the trend here now is to do that too, and also small blocks so you can basically stick your hand out the window and touch your next door neighbours house. i dont like open plan living either. I like there to be separate areas where mum/dad's can go and kids can go, esp when they are older and have friends over and you have your friends over.

thanks kim [:)]

Oh! We've got a small back yard but at least we're not on a Zero Lot Line. Some friends of ours bout a house with one of those...that basically means that their neighbors house is on their property...their back yard you can actually touch their next door neighbors outside wall! Yikes!!

And your house is very nice...I like your 'no cabinet doors' in your kitchen...it looks very sweet! And handy! [:)]

Don't feel bad, Nicole. I'll post some pics of our little apartment[;)]

fluffmonkey -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:32:26 PM)

Wow Kim your house is huge lol Everyone has such lovely pics of their homes. I cant wait to decorate my own home. We are thinking about a house but it needs repairs...and its an old house too...I would like to have mine built...maybe one day?

lexie -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:34:16 PM)

How many people bought their house brand new, and how many got it already lived in?

We were planning on buying brand new until we saw a friends house in the next town over. They got a great size and backyard for a great price. Because my BIL has his own renovation business, and Dh has helped him on many occasions, we think now we'll buy used and do a whole lot of reno's ourselves.

It is big...but we justify that with the number of kids we want. [;)] Our house isn't a new build, though we looked at those too. But I didn't want to pay a homeowners association! Hmph! So that means that we had to repair our air conditioners this summer. That was a MAJOR expense! Ick!

laughinggirl -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:42:18 PM)

Thanks, Nicole! I am very excited about having a decent kitchen and leaving behind my cramped apartment. It will be great to have some nice counter space. We are very thankful to have found this house - it is truly a blessing.

Jessica, thanks for the idea for the bathroom art!! I have never decorated with black/white before, so it helps to have new ideas. I already have some red wooden letters that spell "Faith", "Family" and "Friends" that I might put on the shelves in there. I would be glad to send you those orange curtains if you think you could use them!! I like the style, but I'm not really into orange.

****not all the houses in Texas are so huge...****

I have family in Texas and their homes are not huge... And some people have larger yards/gardens. It really depends on where a person lives. Texas itself is a huge state.

LOL..you're right! It does depend. I was just speaking for the DFW area. [;)][:D]

HisCovenant -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:46:08 PM)

I'm thinking about redoing accessories in my kitchen, but am not sure what kind of theme I wanted to head for. It's blue, about the color of crosswalk.com's headers and footers with white cabinets, a taupe formica countertop and a taupey ceramic floor. I have one picture that is about 2x3 feet that I would like to keep, if possible. It's a floral garden scene looking out from a columned porch with citrus fruit topiaries. These two pictures were taken with my cell phone, so are not very good quality, but will give you the flavor. [;)]

I currently have a garden theme with concrete birds & animals, greenery, and a few flowers. I did the fruit thing before, so I am not interested in making the fruit the main theme.

Any ideas?

clag4christ -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:47:46 PM)

I LOVE that color blue! And that picture is awesome! I wish I had some plants in my kitchen...but our cats would eat them! [8|]

paulsbride -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:47:56 PM)

It's tempting Bethany - especially for Judah's pirate room!! But I wouldn't be able to use all of it, and I'd have to cut them down to size...
so they're probably better going to someone who can use all of them - I'm sure they would delight someone and fit perfectly in their home!

HisCovenant -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:51:08 PM)

I've enjoyed the blue, too, and don't want to change it! But I am growing tired of my accessories... they just aren't working, except for that picture and fern.

paulsbride -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:52:44 PM)

that blue is really nice!!
If you're wanting to keep those two pictures in the kitchen, and yet not do fruit or garden maybe you could do a basket 'theme'?
I love the live plant you have in there!!
Without seeing your whole kitchen it's hard to know what you could really do - but the frame of the picture looks like a basket weave, so it could all tie in - and you could keep some of the garden things you currently have.
Without those prints I would add browns and creams and do a take on a coffee shop type theme.

HisCovenant -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 5:58:45 PM)

Those are both great ideas. I'd just have to be careful to not make it too country (with the baskets) or too modern (with the coffee.) But I really like both those ideas. That frame is resin in a woven pattern.

The thing about getting rid of that picture is that I don't want to spend money on replacing it because I am still enjoying it. It's the animals and greenery on the counters and cabinets that aren't working.

our house was built in the 1950's

for those that haven't seen our house, here are some pics of some of the rooms......I don't have pics of all of them (we are doing specific pics when they are pretty much done...or clean....lol)

Jack's room...the colors were not planned, we just happaned to have that lime green and blue theme going on from our last place....it was the bathroom there though...lol. The "curtains" on the window and closet are shower curtains.

Girls room...basic stuff is in there, but we are redoing a little of it soon. When I get a new or fixed sewing machine then I can make their curtains.....paint will be pink...I am thinking a dark pink, black and white accents. The material for the curtains is white...someone gave me tons of yardage of it and I have no other use for it (it kinda looks like it was a runner for a wedding or something like that....HUGE long...two rolls of it!!!)

PIC 3

Our room...we have it mostly done....just have to do some paint, reorganize some things, etc.

Front yard...

Back Yard....it pretty much is just the pool right now...we need to do some stuff back there. There's a side yard that has ezuipment in it...and an area about 20ft sq that is grassy in the back too. The pool pretty much takes up most of it though.
PIC 1

(edited cause one pic had a naked baby in it.....oops...sorry....blurred it out)

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 7:30:46 PM)

sarah are those agapanthas in the front yard? I love those, we have them throughout our front yard. We did have them out the back around the pond until our dog came along [:@]

We bought our house old, it was built in the 40's or 50's. I love it because it has real dark timber frames around the doors and it has picture rails in the main rooms and nice cornice work and ceiling work in our room and the lounge. Hubby likes it because it has a huge yard, a big shed out the back for him to work on his cars and bikes and a shed out the front too.

I am not sure...I don't know the names of hardly any plants or trees. I have the blackest thumb ever...lol. Are you talking about the trees or the bushes?

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 8:05:23 PM)

the bushes, hmm do they have either purple or white flowers on them like this

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 8:19:28 PM)

nope....they have pri*ckly things on the ends of the leaves. We hate them cause they hurt every time we walk by...so we are pulling them out soon

paulsbride -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 8:30:03 PM)

Paul took pictures!!
You can see our new house HERE

I am so open for ANY ideas you may have!
But especially for the guest bathroom - mirror and maybe new lights!
A new color for the kitchen.
And anything for the dining room!

But like I said, I'm open to all ideas![:)]

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 8:44:01 PM)

Jess-I would get rid of the lights in that bathroom, a lovely big mirror with a real big gold frame would like nice there.

Could you paint the brick wall instead of trying to get the soot off?
your backyard looks nice and big and ready to do anything you wanted. LOL your cubby looks like ours that hubby built for Grace from scrap wood and now its all rotten and he didn't take the nails out of the wood so grace can't actually go inside, just stand on the porch [:D]

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 9:12:24 PM)

Jess, are you renting or did you buy?

paulsbride -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 9:37:23 PM)

We are renting the house, with the hopes of buying it one day.
It's this really old man that owns it, and 50 other local properties that he rents out.
He plans on retiring sometime in the near future, and he'll give first dibs to the owners. He told me he'll sell them cheap.
He has been in real estate for 40 years and is the best in this area, and for 3 years in a row was the best Realtor in the nation.

Ours was built in 1982 and already lived in. It was also one of the model homes for this neighborhood. We got quite a bit more house for the $$ that way, AND the guy left us all of the furniture and appliances.
I'm convinced the previous owner of our house had OCD or something- the house was spotless when we moved in and was in almost perfect condition (except that he used the fireplace for a trashcan).

clag4christ -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/30/2008 9:47:26 PM)

Sarah and Jessica your houses are lovely!! [:D]
