If I could digress from all this pro baseball talk for a moment, I want to mention that my old high school's team is in the State Tournament semi-finals this morning. they're currently the #1 team in the state with a record of 30-4, and they've got a real bunch of heavy hitters in their lineup. One kid, Matt Frazer, is hitting .905 (19-21) for the sectionals and regionals. That's not a misprint, folks - .905! And for the season, he's hitting .534 with 11 HR and 49 RBI. I sure hope that my boys win it all this year, because they lost in the semis last year and were bitterly disappointed over that. The game begins in a little over a half-hout at the home field of our minor league team, the WV Power. And it's just up the street from my office, so I might try to sneak up there for a few minutes.

OK, back to "the big boys!"

Duane

Ever seen the movie "My Blue Heaven" with Steve Martin? If not, rent it. You'll really appreciate the last scene. The whole movie is hysterical.

I've got the game on the radio right now, and my guys are up 1-0 in the first with no one out. The Frazer kid got walked in his first time up. And they just scored another run on a bloop single, so it's 2-0.

Yo, Bill, I don' tink we gonna need any help from da' umps. "Sides, dose guys are State troopers and city cops - I tink they'd laugh off anyting you'd say to 'em, 'cuz youse don' godenuf clout roun here. I'm witchu, Bill, about "My Blue Heaven" being a really funny flick! Steve Martin oughta be mad an honorary goombah for his performance!

After a stolen base, another base hit makes it 4-0 with still no outs . . . and the starting pitcher just got pulled. Oops, there's 1 out after the number 6 hitter K'd.

Yes, we do. And he's also the second best hitter on the team for average and the leading HR and RBI man. His pitching stats for the season: 10-1, 2.23 ERA, and more than 2 K's per inning.

Another update: beginning the top of the 2nd, it's 8-0 in favor of my Nitro Wildcats. And Chase Pickering, the pitcher for NHS has K'd everyone he's faced (5). His totals for the year now are 148 strikeouts in 70-2/3 innings. He's a top pro prospect, at 6'3" and left-handed with an 87-88 mph fastball.

Can't wait till Tuesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yankees-Blue Jays so I will get to see all the games. Interesting to see Joba start for the first time. Plus the Jays bats have been hot as of late. So it is going to be interesting to see how they do in Yankee stadium.

After listening to WIS News Radio this evening I'm so depressed I feel like I deserve to lose my car, especially since there's a pack of wolves devouring everything in sight right now and I do deserve to lose it.

So what happened, Duane? Should I have sent down Vito and Guido?

Nope! No need, Bill. Sorry that it's taken me so long to get back to you guys, but the weekend was pretty crazy for me. My Wildcats finished off their opponent on Friday 10-0 in 4.5 innings, thanks to the 10 run "Mercy Rule." That put them in the Finals against Fairmont Senior High. They were only ahead 2-0 going into the bottom of the 4th, when they exploded for 5 runs. Holding FSHS scoreless in the top of the 5th, they scored 3 more in the bottom of the inning to take their first Class AAA State title by an identical 10-0 score. This may not have been the best team in WV history, but they were definitely in the Top 5. The funny thing about this whole championship is that Chase Pickering, their top player (and probable State Player of the Year) wasn't the star of the weekend - it was his kid brother, Andrew! Andrew, who's only a sophomore, smacked 3 HR in the two games. His first provided the last run on Friday, his 2nd served to really break open Saturday's game, and the third (in the bottom of the 5th), which made the score 8-0, was an absolute bomb. He hit it totally out of the ballpark, into the city street beyond the walls; it bounced into a warehouse across the street, then came down the stairs and back into the street again! What a shot!! And the other star of the game was a young guy, Brett McClanahan, who hadn't played team baseball since Little League. He's a highly prized basketball recruit, who took a shot at football his senior year, then played b-ball, and finally turned to baseball. He went 3-3 on Satruday - all of them extra-base hits (2 doubles and a triple)! Unreal!! And the best part is that they're gonna be loaded again next year; there's only 3 seniors on the squad. Can you say "2 in a row?"

Oh, btw, one more thing about Chase and Andrew Pickering: their mother died during basketball season while they were playing a game. She'd been sick for awhile, but her death still hit them pretty hard. They dedicated their efforts this season to her memory, and look waht happened!

Hey! Look at what the Reds are doing! They're playing some great ball right now, Jay Bruce is the second coming of "Roy Hobbs," and they swept the Braves over the weekend! Yip-yip-yip-yahooooooooo!!!

Duane

When you listen to the NCAA tournament and your team goes you turn frustrated, especially since I've had football and basketball seasons where our hated rival got in postseason and we didn't (they didn't make postseason in baseball).

I feel like I lost my car on Pinks, or as I love to tell my voice teacher, I feel like I want to take my own life! (That's a running gag between the two of us thanks to Menotti's The Consul and the incident that took place the week before a performance!)

Yes, I mean it. The 64-team tournament is one of the toughest in sports.

Well, it looks like my season's over already. A 4 game sweep by the statistically worst team in the majors left the entire Mets team looking like they've given up. When the camera panned down the length of the bench after yesterday's loss to the Padres every head was hanging and you could see the quit in their eyes.

Hey, Billy-boy! Didja see Junior's 600th last night? Unfortunately, I missed seeing it actually happen, 'cuz my f-i-l was watching Jeopardy! But I did see the replay, so it wasn't a total wipeout. And I'm so glad that he has done without "the juice." He's always been clean on his tests, and he's never really gotten bulky, so that pretty much shows me that he did it the right way.

I saw part of the replay this morning. All I got to see was his swing and the scramble in the stands. Can you imagine what his stats would be if he hadn't missed so many games? You can have Bonds, even before he started juicing. For my money Junior's the best ever. I've never heard him whine or complain, just goes out and plays. My kinda ball player.
