me too....or the glass cannisters with the silver/steel lids.

we have the cheap ikea version, but i'm sure there are more expensive ones, or solid ones would look better...especially if you don't like the food items to show.

I LOVE IKEA...that's one thing I miss about Germany...we were only about an hours drive from the one in Mannheim. I need to figure out where the closest one is to us now.

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 3:15:09 PM)

coke in the washing machine? won't it make it sticky?

I have only been in Ikea once, I hated that you had to walk around for ten years to get out of the store!! but they did have wonderful affordable things in it. That's why hubby wants to do one of their kitchens.

nope...it won't. Even if you don't use soap with it, it will still come out cleaner...because there is generally enough soap built up in the fabric to still clean it and get it sudsy.

1.) Should my canisters by my coffeemaker be changed out? They are from my old kitchen and they don't really do anything for this kitchen, they aren't horrible, but it would be an easy switch for something really falublous, any ideas? Here is a close up of the canisters (I really love my silly palm tree soap dispenser) and my rooster on the other side that I love...see what I mean about country french meets florida kitch?

I see what you mean! You could call it Italian Meditereanean Chic and that would sum it up better, IMO. [8D] It is beautiful, though, whatever it is! Those cannisters are loud compared to the earthy palette you have in the rest of the room. I would either replace them with something more earthy in color- terracotta, green, creams, etc.

Italian Mediteranian....interesting...so far away from French Country meets Florida!! I know the style of architecture is more Mediteranian, but I am truly stumped by the Italian!! [:D]

So the consensus is to ditch the canisters, yeay, I have a mission. I will probably stear away from glass/stainless. They would be pretty, but I already have too many fingerprint covered stainless and I only keep sugar and slenda in the jars, not too interesting to look at. Although, I love the way yours look, Elastic!

You could just do simple panels at the sides of your windows to soften them. You could use something sheer and gauzey if room darkening is not an issue or something lined and heavier if you need real privacy or room darkening.

I like the idea of panels. Its the details that bog me down like, what style rods?, what style panels?, should I use a valance?, what style/pattern fabric? Want to take a crack at it?

I think I will do some surfing and post some options....

my personal opinion is this....if you want an open and airy look then do not do valences...it seems to box things in more. I would do a pretty rod (I like black rods with pretty finial's on the ends) and some simple tab top or sheer looking panels for each side. Just enough to soften it, but not to close it up. Instead of a full across the window rod you could also do one that is a swing arm rod....they are fancy and pretty, but meant to just be on the sides so that the curtains don't close.

Gauzey Curtain Panels - terracotta color w/ antique brown artichoke finial rods

Silk Panels in celedon or chestnut

Valance in celedon or chestnut w/o valance

Subtile print Panels

Rod and Key Finials for panels

You are GOOD! I like the look of these.
And in my surfing, I figured out the Italian tie in...Tuscan...*hits forhead*, DUH![:D]

I was looking at canisters and these were pretty, then I saw the price [sm=icon_smile_yikes.gif]CANISTERS
I mean, really, I don't care how much $$ one has, $100 for a silly canister?! I almost did a spit-take all over my laptop!

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 5:45:49 PM)

HERE is the same basic look for much cheaper...it's only $99 for the set of three

clag4christ -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 5:46:00 PM)

Jen! I LOVE your cabinets and countertops! I need some hardware for our cabinets...Joel's halfway through adding knobs (bin pulls) to our drawers. [8D] I want to do French country in our kitchen and something like it only for the bathroom when we re-do our masterbath. We have to wait until our AC debt is paid off before we can start on that. We've got a leak in our master shower so we've not been using it since this summer! Ick! But we've got the mirrors we're gonna use (if I can convince Joel to put them in there [;)]) that we got at Super Target on like 75% sale two years ago! The only problem is that our bathroom's got one of those standard stock mirrors but it's very very long so that means that it's very very heavy...too heavy for just Joel to take out. So we might have to hire someone or have someone from church come and help us take it out.

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 5:49:03 PM)

Here are som echeaper alternatives.....

You are looking at Horchow. You might as well have looked at Saks or Neiman Marcus. [8D] At least we all know you have wonderful taste. Horchow has beautiful stuff, and some of their clearance stuff can be affordable... but you really have to love items you order from them! What's a split-take?

Target Canisters

ETA: If you order anything from target check the shipping price first and then compare at amazon.com. I can't tell you how much we have saved by ordering Target merchandise thru Amazon because of shipping.

peculiar_lady2 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 5:52:18 PM)

HERE too....very pretty set of four...same style, for $50

I thought you were a fellow frenchie when I saw your toile curtains [:)]
I love the bin style drawer pulls, I would have put them in my old kitchen if we hadn't moved. And I am finally realizing that our new home isn't really all that much french country, especially since I recovered my dining chairs, but we will always have the pretty scalloped, antique white dining set and my rooster even if we have relocated to a more "tuscan" decor. [;)]

I look forward to your decorating updates, your home is beautiful. It is so smart of you all to be patient and only do what you can as you can. Not just for biblical financial reasons, but you have so much more appreciation for what you work for, kwim?

Sarah, you have nailed my taste and found it in many price points, thanks! I am hoping, though, to stumble upon an super-marked down set for about $20. [:D]

His Covenant, I meant to type spit-take, you know, when you are so surprised that you spit your drink right out?

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 7:02:15 PM)

i have no idea what my style is in my home, I think its a "this-was-cheap-and-on-special-also-filled-with-hand-me-downs". We have never had the money to be picky about what we bought we have a few good pieces of furniture which I guess are country style, but i am not into the chicken/dried flower/teddy bear kind of thing. I love flowers (fresh preferbly) and bright and happy things, but I also love the classic look too.

Nicole_Michelle -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 7:10:11 PM)

You ladies are making me sad cuz I want to buy a home and start decorating again. [:D] I love all the pictures!

Hopefully in 4 months or less we will have a home!

I would have asked about that, too... I just call that spewing. I've never heard a special phrase for the surprise spew! [sm=smilecrossbone.gif]

Nicole, have you seen the new modern country? This site will give you some idea what I mean, although most of the time I see these lines in more rustic pieces. I'm not into country (as defined by the knicknacky, dusty chicken/dried flowers type,) but I do like this country style.

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 8:05:45 PM)

hiscovenant-thanks for the link, i have no idea if we have places like that in australia where you can log on and look at things!!! And our target website is dumb too, it only shows things in the latest catalogue...
Some of the things were nice, there was a few things too country looking, but it was good. Ugh, i still have no idea what I like!!
Does it matter if your house is a mixture of things? do you look at homes like that and think "gosh what was this woman on when she was decorating?"

I struggled with being patient and envious before we bought a home and were able to get a few pieces. We still have a lot of hand-me-downs, but having a comfortable home (that includes being pleasing to the eye so you can feel restful in it) is my priority. We still have our old bedroom suits we grew up with (dh in master; mine in guest) and laminate tables in the living room from dh parent's first furniture. I have found taht we can dress up the bedroom suites with bedding and cover the tables with accessories that take your eye away from the fact that they aren't the latest style (or even two or three back [;)].) We try to be good stewards and still have a nice home.

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 8:11:10 PM)

ok i take that back, we have ikea that I can look at online...

HisCovenant -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 8:11:47 PM)

My opinion in decorating is all about balance and very little about a certain style. I tend to notice when your eye jumps from place to place and doesn't continue around a room. Or when you make a room look dwarfed by drawing a vertical line... or having a piece of furniture that feels overbearing or that isn't balanced... KWIM?

No, that is called "eclectic", a mixture of what you love (or can afford) all thrown in together. It can be extremely striking, all you need is a cohesive element like color and you've got it! I've seen your home, Nicole, and you have great style even if you can't slap a label on it [;)]

Mrs.Wifey -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 8:33:31 PM)

My style is... sort of a Tuscan country feel, meets my own flair, lol.

I need help in our bedroom, it's just SO dull. We have a bed, no dressers, etc... THIS is our bedding, in the red color and I think I'm going to do some sort of brown accent. But I also saw THIS set at Walmart today and I am IN LOVE, lol. DH would want some sort of red accents, but I think they could look nice with the black and white.

I was going to take pictures of our living room, dining room, and kitchen but our camera is at my IL's, so that will have to wait until tomorrow.

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 9:49:30 PM)

looking around before in my lounge, there really isn't much in it except photo frames, a painting on the wall that I love, the couch and coffee table and entertainment unit. I also have a tin vase thing with fake lillies in it like I had in my wedding. I don't really have a whole lot of things so maybe thats why it is so hard to pin point my taste or style.

nicole6598 -> RE: Our Homes (revived chat about decorating) (1/31/2008 9:50:38 PM)

Ryanne I love that new set you found!
