I have to agree with you Jhud~
I actually love music and also have my preference. Lately though I have stopped going to this church. It's where I had my son dedicated, it is a nice church but ever since they lost their band, membership declined.
Well now that they restored their "music" ministry, That's all I hear. I mean 1 1/2 to 2 hrs of music. Well I came to hear a message. I can sing and play music at home.
Are churches trying to reach ppl in this manner? Than they are going the wrong way?
I have a 2 y/o and it's very difficult for me to keep him entertained until I can hear the message. ( their Sunday school doesn't have anyone my childs age. Their children are much older)
So needless to say, I stay home

What I was really talking about is the jumping up and down, like they were at a rock concert.
It just seems they were really just enjoying the music. Not true worship. Most of them were kids, but I did see an old man in his sixties or seventies jumping up and down too. That was really funny.

I don't see anything wrong with enjoying the music along with the worship. I love being in services that are full of young people, and I love services where people dance. There's no way you can judge their hearts and say they were just 'enjoying the music' and not truly worshipping. I dance all over the place, but the ONLY time I do it is when I'm deep in worship and the Holy Spirit fills me with a joy where I have to dance, so if you saw me you might think, "she's just partying with the music and not really worshipping." You'd be dead wrong in that judgement.
It's fine for people to go to a church that has the kind of music they can relate to. I see no problem in that.

Why would true worship look the same for everyone, considering the vast number of personalities and uniqueness of each child of God?

I agree. True worship will come out of each of us differently. Some shout, some don't., etc. I don't think it matters.

I grew up hearing hymns, not until in my teenage years did I ever hear more of the "contemporary" style praise and Worship. I love them both. The hymns bring flashbacks to my childhood years, I love the richness of their words, they hold a special place in my heart :)

I'm just the opposite. I love it when an instrumental is played behind praying and speaking. For me, it makes things flow so much more freely and it actually helps me in my prayer. When I lead worship, I'll play quietly behind people also.

Music is very important to me. When I don't like the music; I usually leave the church. Too bad, but I really love beautiful music, it helps me to see the beauty of the Lord!

I'm going to post more of what I think, but please know that I'm not making a judgment on you personally because clearly music helps you in your prayers.
For me, I always wonder, "Why the music while you pray? Who are you praying to? Is this prayer for us, or for God? Does God care if there is beautiful music playing while we are praying? Is this prayer a prayer of show, emotion, or performance, with choreographed music?"
I prefer the simple prayers from the heart of a person without the hoopla or musical setting or pretty, pleasant atmosphere. Today in many churches everything is about sensory, making everything beautiful in OUR eyes, and this disturbs me. It reminds me of the man who prays loudly on the street corner--completely aware of the audience around him. I'd rather have the prayers of the person praying as if God is the only audience--truly an audience of One.
This is the Almighty God we are talking to, and He sees right through all the prettied up stuff straight to the heart of man. I approach God with fear and trembling, with great love and awe, and with honor, and I just feel plain WEIRD and STRANGE to be praying with beautiful music in the background.

That's just a matter of the worship leader growing in his gift to lead and learning when to be quieter and when to get louder. With continued training, most leaders should grow in their understanding of this.

I think you hit it on the head there, "you prefer". It is a matter of preference only. I'm sure God doesn't give a hoot whether we pray with music or without. When I'm praying alone in my prayer closet I always have music playing quietly in the background also. For me, it brings a worshipful atmosphere and encourages me in my prayers.
I think in that statement, you are also assuming that it's not "simple prayers from the heart" when people are praying with music behind them. That would be an incorrect assumption, since music has no bearing on our humility.
But to each his own. It's ok because God loves it when we pray however we do it.

But just try and reign in that 18 yo "Clapton" running blues riffs at 90 mph so quietly you can barely hear it but really want to. That can be just as distracting as too loud. (at least to other musicians)

I've relocated for work often. As I've searched for a church home, I immediately dismiss the ones with loud music. I've accepted drums and guitar, but I'm content without them. I don't like loud music of any type. I don't think it's wrong, it's just not for me so I don't attend churches with that kind of music. My preference is hymns with a contemporary song here or there, but primarily hyms.
So yes I care too much about music.
