Hi Leslie! My name's Kim! [:D]

Hi Christi and Kim! Thanks for the welcome to the thread.
Yes I am a huge Giants fan. I grew up in a Giants household and I married my DH who is also a Giants fan...needless to say, my kids are fans too.
My DS is named JT...not specifically after JT Snow, but it was convenient that it worked out that way. He is almost 9 and loves to play ball and hang out with dad at the high school practices where my DH is the JV baseball coach.
MY DD is only 5 and hasn't fully gotten on board yet, but she is learning.

My biggest boohoo for right now is that my DS gets to go to the Giants home opener with my FIL...fantastic for him, bummer for me...oh well

Bummer, indeed. I'm looking forward to our game starting in a few minutes. We're playing Milwaukee this afternoon and Big Z is pitching.

Our little girl is 3 (almost) and she's already a big baseball fan. We have the Tennessee Smokies (AA farm team for the Cubs) less than 30 minutes from our house. We go to about 10 of their games every year.

noblesinger -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (3/31/2008 2:21:29 PM)

That was so weird, Christi, to see that real nice ballpark just of the interstate. Mary and I went down to see her two sisters in Seymour back in May of '06, and when I got off I-40 and saw the ballpark (not to mention the Bass Pro Shops Superstore), I was absolutely flabbergasted! If we get back down there sometime, I might try to see a game. And who knows, I may even try to call you and hubby to get together with Mary and I. Sound good?

Well, it's Opening Day in Cincinnati and they are in a Rain Delay. I hope that it clears up, 'cuz ah needs to heah "Play Bahllll!!!"

zmanfan38 -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (3/31/2008 2:36:01 PM)

Duane, that would be fabulous! That area has grown into a hot spot. Bass Pro is super nice. It's got a Starbucks inside and a seafood restaurant. We ate there once last year before a game. Our 3 year old loves the waterfall and the humongous aquarium. Just across the interstate, they are leveling a huge hill and word has it that a big mall is going in.

Smokies Park is really nice. There's not a bad seat in the house. We always get the first row along the 3rd base line just above the visiting team's dugout. Let me know when you make plans to come this way and we'll be sure to plan on going to a game with you all!

They just talked to Ernie Banks and he's singing during the 7th inning stretch...cool! And we're in a rain delay too...bummer.

joeshappywife -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (3/31/2008 4:17:48 PM)

We are about equal distance from the Giants, the A' and the A's AAA club in Sacramento (Rivercats). We try to make it each park at least once during the season. My kids love Rivercat's stadium. It is small and they have a grassy area from behind right field all the way around to center. It's $5 a person and you can bring a blanket or a lawn chair. It is a great place to go as a family...much more affordable than the big leagues.

The Giants are opening in about 30 minutes against the D*****s. (Sorry, a true fan cannot utter that word).[:'(] It looks like it is a beautiful day down in LA. Doesn't look like any rain delay in future there. I called to remind DH to turn the game on at work...just wish JT could watch too. Oh well, he'll just have to catch the end of the game when he gets out of school.

BEAT LA!! BEAT LA!! BEAT LA!! BEAT LA!! BEAT LA!! BEAT LA!! BEAT LA!!

As a kid I was a Dodgers fan, because of Fernando. I quit rooting for them when they released him, and have never cared for them since.

But, more to your point, I remember Dusty Baker being a great player for the Dodgers, and I could never understand how he could agree to manage the Giants.

Our household fan status is...
1. Giants
2. A's (gotta stick with the local teams)
3. Red Sox - my MIL is from Boston. Seven years ago my DH and JT went with my in-laws to Boston and we were able to go to a game at Fenway...what an incredible experience. Unfortuanately for JT, he was only 2, so he doesn't remember it much, but we got pictures that he can use to prove that he was there[;)]

When we lived in NJ we took our Hannah to two games at Fenway! One she was in the womb for (but still very present! [;)]) and the other she was 2 months old. They won both games. She loves looking at those photos...she proclaims, "Let's Go Red Sox!" [:D]

Hi and welcome!

I love the Giants.

Years ago- 1993- I got to meet Kurt Manwaring and Matt Williams while I was living in PA. They stopped by the newspaper that I worked for that is not too far away from Manwaring's hometown. They were so nice to me. They were also suprised to see a lady wearing an SF Giants t-shirt so far away from CA! LOL!

I grew up going to Giants games. I think my family would disown me if I wasn't a Giants' fan. [;)]

Terry Francona lives in Yardley, PA...that was about 10 min. drive from where we used to live in NJ (just across the Delaware!). [;)]

Are you glad to be rid of Bonds?

GO DODGERS!!!!!!!

So far the score is 4 to nothing (as in the Giants mean nothing)!

While the answer to your question is "I guess", there is another Barry that I am actually more frustrated with at the moment[:@]
I'm gettin' tired of seeing him give up multiple run first innings.

3tulips -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (3/31/2008 7:26:07 PM)

Do you want to tell everyone the final score, or shall I?

I LOVE L.A. [:D]

joeshappywife -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (3/31/2008 8:44:05 PM)

yeah, yeah, yeah....I have no false hopes for this year....a local radio broadcaster up here has told us all to view the Giants as an expansion team...meaning that we are rebuilding not only a team but a whole franchise....so, I have a feeling that wins are going to be few and far between...anyway, it was 5-0...the bad guys.

We saw Zito pitch in Fenway! When he was with the A's...he got rocked. [;)][8D][:D]

Check back to your baseball history books: Leo Durocher was the manager for both the Dodgers and the Giants . . . when they were both in NY! Boy! Talk about hard times! Could you imagine what it might have been like if Joe Torre had gone from the Yanks to the Mets? It might have brought about riots in the streets of NYC!

Maybe in the Bronx, but in Queens they'd be throwing a parade for Joe and giving Willie the big boot. I was kinda hoping the Mets would fire Randolph and sign Torre. Watch out for the Dodgers, Torre knows how to win.

Exactly. That is why we are happy to have him. What a win last night!

joeshappywife -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (4/3/2008 11:09:54 AM)

What a weird game last night...at least the Giants were able to finally pull out the win.

Christi - it looks like the Cubs and Giants are gettin off to a rough start

Kim - Go Sox[:)]

Yeppers.

My husband has already said "wonder if we'll go 0 and 162 this year".[:@] That irks me. He finally said he was joking.

BlindLemon5103 -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (4/4/2008 10:50:49 AM)

White Sox fan here from Chicago's Southwest Side....

Good to see baseball again after a long winter! I'll be in attendance at the home opener Monday (Apr. 7), and look forward to going to several more games this season. (I average about 7 games per year).

I can't see our team getting higher than third place this year, but they should be better than last year's abomination! I'm concerned about old, slow sluggers and thin starting pitching.

I'm hoping for good things from Nick Swisher, Orlando Cabrera and the new bullpen guys (Linebrink and Dotel). I'm also hoping Jose Contreras can return to form. A healthy Joe Crede helps, though they will probably end up trading him.

My favorite players are Bobby Jenks and A.J. Pierzynski. I'm also fond of Konerko, Thome and Buehrle.

Blessings to all!

dinomax55 -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (4/4/2008 2:48:13 PM)

All I have to say is.. Go Tribe! Let's actually make it to the World Series this time..
I used to hate just the Yankees, but the Red Sox are starting to annoy me a little. I was happy for them in '04, breaking the curse and all, but now..

noblesinger -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (4/7/2008 11:24:10 AM)

If first starts are any indication of how the rest of their seasons will go, then the Reds have a couple of swell young arms on their roster. First, it was Johnny Cueto fanning 10 batters over 7 innings in his very first start, then in yesterday's game, Edison Volquez struck out 8 in his 5-1/3 innings. And the Reds are playing some good baseball so far this season. Junior got HR No. 594 for his career yesterday, they've had some key late inning hits, and the bullpen has done a great job of keeping things relatively close - except for Friday night. I'm still guardedly optimistic, but that's better than being pessimistic!

So it took Pedro a whole 60 pitches to go down for this season. Pulled hamstring, official word is he's out for 6 weeks. Common sense says seeya after the All Star break. Experience says another $12 million, 6 start season. [:@]

Apparently Mike Hampton from my beloved Braves has the same injury bug.

uncabeeil -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (4/7/2008 2:58:46 PM)

They were talking about him during the game yesterday. What a shame. He's one of the greats when he's healthy. Loved him when he was in NY. In fact, I hated to see him leave. I think it's time for both of them to hang 'em up.

zmanfan38 -> RE: THE 2008 BASEBALL THREAD (4/7/2008 3:03:34 PM)

I hear you all about injury prone phenoms. Kerry Wood was on the DL all the time and now he's our closer. He's doing really well so far too. I wondered if he'd really be able to go from opening day starting pitcher to closer, but he's taking the role and running with it...just doing his best and doing well.

Wonder if Hampton would do better in a role like that? Not throwing so many pitches at a time.
