You are kidding. If you are not sure what short is, and if that is the only thing standing between you and obeying God, then err on the short side.
I am not kidding. Every rule that I see handed down from the Throne that we must follow has had clear guidelines. Every one. Why would God be purposefully hard to understand if this is such an issue? My point is this. It's not the issue people make it out to be. And once you study the verses as well as why they were written, you'll see that. Go study first, and then tell me what you come up with.
quote:

And if nature itself does not teach you that one or two inches, three at most is short - then guys, just go to your hairdresser and say, "I don't want it long, I want it short" and let them cut it. Everyone knows what short is unless they are being deliberately ignorant.
I could easily take offense to this, but I won't. No need. I'm not being deliberately ignorant. I'm trying to draw out a clear answer. According to what I see here, you're suggesting that I take the word of a hairdresser (nothing against hairdresser's) as God's opinion of what short hair should be.

I like Jimbo's answer. Compared to the lion's mane and the horse's, I have a few inches (well more than that for me) to spare.

Now I have to ask you if you're kidding.
quote:

Perform this experiment.

Turn on the TV.
Flick from channel to channel and look at men's hair lengths.
Almost without exception men in the world wear their hair "short".
And they do that without any command from the Bible. Thus nature teaches them how to wear their hair.

Yet, on this forum, its a big question. Its milk folks.

Do the experiment. Be honest (you do take that one literally don't you?).
Tell us what you find. Men do wear their hair 1-2 inches long, in general.
There, that was not so hard. You can know.
Do you really want people to take their cues from television on how to wear their hair?
I go with this. Wear your hair in the way that's comfortable. After all people have been messing up nature's intended design for centuries, and television is more of the same. Take our cues from television?[sm=sadquestion.gif]

GroupW -> RE: Should Men Have Long Hair? (2/29/2008 12:13:13 PM)

Here's an experiment.

Get a crew cut. Go give $100 bucks to a homeless shelter. Invite an unwed mother to dinner. Tutor an inner city kid. Tell a gay man that God loves him.

Grow your hair 2" longer. Go give $100 bucks to a homeless shelter. Invite an unwed mother to dinner. Tutor an inner city kid. Tell a gay man that God loves him.

Grow your hair 6" longer. Go give $100 bucks to a homeless shelter. Invite an unwed mother to dinner. Tutor an inner city kid. Tell a gay man that God loves him.

Is any one better than the other?

Then grow your hair short. Don't drink alcohol. Don't go to movies, dance, play cards, don't do yoga. Vote republican. Keep the $100 bucks. Let the unwed mother use her food stamps.

How much does it really matter?

"Milk" is hyperfocusing on things that aren't central to the message of God's love and redemption. Meat is getting out there and being Christ to your neighbor.

In my opinion, I see way to much "milk" on CW and not enough of God's kind of meat.

So, the experiment in how we should interpret scripture is based on watching TV and not taking the time to actually read scripture and compare passages in it with each other?

SAD!

DaveW -> RE: Should Men Have Long Hair? (2/29/2008 12:28:27 PM)

This thread reminds me of a song---

She asks me why...I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night; Hair that's a fright.
I'm hairy high and low,
Don't ask me why; don't know!
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead; darling

Gimme a head with hair, long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming, steaming, flaxen, waxen
Give me down to there, hair!
Shoulder length, longer (hair!)
Here baby, there mama, Everywhere daddy daddy

----

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy, shining
Gleaming, steaming, flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted; Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled and spaghettied!

Ps103 -> RE: Should Men Have Long Hair? (2/29/2008 12:32:34 PM)

What about those old, powdered wigs men used to wear--the ones pulled back into a ponytail?

It was long hair, but it wasn't theirs.

Does that figure in?

armydude -> RE: Should Men Have Long Hair? (2/29/2008 12:33:47 PM)

Hmmm... Would that fall under lying (about your appearance), vanity (I mean, a white powdered wig), or the standard long hair issue?

This may require a poll![:D]

I've been going over, in my mind, the truly godly men I have personally known and respected over the years; not only for their knowledge of the Bible for for who they are and how they live their lives.

The one thing all these men have in common is their pure passion and zeal for Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The way they genuinely LOVE people because of and through HIM. The very radical changes that they are making in the world; and such changes definitely being for the better. The way that they walk, talk and breath the Gospel of Our Lord; the way they speak the Gospel not only through their words, but also through their actions.

One of these men is always clean-shaven. Sometimes his hair is neatly trimmed; sometimes it's not.

One of these men has a mop for hair. Long unruly curls that swing and bounce when he's all-fired up and proclaiming The Word of God during one of his sermons on Sundays.

One guy I know . . . I think he must get his hair cut every other day. LOL. I have never seen him with the slightest bit of hair growth and he is always immaculately groomed.

There's this other guy . . . I have never seen him without a 5 o'clock shadow; regardless of what time of day it is.

Then there's my friend who has straight hair, long enough to braid; and sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn't.

I could go on and on, giving examples of truly godly men . . . and not a one of them has the same length hair; some of them keep their hair extremely short, some of them intentionally grow their hair long and then there's some who are in the middle of the two extremes. Some have facial hair; others don't.

I have every confidence that they will all be spending their eternity in Heaven, praising Our Lord. I sure hope they all get to meet each other; I know they would have a grand time together . . . simply because of the Men of God that they are; and not anything to do with the length of their hair.

Let us presume that all folks here want to obey all God's commands and suggestions. They are just a little puzzled as to what short hair means.

Let us suppose then that the willing though somewhat puzzled male Christian cuts his hair one or two inches long. Nobody from any generation could call his hair long. Thus, he could feel quite happy that he was fulfilling this command.

There is a far bigger issue at stake here. It is stated in the following verse...
Matthew 5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Now I did not write this.
And hair is a "least commandment".
And another principle kicks in. "because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities." (Luke 19:17)

Everything we do in this life is "very little". But some want to negate it as very unimportant. It may be very little, but it is EXTREMELY important to God, because it tells Him our attitude towards Him. We need to respect, and fear him. If I tell my kid to be home by 11 pm and he disrespects me and comes home whenever he likes - it may be a very little thing to him, but it shows a very big potential problem.

If the worldly menfolk on TV can "naturally" have short hair, are we to abuse the liberty and grace which we have in Christ and have our hair longer, so that from behind, one cannot tell whether the Christian is a male or a female? I say that is a shame. It is a shame that the carnal of the world are better examples in this regard.

Now, I know my popularity stakes are peaking - so I plan to not insult your intelligence by repeating my arguments.

I am a parent so I know when my child is willingly obedient, and when he is looking for every loophole to escape doing what I told him clearly enough to do.

Thankfully Christ was a willing doer of the word and went to the cross - even though He could have argued "But Father God - Abraham, Isaac and a lot of Old Testament folk were saved without the need for my death - I think I will skip crucifixion and concentrate on love. My will be done".

Dude- if you're right, we're all in a world of trouble. Read the next verse:
20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Taking things verse by verse and not handling the text within the context of the whole of the bible is an exceedingly dangerous thing.

I wondering this: WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT? Honestly, most Christians aren't even doing the big stuff that Jesus commanded us to do, yet they worry about this piddly stuff?!

The verse you quote is in the context of the beatitudes.

Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

THESE are the commandments I choose to worry about.

Not really. I actually spend more time on it now than I ever did. It's just that it's a more graceful way for a 41 year old punkrock/rockabilly musician to age.[:D]

I've had a receding hairline since I was 18. I started shaving my head when I was in Iraq ('cause it was so brutally hot there), and I just kept doing it when I got home. I tell people it's time to get a haircut and they look at me like I've lost my mind. One person even brought up the "long hair= sin" idea and I corrected that "quick-fast and in a hurry".

Hayseed -> RE: Should Men Have Long Hair? (2/29/2008 1:38:29 PM)

Yeah, I've had that receding hairline since I was a kid too. Started going gray at 18 as well.

Unfortunately, I've got a Charlie Brown shaped head and don't look good bic'd.

Besides, 4 years of the Marines and having to get a haircut every week I'm still rebelling against.[:D]

I agree with context, context, context. I researched a bit for you good folks some Corinthian culture in the day of Paul.
Men with "long" hair may have been seen as pagan temple priests or homosexuals.
Women with short hair may have been thought to be prostitutes.
Looks change. What Paul is concerned about is young believers being salt and light in a culturally relevant way.
We should all stop splitting hairs.
I have shorter hair, not totally by choice. I'm not a prostitute. Just had to comment about womens hair too. I was feeling left out. [;)]
