To paraphrase the cinematic classic Tommy Boy, I have what the doctors call a bit of a Christmas problem. Got about 4 or 5 CD's of Christmas music loaded on my iPod. Got my Christmas movies out ready to watch anytime I need a pick-me-up. I am a member of several Christmas forums. Got several Christmas movies sprinkled throughout my Blockbuster queue. Some people locally actually call me Mr. Christmas. So to me spring is just another milepost on the candy cane road that leads to Christmastown.[sm=smile-l.gif]

Not that I minded. The only thing that really cheesed me was they took down my Christmas tree that had been up since October.

I do hope you all survived Tax Day yesterday. We'll be writing a tithe check from our refund this Sunday. (not a brag. I just don't want to forget to bring my check book)

I tithe on my gross so any refund has already been tithed - and any extra I have to pay in (like this year) doesn't result in a negative tithe.

hmm, good point. The money that the government keeps from our paychecks, even though we made it, they are responsible on how it is spent. (IMHO) We are responsible for what we get back. So we tithe the refund. I do wish we had a fair tax system, though.

I look at what the government takes out as just another bill - only taken out before I get my check. I also have 401K and savings taken out. All of that is part of the total the Lord has given me, so I tithe on the gross.

I used to tithe on my take-home pay until I realized it's all based on the gross after certain government "bills" are deducted.

Wow! I didn't know this was that prevalent. I actually asked a co-worker about it, and he went so far as to say he doesn't celebrate Christmas because of the pagan conotations and he calls it 'Joy and Giving Day'. So I didn't know if this idea was serious or sarcastic til I talked to him. It kinda blows my mind. I guess since the idea of Christmas trees is so ingrained in the celebration of Christmas, i never really thought about it.

Does this mean that I have to get rid of the trees in my yard so folks don't think I'm one of them there pagans?

I read a lot of this thread and most of the last Christmas thread and I think you are the only one I have heard say that. It is true that is what is being talked about but people sure like to act like it is talking about Christmas Trees.

I didn't kill my tree. I put it into my yard roots and all, planted it in the front yard and decorated it outside this year. Nice tree. Friendly tree.

It sounds like to me not idols being carved, The Bible mentions those, it says decorating tree with gold and silver.

Christmas used to be banned in US. I wonder why we went back? Also at the Catholic Site, it list the paganism it is based on.

I'd rather not do it. It is a heathen way, I'm a Christian, Christ celebrated the Festival of Lights, Hannukkah.

Even if you ignore the next verse that more than clarifies, "the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe," indicates more than just chopping down a tree, but shaping it for further work. Consider also that people did not have gold or silver colored trinkets back then to place on a tree, they used REAL gold and silver, not something one did except on graven images.

I'm a Christian too and have been for over 40 years, but I celebrate the incarnation and the resurrection of God the Son. The Festival of Lights have no significance to Gentiles and show nothing to the believer or as a witness to the world about Jesus, it only speaks to an event significant to Jews.

Celebrating Hanukkah and ignoring Christmas is a testimony to the watching world that one is a Jew and they reject Jesus as Messiah. They don't study the OT with an eye for possible similarities to anything related to Christmas, they only observe your practices.

I refuse to allow legalistic interpretations or fearful avoidance of Christmas to rob me of celebrating God With Us. He gave up His rightful place in glory to take on flesh and become a servant, giving up His very life to pay my debt that I was unable to pay, and I will celebrate His matchless gift and I will do it publically so that there is no question that I am His.

Oh dear, some of the trees in my yard have decorations on them, like windchimes.
One of them (an olive tree) actually has been shaped like a human face, completed with wires that are shaped like eyeglasses and white plastic balls that have been to look like eyes.
Some of them have presents in them in the form of tennis balls, softballs that have been lost in there.

And it is sinful to hang plastic easter eggs on trees in the spring, too. Only thing worse than that are plastic pink flamingos.
