Hi Manda59, I live in the Fife area, between Edinburgh and Dundee.

Ooh good, that means I'd probably be able to understand your accent. I have *terrible* trouble with the Glaswegian accent!

We love Scotland for holidays, but have only so far gone to the Highlands (Ballachulish/Glencoe area), Mull, Aviemore briefly, and over to St. Andrews (guess which sport mu husband loves!).
I would especially love to return to Ballachulish/Glencoe, and would also like to visit Skye.

Peter, I know that some Scots don't like to be called Brits (and that is totally fine with me). How do you feel about that? (might as well jump in the deep end!)

I was watching Just For Laughs the other night and there was a British comedian named Simon Evans on (I'm not sure if he's actually famous over there.)

The guy made me laugh so hard though. He said "you're probably wondering what my accent is, well I'll tell you, it's 'educated'."

Then he went on to talk about how people say if it weren't for the Americans in WW2 the British would be speaking German right now. He said that's not true because he's heard the British peoples capacity for foreign language.

Then he said, besides if it were true, wouldn't we now be speaking English louder and slower?

(I'm sure it was much funnier when he said it on tv, rather than my writing it out here.)

LOL![:D]

Hi, where do your ancestors hail from?

ummm...well, the McDonald clan (Connell is the Americanized version). Not sure of much else until I get some documents sent to me from a great uncle.

I just know they came over and ended up in Darlington, SC and then went on down into central Florida.

Good question! Manda and I are both in England and we use the term 'Brits' against the Yanks. Any addition to our ranks is always welcome![;)]

I'm curious where you place me[;)]

Doinkdom - have you tried ancestry.com? My mom used it to trace her family in England and she has been able to trace the family tree back very far.

agapetos -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/3/2008 6:42:19 PM)

Oh you're a Canadian Lexie, but you're one of us as opposed to one of them![;)]

LOL....you're right Manda....thanks Aga!!! I wasn't sure if you were secretly laughing at the Canadian [;)]

Nah...

doinkdom -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/4/2008 12:35:21 PM)

I was waiting to get the info from my uncle so I would have proper names and exact spellings, etc.

But I may go to ancestry.com just to see the site...thanks

lexie -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/4/2008 12:47:14 PM)

You can get a free 14 day trial from ancestry.com I believe. It doesn't hurt to go and look around, but it might be better to wait until you get the info. If you have any names already you can start. I think there is some free stuff that you can do there (it may give you a bit of info and then tell you to sign up to get the rest.)

doinkdom -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/4/2008 1:35:16 PM)

you can do quite a bit for free...but the whole linking to others who may have inputted information is pricey imo.

I won't be joining...just not gonna budget that much per month, but I will fill out as much as I can when I get everything and you can apparently print it all out in some organized manner which will help keep it all straight.

Roberta_ -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/4/2008 2:58:50 PM)

When I was searching for my birth-family, Ancestry.com was recommended. I went there and made the mistake of giving them my e-mail address. It took FOREVER to get them to stop sending me mail. [:@]

I didn't use them anyway because of the money. That and most adoption triad registries are free or a small charge.

lexie -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/5/2008 10:47:40 AM)

That's too bad Roberta, I never had a problem with them sending a lot of mail (I signed up for the free trial when I was helping my mom.)

There's also a lot of forums around for that stuff. GenForums is one, they are free and people can go on and post about who they are looking for, and then others can answer. My mom was on one and found someone asking about her mothers side of the family, so she was able to help them out.

"Peter, I know that some Scots don't like to be called Brits (and that is totally fine with me). How do you feel about that? (might as well jump in the deep end!)"

I have no problem with being called a Brit, I am Scottish yes, but British thru and thru!

MamaMilty -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/6/2008 7:23:29 PM)

Okay, okay...had to stop lurking and jump on in with my fellow yanks. [;)]

I thought of this thread today when I was at the grocery store. The European Foods section had a big hand written signed that said, Attention Shoppers! European food dates read DAY/MONTH/YEAR. And I just wished I had Manda or Aga standing right there so I could hear their comments!

....And um....sorry Lexie, we Americans want to claim you, too.

Well of course they do - it would be rather silly to have them any other way!! [:D][;)]

Canada is part of North America, so that would make you more American than British. [;)]

Mrs.X -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/6/2008 11:21:29 PM)

What, you have a European foods aisle?!?!? What part of the country do you live in? Do they have shepherd's pie seasoning in a packet? If they do and it has a British flag on it, you should so get it! That stuff is great, and I can't find it anywhere anymore. I forgot the brand. Humf! I wish my store had a European aisle! We have an Asian aisle and Mexican aisle.

Roberta_ -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/6/2008 11:28:16 PM)

I don't think we have a European isle either.

Mrs.X -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/6/2008 11:34:32 PM)

When I was in the Bay Area, Roberta our Albertsons and Safeways all had Asian and Mexican aisles, but no European aisle. But, at least there was a Brit market where I could get sweets, tea and shepherd's pie seasoning. All the "international food market"s up here are mostly middle eastern or Russian.

Roberta_ -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/6/2008 11:51:15 PM)

Stina- where was the Brit Market?

Mrs.X -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/7/2008 12:32:01 AM)

San Carlos on El Camino. If you ever make it to that side sometime, you should definetely check it out....they have all kinds of tasty desserts and stuff and fancy imported teas.

Roberta_ -> RE: Question from a Brit to any Y... umm American (12/7/2008 12:43:04 AM)

That is quite a ways from me. Just after I got saved, sometime around '94, I helped plan a mother-daughter tea at church. It was a British theme and none of us knew what a scone was. We did find a lady in the church who said she knew what they were and made some. I wasn't impressed. [:'(]

It would've helped if we had a market like that near by.

Later I was flying first class and they served us scones. I'm not sure if I liked those better because they really were better or if I was just starving so anything would've tasted good! [:D]
