Nice perspective. I'm a bit envious of your heritage. Being a generic WASP is a bit like vanilla ice cream minus the vanilla.

Shakespeare, Milton, Donne, Chaucer, Byrd, Wren, Gainsborough, Blow, Taverner, Cranmer. Morris dancing, the Pearly King, Stilton and good beer.

Don't tell me I don't have a culture.

I'm curious how many of you are actually confused by a person's gender for no other reason that how long their hair is.

I've never been the least bit confused. Even with long hair, guys look like guys. Women with short hair syill look like women, and there was no way anyone could have mistaken Sinead O'Conner for a man on her baldest day.

I guess that's why I don't get the argument some are making. I've never been confused either...

And actually, to proclaim one's righteousness and to imply another's unrighteousness IN ANY SITUATION is not what we, as Christians, are supposed to be doing. We're supposed to be glorifying Christ; not ourselves.

1 Corinthians 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

Read it again - and judge yourself against the words.

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

You can be sure that one of the books opened is the Bible - and it against this standard that we will be judged.

I"m so glad you are all talking about this!! I LOOOVEEE Historical Biblical stuff. Actually, the reason why Paul said this was because it was a cultural thing:

quote:

In fact, their own experience in being citizens of Corinth taught them that it is a shameful thing for a man to have long hair, but it is a glory for a woman to have long hair as a covering. The word "nature" here does not necessarily mean that one is born with the specific knowledge that long hair is good for men and bad for women. It merely indicates something that has been habitually observed by the culture for a long period of time.
http://the-churchofchrist.com/passage_study/please_explain_1_corinthians_11116.htm

Now some historians believe Paul said a man isn't suppose to have long hair b/c it signified the man was gay. Gay men in Corinith had long hair. LINK

The "by Nature" phrase came from the philosophers Aristole and Epictetus who claimed that things are what they are 'by nature'. LINK

So Paul saying, Nature itself says a man shouldn't have long hair was a cultural thing. By nature, a man shouldn't be gay. Thus, long hair in Paul's time signified a man was gay which wasn't right. Obviously, times HAVE changed and a man having long hair no longer signifies he is gay. So if a guy wants to have long hair, then so be it. We won't think you're flakey. Unless you carry a purse and wear high heals. Then you just need prayer. Hope that helped. :)

One time, back in highschool. I was a waitress at Walgreens and two people were sitting at one of my tables. I went up and asked very cheerfully, so do you ladies need menus? They turned around and were two teenaged guys. (I was 17 too) I about died. I sent someone else over there to take care of them, I was so embarrassed.

No, men shouldn't have long hair. Read the Word. Besides long hair does not look good on a man, period!

No disrespect intended, but if this is the way you feel, perhaps you should consider changing your avatar.

Kerrlaw I can't give you the five stars this deserves. I hope the five thumbs up smileys conveys my appreciation.

There is hardly a day goes by that I don't see women who are making every attempt to look like men. This could be considered off topic, but it speaks to the need for men to make an extra effort to differentiate themselves.

I'm not changing my avatar and the Word of God always stands. The Word is not something to laugh about and besides, we really don't know what Jesus looked like, it is an artist's interpretation. I think we will all be surprised when we see Jesus as he is.

Whatever he looked like, it is important that our actions be consistant with our professions. By the way, you do know that He is jewish, don't you?
