Besides it's really just his way of shortening "this is the wife that I am always thinking about and talking about."

I love your perspective, lexie!

I would never, EVER, call my wife "the wife." It is not worth the bills I would have to pay as a result of removing her foot from my hindquarters.

I guess, the wife, is better than this: "sweetheart, love, wonderful, counselor, all mighty....." eeek! To which I reply, "STOP Right There!"

~ Ladies ~

First of all, happy valentines!

next, how do you feel when a guy refers to his spouse as "...the wife"? As a (very) longtime single I've always considered it to be slightly disrespectful; like "...the car" or "...the house"

I see it as being disrespectful just the way you explained the way you see it. When people ask my husband "how is the wife doing" he lets them know that my name is Nicole and not "the wife". It bothers him when men say that.

My husband says this all the time. Of course he stands up and puffs out his chest and acts proud. He says, "Have you met the wife?" , I respond to them with, "Yes, I am the one with all the power ." He nods. We both laugh. He is the final authority in our home, but he has to run it by me first.

What I find interesting is that, so simple a statement brings out such a variety of emotions, depending on the person. And they are strong emotions, too. I think that is half the reason we get on each other's nerves. One says a statement that would make them proud and the other gives them the hairy eyeball for even thinking such a thing.

BTW, my husband has taken to not even saying The...it is just WIFE. Of course I fire back, Yes Sir...and it is all in jest. Heaven help anyone who over hears our conversations sometimes, without understanding the underlying humor going on.

LOL! That sounds like the response my DH would give. I don't particularly care for how it sounds, but I can't imagine DH calling me that anyway. He usually calls me the Queen (and treats me like it, too )

My husband occasionally refers to me as "The Social Director" or his "better half". I don't think I've ever heard him call me "The Wife", but it really wouldn't bother me one bit.

Now that I think about it, he does sometimes call me his appointment secretary.

I don't think that it's derogatory. It all depends on;

a) the tone of voice;
b) the topic of conversation &
c) the relationship you have with the individuals to whom you're speaking.

Everything is relative.

As soon as we were married, I began to notice that DH referred to me (constantly) as "my wife" in every situation where he spoke of me to someone else, even when I was present.

I thought I might need to be offended by that, so I asked him why he did it... his response? "I like that you're mine. I don't want anyone to ever forget it..."

I melted.

I'll take 'the wife' anyday over 'mommy'. *shudders* My friend's husband calls her mommy and I can't STAND it. Ugh...don't call me that!

Yeah, I think I'd bristle at 'Mummy'.

I don't like it. It reminds me of a guy I knew who was cheating on his wife and would only refer to her as "SHE" and "HER" It burned me up. (Eventually their marriage was able to be reconciled, but it took a long time.) Now "my wife" is nice :) But this is just my personal opinion. Other's might feel differently.

Now see, I have more problem with 'my wife' said in a particular tone than with 'the wife'. I guess I've just known a few too many men who consider their wives a piece of personal property rather than someone to be loved and cherished.

Words aren't disrespectful, the intention is.

You could even take it to mean a compliment. She's THE wife. Epitome. One and only. Not a, not mine as opposed to yours, but THE wife.

/shrugs

I've never thought about it before this thread. Obviously, with a certain intonation and/or physical gesture, it could be disrespectful. Eye rolling, "It's the wife calling." Grimacing, whatever. Or it could be exclaimed with pleasure. "It's the wife calling!"

The phrase on it's own isn't inherently insulting, to me.

Yes. you're right. It's probably a personal thing. I know I wouldn't want to be referred to as 'the wife'. It sounds too impersonal like the couch, the radio, the kitchen. But then again, my sister's husband calls her 'bird' and 'sweet' and she loves it. I wouldnt want anyone calling me 'bird'. Hello, do I have wings? But it's the state of the relationship that determines how people react to things. My sis and husband are obviously happy together and happy enough to give each other insane pet names.

I don't care for it personally, but I don't know that is bad or good to say. It depends on how it is said and whether the actual wife of the person saying it likes it or not.

"the president", "the king", "the queen", "the wife". sounds dignified and respectful enough for me, although it would be better if a military band broke out in "hail to the wife" whenever "the wife" was uttered.

m'love reminded me that The Wife is a good thing... In some countries you could be refered to The first wife, The second wife...In some countries a man can legally have four wives at once.
