Both films are about a father and a son who don't see eye to eye. In October Sky, the father wants his son to work with him in the coal mines; a family trade. In Ratatouille, the father wants his son to stay with the family because he can smell poisoned food. In both cases the fathers wants to keep their sons back, and the son wants to retain his individuality by seeking excellence away from home.

A little enlightenment is requested. In October Sky, the kid was EXPECTED to just go to work in the coal mines, and not really even give much thought to anything else. No questions asked. Of course, God was leading him "elsewhere", and his father thought he was "foolish" to think about doing anything else (and, was likely bitter because he knew that whatever "dreams" he had as a kid were gone....never to return) In Ratatouille...same situation...here was a rat that was supposed to just "accept" his "lot" in life as a rat (instead of a coal miner). BUT, he had bigger dreams. To be a chef. His father, and other relatives, thought he was strange and odd for not just being "what he was expected to be"....His inspiration wasn't his "teacher", like it was in "October Sky.....but the famous Chef Gusteau, who encouraged everyone by saying "ANYONE can cook!"....and, Remy KNEW he had a "gift" for cooking....and, knew he could succeed at "bigger and better" things than simply being a garbage eating rat...just as the kid in "Sky" knew he was "meant" for bigger and better things in life, as well.... So, there ya go....my master's thesis on similarities between "October Sky" and "Ratatouille".... With regards to "October Sky", that's my life in a nutshell, as well....and probably that of MANY people.

I read this thread with interest, because I love FTG, and because I know there are better made movies out there. I've also seen Flywheel, and while it is not as well-made, it is a better story. I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth. I hear a lot of people complaining because FTG isn't Hollywood quality, and can't Christians do better? My response is no, we CAN'T. We haven't been making movies as long as the secular world, and we don't have the studios or the money to do it. Since Sherwood productions showed so much improvement between their first and second movies, and showed with their first movie they have the potential to be creative, I can't WAIT for the third. Christian movies are an up and coming industry, and it isn't fair to expect them to be as good as multi-million dollar Hollywood productions. We haven't come that far yet. I think we will, though.

Actually, Christian movies have been around since the 70's, because I remember being subjected to the torture of them in youth meetings back then. And yes, there are enough Christians out there to support a Christian movie industry, and there are enough Christians with the money required to bankroll a decent effort....so no, there is no excuse why Christian made films should wallow in mediocrity....

That's exactly why this movie frustrated me, because I know non-believers who have watched it, and were turned so much more off to Christianity by it. It makes Christians seem like a real selfish breed.

It's not about being selfish but God making the impossible POSSIBLE. In our modern era with technology and medicine, we have forgotten to believe in a miracle working God. He still works in our day...we just have to be open to it. The whole message was, "If we win, we give God the glory. If we lose, WE STILL give GOD the glory."

I thought Facing the Giants was a pretty good movie. It was not that well done, and it was sorta predictable, but other than that, I liked it. I also loved how they put one of Third Day's songs in there

We love this movie. It does not matter whether or not anyone else likes it. It is suitable for my family and for me. My Mom told me that they are making another one later this year. It will be made by the same people who made Facing the giants. I don't know if it is a sequal or just another movie. Can't wait!!

Actually, the car dealer one was called FLYWHEEL and came out a year or two before FACING THE GIANTS. FLYWHEEL is an even more amateurish production. The Kendrick brothers are currently working on their third film, which will no doubt leave many less discriminating moviegoers in breathless anticipation. Sorry, it just bugs me to see so many jump on board the mediocrity bandwagon just because it has "Christian" attached to it....

There are some well made ones and some that have good messages like FTG. "Preparing for Rain"...love it!!!

I loved Facing the Giants. The message was inspiring and uplifting. I think some of you are being way too nit picky in pointing out faults, but regardless, God's name was praised. The new movie, I believe it is called Firewall will be released in August. Kirk Cameron has a starring role.

Just watched the "Trailer" for "Fireproof".....yes...good message, Iam sure....but, sitting through yet another movie in which the actors/actresses seem as if they are merely "reading their lines"?....(which I saw plenty of in the brief 2 min./17 sec. preview to the movie)... I typically see better acting, or at least comparable, from at the "musicals" that our children's choir (grades 1-6) at church have, which put on 2 performances a year......and, the "older" youth dept. (grades 7-12) musicals/productions? definitely better acting.... Will most likely "pass" at the theatre...and wait until I can see it as a "rental".....maybe....
