I voted I agree with some of what the book I have read said. Concept only, not methodology or motivation. For instance, I have no problem with the idea of training a child not to throw food on the floor. However, my motivation is not less mess for me to clean up, nor a perfectly tidy child. Kids are messy. The reason I would want to begin training for a general sense of tidyness and restraint is that it is an important social skill for successful life. I don't see anything wrong with starting early, but it would certainly not be a matter of punishment or shame for the baby. I have no problem with swatting or spanking for certain things, but I am learning more and more that a No accompanied with a smile and some physical direction makes a spank unnecessary most of the time. [:)] For instance, Biruk has lately started to resist diaper and clothing changes. I could swat, but so far a very authoritative NO usually stops it immediately. If not, I just lean over and hug him until he stops trying to jump off the table. [:D] Likewise, I don't think there's anything wrong with a baby sleeping through the night (IMO, it's wonderful), however it's not "God's way", and night-waking at 9 months isn't going to permanently damage the child's character. Babies are so different I don't see how they can make blanket statements like all children are able to sleep through the night at such and such an age, or all children should be down to three nursings a day at 6 months (and how on earth could a mom keep up a reasonable supply with only 3 nursing sessions in 24 hours?). I personally feel that the mess, the noise, and the inconvenience that comes along with having children has been good for me and the development of my character. Sure, I *could* smack my 3 yo when he eats spaghetti with his hands and I have to dig sauce out of his ears, but I would have missed a great picture and deprived my husband of some serious enjoyment in his kids. For some reason, Spaghetti-Face struck Josiah as really funny, and that doesn't happen often. [8D]
