ORIGINAL: doinkdom I always thought the english accents made the words being sung more clearly audible. Have I ever told you what a wonderful person you are? aw... I know I never had a problem understanding Bowie, the Beatles, The Who or Mick Jagger. But play any kind of American country music and it all sounds like they're singing with biscuits in their mouths. apolgies for any country fans out there.

You don't have to apologize for the truth, doink! One reason we sound more similar when we sing is because we're taught to sing differently than we're taught to pronounce words. In America, serious choirs mimic the King's College Choir.

I didn't say we were doing it correctly! But that's how we're admonished! In the south, we're allowed to chew our diphthongs and drawl consonants. In choirs, we're to hold out the first part of a diphthong and tag the last vowel sound on like a consonant. In choirs, we're also taught to hit a consonant quickly and move on to the vowel and not draw them out.

I'll have you know that my diphthong is washed in the machine along with all my other undergarments...

ORIGINAL: Kath I am remembering Herman's Hermits. He had an accent even when he sang, but I wonder if it was sort of 'put on'. He was so cute though. "Put on"?? They were from Manchester. Mancs have a Manc accent - they don't put it on! (of all the accents someone might put on, I don't think Manc is one of them, lol)

I only know what they are from singing and studying other languages. In the south, we call them syllables!

So, over there a pint is 20oz., huh? Our pints are 16oz. unless you go to an Irish style pub, then the beer comes in a 20oz. glass.

That may explain why my recipes don't always "turn out."

You think we sound like Canucks when we sing? English, Welsh, Scots, Northern Irish?? I don't think so! Well you don't sound like you do when you talk! (Actually, there's a lot of French singers here that the same thing happens to them, Celine Dion is the only one I've heard keep her French accent while singing.)

I've got an old episode of 'Dempsey and Makepeace' on. Don't know if anyone has seen it but it's a cop show. He's an American in London and she's a Brit and they're partners in the Force. He asks 'What's haggis?' 'It's offal' 'I don't want to know what it tastes like, what is it?' 'It's offal' Sighs

I Herman's Hermits Peter performed here a couple of years ago during the Lowcountry Fair - It was awesome! He's still so cute! Course, I still think David McCallum is awfully handsome (Ducky on NCIS). I loved him in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Sapphire & Steel. so, what were we talking about? oh yeah...accents while singing. I think the funniest were during the early British Punk years (late 70's-early 80's). In interviews, nobody knew what they were saying.
