We've had Love Comes Softly played on the TV a couple of times, and the next one once. Unfortunately that's about as much as they allow of Christian programmes on the TV here.

You can watch online at www.tbn.org. They broadcast in Australia too so you might be able to find their channel.

They are OK. The Abrams daughters series is good, but each novel ends unsatisfactorily. You keep expecting a fairytale ending, but it's like life... no guarantee of circumstances being fun. It's very different from her early novels where the innocent girl always end up with the dashing (and dare I say Heroic?) Canadian Mountie.

I just realized that I have been mixed up...again. The Abram's Daughters series is by Beverly Lewis and not Oke.

They may play it on cable, but we don't have cable. Thanks for the thought though.

I don't know about all cities, but in Atlanta you can get it without having cable/satellite. You can get it on cable too, of course, but it's also among the free channels here. Don't know if it's like that everywhere or not though.

Ok....to recommend few other authors similar to Oke...

Try Karen Kingsbury (her books always make me cry---they are so realistic & down to earth--very good) and Judith Pella as well as Michael Phillips. Those are some of my faves & I didn't see that anyone had mentioned them when I scrolled through the replies.

deedodees -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/11/2008 12:30:08 AM)

I like Beverly Lewis and Karen Kingsbury too

cherish405 -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/11/2008 1:25:22 PM)

I haven't read any books by Karen Kingsbury, Judith Pella, Michael Phillips or Beverly Lewis. I might have to give them a try.

sunluvingirl -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/14/2008 8:10:53 AM)

I just finished listening to Rekindled by Tamera Alexander. It is a VERY touching and interesting story. I won't give away the ending for the sake of those of you who want to read it![:)] I wish I could find the rest of the series on CD, Its so much easier to listen to the story while doing other things then to sit down and read a book.

cherish405 -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/14/2008 10:48:40 AM)

I've just started reading it, but I'm finding it hard to get into. Mind you, at the moment, I'm finding all reading hard to get into. My concentration span is having a bit of difficulty.

Thats why I just love listening to the stories. They seem much more real, I think. But unfortunately most of the good books are not recorded.[:(] Its been ages since I've read a book from cover to cover.

cherish405 -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/15/2008 3:54:49 AM)

For me, concentration span is dependant upon depression. When it's bad, I just can't concentrate. For years, I couldn't read for that reason. Only in recent months have I been able to get back to being the bookworm that I used to be, and making up for lost time whilst I've been at it. Hopefully it won't be long before I can get back to reading again.

Kingsbury and Lewis are great! I haven't read anything by the other ladies yet.

sunluvingirl -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/21/2008 7:26:05 PM)

Michael Phillips has some pretty interesting ones. My family & I listened to one of the Heathersleigh Hall series (I forgot which one) and it really held our attention. Lewis is pretty good if you feel like reading about amish.

cherish405 -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/22/2008 12:23:15 PM)

I'm just about finished chapter 4 of the second book.

I think I might have a Michael Phillips book about 2 girls(?) I think there's one white girl and an African American girl in the time of slavery. I couldn't get into the book at the time. I know that it's there for when I'm better able to get into the storyline.

alias007 -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/22/2008 4:20:55 PM)

Give Angela Hunt a try. Start with The Novelist. It's probably my favorite, although I haven't read all of hers yet.

Its the Shenandoah Sisters series. I think there are 4 books in the series, at least thats what I have.

I don't think I've ever heard of Angela Hunt. Does she do historical fiction?

I'm not aware if the Michael Phillips book I have is part of a series. I should check that out.

She does write some historical fiction, although most of her works would be considered contemporary fiction.
Here's a website that has a lot of information about her:

I love Terri Blackstock and read all of her books. I was at the library the other day & asked the librarian if she knew of any good Chrsitian authors. She recommended Lori Wick. I think they are along the lines of Jannette Oke.

I've got some Lori Wick books, but haven't started reading them yet.

I've never heard of Terri Blackstock.

brownmommy -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/28/2008 3:15:36 PM)

Amen to the Lori Wick and Karen Kingsbury. You can't go wrong with any of their books. I highly suggest the Baxter Family series by Karen Kingsbury (Starts with Redemption series). She is finishing the 3 series about this family now. WONDERFUL!!!

HisCovenant -> RE: Any authors like Janette Oke? (5/28/2008 3:40:23 PM)

Terri Blackstock like Oke? Karen Kingsbury like Oke? Either I am not recalling Oke books correctly or don't have enough experience with Blackstock and Kingsbury to make the connection. Aside from being Christian authors, what are the connections between Oke and them?
