, etc.

Good...you guys are talking me into this.

LOL...in my experience with our four it really isn't that necessary to "decorate" that much....they don't care if it's painted or whatever....it's just up to your own personal tastes...right. Some of our kids were lucky to have their own room...much less get it decorated and all matchy...lol

That's probably why I'm not overly concerned about this. I'm from a family of 7 kids. I ALWAYS shared a room. I have no intention of letting my kids have their own room, unless we only have 2 kids! The "theme" in my room growing up was navy blue carpeting and white walls.

LOL. We finally have slight "themes" to our rooms...after nearly ten years of marriage. The girls room is of course princess bedding (cause their whole world revolves around princess everything!!!). However, it could easily change with new bedding choices. Their room really doesn't have a theme. Jake's bedding is camo....he has always liked camo. Jack's is...well...happens to be blue and green and yellow...bright colors. It just worked out that way though. We had an extra shower curtain from a previous bathroom and needed something over his window, so that's what went up. The buckets I got that same year were all blue and green colors...and that's what the toys are divided into. And the yellow is the changing table and bedding stuff (cause it's neutral). So it just kind of worked out that it looks decorated.
Now MY room is purposely decorates...and I like it!!!

Here's a sample of Green and brown together. Not as cheery green as you would use, but will give you an idea.

Sarah, I know what you mean! I think that's why I enjoy having our house so much. I finally can decorate without having to share space (because hubby doesn't really care) or worry my sister will change it when she's mad at me!

Zippy- thanks for the link! Since yesterday I've been thinking (I worked all night...I've had time!)...I wonder if I should do green and brown stripes instead? Hmmm, I don't know. Just wondering if all that brown/tan would be too drab. Guess it depends how much green I put in. I also found THIS sample yesterday, which is similar to the colors in your link. I probably would do a little cheerier though. I need to get some paint samples. I'll probably end up sketching something out too, just so I can visualize it better.

if you want to not have to paint in a few years when either it is outgrown or you are over it...then I would go more neutral on the walls and keep the stripes and dots and patterns to the other things in the room. Or maybe you could do bold stripes on the walls (like she linked to) and use the other type of patterns (dots, checks, etc) in fabrics choices that are easy to replace. If you decide that then you need to start looking for the fabric choices available to you, not the paint colors...cause those can easily be matched and fabric sometimes can't. (btw...I love the green and brown idea!!!!)

I LOVE this set.

This one is cute too.

This isn't really my style, but it's cute.

We have the Target version of this set. I will take pictures once our dresser gets here and I straighten up a bit. We hung the quilt on the wall and I think it looks great.

ETA: This is the set we have. I picked it out before we knew if we were having a boy or a girl. I think it is gender neutral.

I agree. #1 mistake I saw homeowners make was picking paint color first and then trying to decorate a room around it. If you pick paint first, it really limits you with what fabrics, borders, wall papers, rugs you can put with it.

How do you pick a color first? I can never do that, I always need a good bit of inspiration from bedding, a pillow, even just a swatch of fabric to build a room around.

I'm the same, but I can't tell you how many customers I've had bringing in a paint color they had just painted their room and now want a border to go on it. Many time they specify some sort of pattern or theme they want in stock. It made me want to holler, "Are you nuts!!?!! There's probably only two borders in all the sample books that will go with that paint color? You'll have to just take whatever theme we find that works with it. And odds are very low it will be in stock!" But I never did say that because that's called Bad Customer Service!!

I agree. That would be frustrating to be stuck on your paint color.

Emily thanks for the links. I like your set! I did see that brown & green star one in-store, and it looked better than online. But still didn't look good enough for me to buy it.

I think I will probably check back with where we're registered for bedding accessories....sheets, baskets, etc., and see if I can find brown & green colors in those things that I like. Then I can work around that.

At this point, I think I am going to do bold stripes on the walls, up to a chair rail. Then a single color on top. Originally I was thinking of the stripes being mocha and a tan color. Now I'm thinking of making the stripes mocha and the green color. But then I don't know if I would want all that green on top? Depends on the green I guess. I don't want the mocha on top, that would be way too dark. I'll have to get paint samples and see what I think of doing mocha and green stripes, with a tan on top. Hmmm...not sure.

I was thinking more of a brighter green, but I found this blanket

HERE

which I could at least get color coordinated accessories....baskets, sheets, etc. to go with.

Maybe I should work with this...

I could do something totally random, but I would like to be able to put stuff on my registry. If I do my own thing, I'm on my own for getting everything too. If that makes sense.

I'm confused... why couldn't you register the sheets and blanket, but you could a set? Unless you'd be getting stuff from a bunch of different stores?

You could do the green and mocha stripes on the lower part of the wall and then choose a lighter mocha (or green) color for the top part. Just stay in the same color family where the difference is the ratio of white to the other toner colors. You don't want a tan with loads of yellow on the top mixed with a mocha with loads of yellow oxide. The overall tones won't go. If the brand of paint has color strips with graduated colors all in the same color family, just stay on the strip and you will be fine.

Purejoy- I have a bunch of these bins, but in blue and I love them!!

I also have the closet organizer, 4 pocket organizer, and 2 of these crates. I REALLY like the bins. The organizers are also nice, but I don't like the crates as much because they are flimsy.

ETA: These sheets match that blanket. So pretty!!

Zippy- Sorry, I wasn't very clear. At all. I am going to register for sheets and blankets. I looked last night and found quite a few things, and cute picture frames etc. My thinking was it's easier to register for a set....but I want to register for all my random stuff...BEFORE my shower invites would be going out...which is soon. So basically I need to get my act together, so I get my random stuff on the registry in time. If that makes any more sense.
Thanks for the advice on the stripes, too. That's kind of what I've been thinking now...green and mocha on the bottom, and then a lighter one on top. I'll have to get some paint strips and see what I can do. Thanks for the info on the tones...I'll have to take that with me when I go.

Emily- I love your enthusiasm! Thanks for taking the time to look through all that stuff....that's so sweet of you! Actually last night, I registered for two of those canvas bins in sage, and two in tan. And those sheets. Man, great minds think alike.

Hi ladies, I am so glad you started this thread. My daughter and her husband just got a house. They have been living with us for 15 months. The children are 6,5, and 4 weeks. We need help with the tubs and showers. They have those decals on them to prevent a person from sliping. They are old and ugly. How do you get them off. The wall paper is coming off well. There is wood floors under the carpet. The woodwork is in great shape. The last owners put they things in the tub and I don't know how to get them off. Any help will be greatly appriciated.

Thanks for the info on the tones...I'll have to take that with me when I go.

You are welcome! A paint mixer should understand all that mumbo jumbo about the color of toner and a talented sales person can do it by eye without knowing what's in the paint.

Welcome, girl! I don't know about the decals, but what else are you thinking of doing? Are you planning to paint or rewallpaper? Are you doing it up for your daughter's family?

We (I) am planning to paint the rooms. (that's my mom btw *wave* Hi mom!) I started Sat taking the wallpaper off. I wasn't sure how it was going to work; I didn't know if it was going to be really hard taking it off. However I used DIF in a spray bottle and it came off wonderfully. I got a good piece done in just 2 hours. However in the hall way the wallpaper is painted so I am hoping that the DIF will be able to penetrate into the wallpaper.

what is "DIF"?
I have used a solution of warm water and fabric softener before (and one of those things that puts holes in the paper) and it worked good for paper that had been painted over. It just took a bit longer because it came off in two layers instead of one. That could have been because the paper was old and very thick though.

DIF is a brand of wallpaper remover. The gel formula in the spray bottle is wonderful because it stays put.

Your momma? Cool!

We always used hot water+vinegar to remove old wallpaper. Last year I helped my MIL remove some border from her walls and then she had the audacity to ask me to help her hang more No thanks.
