So I am thinking of doing South Beach. Does anyone have any experience with that? Does it work?

I'm doing Nutrisystem which apparently is a lot like South Beach as far as balancing good carbs with proteins and the right fats. My good friend is doing South Beach and both of us have gotten those carb cravings under control.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

Personally, I just eat sensibly. I would not, personally, go on any kind of diet where certain foods were forbidden. There are things that I know I have a tendency to overeat if they are around (Rice Krispie Treats!)- so I don't have them around (or make them, eat some, and get rid of the rest quick!). I plan my meals around whole foods- lean meats, veggies & fruits, olive oil, whole grains. I find ways to make the things I like the most in healthier ways.

But I never allow myself to feel deprived. I have chocolate & popcorn with olive oil & garlic salt every night (usually a brownie I make with olive oil & whole wheat flour). Sometimes I have chips or chicken nuggets or pop or other "treats" but I limit myself to one serving. If I give in to some kind of temptation during the day, I skip the brownie &/or popcorn at night (or do an extra half hour of exercise!). I also make sure I have lots of healthy snacks- like fruit- around for when I am hungry.

This is something I can do every day, regardless of what snags pop up (parties, holidays, stress) and can do for the rest of my life.

I used to try those too, and they would work for awhile, but inevitably, I get fed up with it and decide 3 Musketeers and ice cream for dinner sounds good.

I think that's what is making what I'm doing so easy for me. I get pasta, pizza, potatoes, desserts(brownies, chocolate bars, carmel popcorn, etc)...all the things I couldn't have before, just engineered and balanced a little differently and portion controlled. It makes it much more livable since I never feel deprived. I've also eaten several meals off my program when we've gone out, just trying to eat sensibly and stay balanced, and it hasn't hindered steady weight loss.

Welcome Reach!!

Tara, I'm with you. I try to limit the bad carbs, but try to eat sensibly. I do count calories (although not right now, I don't want to restrict yet, I'm still nursing). But the nice thing about counting calories is that I can eat whatever I want, as long as it's within my calorie number. That way nothing is off limits and for me when something is restricted I want it.

I've been doing really good this week. I made up my 'rule' list. No eating after 8, fruits and veggies (with hummus) in between meals, 96 oz of water, a protein, whole grain and fruit or veggie at every meal, run 3x a week and tone 3x a week. So far, so good. I'm proud of myself!

I found a worm in the apple I was just eating. Ew. Does that count as protein?

Yeah, it would, but I wouldn't want to make it a regular part of my diet.

I'm still struggling with feeling down today because of the lousy weather and my depression, but so far, I'm doing okay with my food. I had oatmeal with milk and Splenda and 3 cups coffee with milk. I do try to restrict my carbs, because I've found that I have better weight loss success when I do. Most carbs make me feel sick and fat, so I try to limit my consumption of certain ones that make me want to go pig out on them.

Lately, I've been doing just that though, because of my depression, but that just makes me feel worse, so I've decided not to do that today. I'm planning to have a healthy lunch and dinner, with a couple snacks. To me, healthy is lots of meat, dairy and veggies with some fruits and less breads, pasta, rice and starchy veggies such as potatoes. I do eat some of these items, I just try not to eat too much of them, as they seem to find their way to my stomach and hips.

(((Melissa))) Emotions do play a role in loosing weight, don't they? I know when my daughter is not listening and my son is not sleeping well I just want to eat eat eat. Somehow I can point to each pound and blame it on something else. But mostly it's me who put it there.

Depression:

Some evidence suggests that exercise raises the levels of certain mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain. Exercise may also boost feel-good endorphins, release muscle tension, help you sleep better, and reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Exercise isn't a cure for depression or anxiety. But its psychological and physical benefits can improve your symptoms.

I would suggest those who are fighting depression might like to go to msn.com a click on heath/fitness and type in on the search "depression and exercise".

I am trying to keep the walking schedule on track and I now weight the lowest so far. I like the idea of trying on the jeans and seeing how loose-fitting they are now is a good measure of our success.

Keep with it !

I have postpardum depression and am on meds for it, however, I am exercising to 'self-medicate'. It does help.

Welcome! reach!

Sounds like you are on the right track!

I am not interested in restrictive diets that don't work for me. I would crave those no-no foods then I would gorge on these very foods. I prefer eating
healthy, minimize the junk food and exercise.

We are here to encourage, share, and aim for a healthy lifestyle!

I found a book on a different kind of eating. It has you break down your eating to 50% carbs, 25 protein, 25% fat. That way I can eat reagular food,s, but I need to focus on portions. That will help me, as I run 40 min 3 times a week, and it is hard to run with no carbs in your system.

I am going to try that.

Hormonal issues had me SO tired the past few days that I napped twice each day (and I never nap!). BUT, I forced myself to get my exercise in and even went for a walk yesterday- even though I was alone and it was bitterly cold! Ended up finding a very nice park with lookout binoculars (like they have at places like Niagra Falls, but free) and a sundial (the kind that uses your body's shadow).

Even though I had to force myself to get out there and move, it did make me feel a lot better!

Lost 1/2 a lb, which is better than gaining! But also, my pants are all now too big. As soon as I have some money, I am going to have to go clothes shopping!

Hello ladies :)

I have just returned after a long absence and I can say that I have also struggled with my weight quite a bit actually.

"Short" background story....
In 2004 I got fed up enough with having let myself go as much as I had I decided to do something about it finally, so I did. In about 2 years I had lose 30 pounds through counting calories (like above posters I did not limit WHAT I ate, just reduced my portions, gave myself a "cheat day" where I didn't count calories but didn't go crazy either) and exercising. I was actually 10 pounds lighter than I was when I graduated HS and I felt great!!! I had maintained that until this past March when we had to put our dog down who had suffered, albeit shortly, with a fast-acting lymphoma :( It was an EXTREMELY hard time for us as she had only just turned 6. A mere 2 months after we had to let her go I lost my mom to a blood clot at 54 years old I had gotten to a point where I just didn't care anymore and started eating a lot, eating out a lot, and we also started drinking again (by we I mean my husband and I). The drinking is I think/know the main reason I packed on so much weight so fast and obviously it has been because I haven't exercised regularly and consistently in a LONG time. I have gained it all back and then some in a very short time period which is never good.

I have once again said enough is enough and am determined now more than ever to get back to where I was at this past summer, which will require me to lose roughly 30-40 pounds or so. My husband and I are going to Florida in May for his best friend's wedding and I will be seeing a friend of mine whom I will not have seen for 10 years come May, so I have made the end of my April my "goal date" to have dropped at least 20-25 pounds of that total 30-40.

My new plan of action is I have started a reduced/low-fat "diet" and am counting calories/fat grams, and going to start exercising on a regular basis again (I have an AeroPilates machine, DVDs, weights). I have also started Alli to help me along and so far so good with that. I have already lost 2 pounds since Sunday (I started eating better the past couple weeks actually).

The good thing is that I know that I have already achieved weight loss in the past, so I KNOW that I can do it again if I just stay motivated and focused.

Keep at it ladies. We can do this and with each other's support it just makes it all that much easier to deal with

Medication is a big one, as I have read in this previous post. I am on medication that made me gain weight....its very hard to cope with but I am praying each day that God would help me. Currently I go to the gym and do the treadmill as well as rollerblading. I think it helps if you are surrounded by people who can support you. For example when I lived with my mom she did not care too much about her health and cooked good for that was bad for you. Now that I am with my dad he is very health conscious and I noticed this has helped me make better food choices.

Has anyone ever considered getting surgery? I have...I will be honest. I have considered liposuction just becasue I feel its unfair that I gained weight not becasue I was making bad choices but becasue of medication complecations. I am actually seeing a doctor about this tomorrow. What does God say about going under the knife...I wonder if He would approve of it?

Personally, no, I would never have surgery. From a Christian standpoint, I see it as an issue of being a good steward. Spending money & time & risking my health on a surgery that is for vanity (which in my case is all it would be) is wasteful. ESPECIALLY when I can get the same results through what is recommended in the Bible- exercise and moderate eating.

Now, I suppose there are situations when surgery is useful and I am not going to judge the actions of others. I have known several people- including my mom & my best friend- who had weight loss surgery. For some, it seemed to be healpful (their health was suffering due to their weight) to others it made the situation worse (one ended up in a nursing home and will likely never be healthy again).

OTOH, I have considered corrective surgery for my eye, which really would be cosmetic. I have a "lazy eye" which is blind from a childhood accident. It can be bothersome in a lot of ways (particularly socially). With that surgery, though, the risk/cost is very low...

all.consuming.fire, welcome to these forums and this thread! I'm not sure exactly what God would say about liposuction or gastric bypass surgery, but I do know that He did give us medical doctors the talents to be able to do these surgeries. On that basis, I feel that it might be okay, but I would strongly recommend finding a Christian surgeon and talking with God about it first.

As for me, I also thought about having gastric bypass done, but decided that I couldn't live the rest of my life on the type of diet needed for it, so I went low carb. I've lost about 115 lbs, not counting the recent plateau I'm in where I fluctuate within gaining and losing the same five lbs. I've been depressed due to the cold, wet weather and family stress issues, so I've been cheating on my diet a lot, so that might be why I'm not having much success.

I'm making a new commitment today to go back on my low carb eating plan, because I'm tired of being fat. I WANT to lose weight and I'm GOING to DO IT! I'm also going to start exercising more than I've been doing, since my energy level drops with my depression. I've heard that exercise boosts endorphins, which helps depression, so that's what I'm going to do, at least 10-15 minutes, six days a week. My new goal is to weigh 195 lbs or less by December 31st, so I need to get busy!

Wow that is so inspiring that you lost so much weight. I really command you for that. I know its not easy but you are encouraging me just by your testimony. Yes I gained weight when I became depressed too. It sucks but it happens and we have to deal with it. Recently I told a good friend of mine to pray for me in this area and she said that we never go through things for ourselves but rather for someone else. She said that when I get through this I will be able to help others lose weight as you are encouraging me to do so with your words. Currently I weigh 180lbs and I am suppose to be around 148lbs for my height. I dont really have a goal in mind except that. I should set up a timeline to help me along like you have. Thats great that you have a goal. I have not seen my weight drop in years only gain becasue of the medication. I am so sick of it like you!!! So sick of it that I am ready to do something about it today too. I have to praise God becasue my father has been sooooooo extremely supportive to me about this. He lost like 20lbs and he is ready to help me. Its great to have support. It makes it soooo much easier.

I know you can reach your goal..you sound very motivated. I am with you all the way!

OK, so this week I have done pretty good.

I lost 1.6 from last week. (I weigh on Wed) so I am at 147.0 (I hate to write that down, but I am finally going the right direction and maybe writing it down will help me stick to my plan. I am looking for accountabilty.

Yeah! for loss and not gain!

And I have done so well at sticking to my plan. I even ate out today, but i ate 1/2 of what I would normally eat. I really have my mind set now, and once my mind is in it, I am good.

I went on a short bike ride 20 min and then I did my weights. I tried to do push ups, and I am so weak! I was doing 3 sets of 12 and I barely go through 1 set. I had to keep stopping. But it is OK. I will work my way back up.

Tomorrow i running. I am also going on a bike ride with my husband. And, to save money and calories, we are bringing our sandwiches to the park where we ride. Yeah for me! I am feeling good about this week. I have 2 lb to make it past the 5 mark. :)

Just curious, what is a dress size? 5 lbs? 10 lbs?

Thanks! I did my 1/2 week check in, and I have lost 1 more lb. So I just need to keep it up. Yeah!

I am doing really well on eating and making good choices.

I even went for a bike ride and to the movies, then went running after the movies. So I am very happy with my eating and exercise this week.

I am supposed to do weights today, but we are going to the beach and doing some bike riding and a lot of walking, so I don't think I will get there, but if I get home with some time, I will go.
