THIS is a cool little site for anyone that's interested (Roberta) in looking up places to stay, that are not hotels, in Scotland...

Staying in a B&B is good, but we LOVED this small hotel near Glencoe.

Isles of Glencoe Hotel

And yes, it really is as quiet and remote as it looks.

We 'saw' Glencoe from the Isle Ferry over to Mull. I wanted to visit the site but there wasn't time that day and we didn't end up going back to Oban.

So just wondering if any of the Brits or Americans say "me" as in "I can't find me bag" or "I'll go ask me mum". Some Aussies use it (including my husband at times) its more of the "country bumpkin" sort of way of speaking, speaking lazily.

Another thing I found out the other day when I said to someone "How are you going?" she said "Don't you mean how am I doing?" Here in Australia almost everyone says "going" not "doing".

LOL about "correctly" pronouncing it "kabob." Reminds me of when I hear Americans butchering french words!

Nicole - I use the word "me" that way as well, but that's from me lazily picking it up from Dh!

So I was reminded this afternoon of when I was in university and dating a British exchange student. We were hanging out one night and I had an early class the next morning, so as I said I was leaving he offered to "knock me up in the morning." Talk about using words in completely different ways!

Manda ~ I watched Filth. It was kinda sad is some respects. Funny in others. I couldn't stand the Hugh Greene though. She was an incredible lady to take such a stand though. For those from other parts of the world, Filth was about Mary Whitehouse who was greatly involved in trying to keep tv 'clean'.

Can't say that I do.

I tend to say 'How are you?'

I have heard that Australians will say 'Jane and I' regardless of whether it should be 'Jane and I' or 'Jane and me'

We use the word in different ways too! To wake up and to become pregnant.

Oh surely not?!

Can't imagine that for a second!!

You mean like saying "walla" or "whalla" for "Voila!"

(sorry for the missed accent - my keypad doesn't have 'em)

I love the French language and that one in particular makes me cringe. There's more, I know, I will have to have a think of the ones I've heard.

I forgot to record it! So I will just have to hope they repeat it sometime.

Brings to mind an old limerick:

There once was a lady from Bude
Who went for a swim in the nude;
She swam round the lighthouse
And met Mary Whitehouse
Who said "Put your clothes on, that's rude!"

Regarding the "me mum" and "me coat", I personally don't but my husband, who is from the North of England does - but it's more "mi" (short i). Eg "Where's mi coat?"

quote:

Are you really surprised?

Blooming convicts.

I'm sure they'll put it on again. It was really funny, as I was channel hopping later, I caught a bit of 'Educating Rita' ~ and she looked soooo young (Julie Walters).

Not all Americans. My dear Joel was pracitcally fluent in French when he was in high school...and still retains the ability to pronounce words from that language properly.

I find that endearing!

Did any of you Brits watch the tv show 'Shameless'?

LOL...it seemed a bit 'low class' when I saw a bit of it...but it does have one of my favorite actors in it (James McAvoy).

I saw a trailer for the first programme, which had a family sitting round a table eating. Only one member was hiding under the table, and the implication was that they were giving oral sex to someone at the table. That permanently put me off the whole programme.

BTW Kim...there's always exceptions to the rule! Your husband just happens to be the only exception to this one

I used to live in Ottawa which is bilingual. You could always tell the tourists by the way the pronounced things. I learned just how much the French really can't stand the English (and I told someone off in French once for talking about us "stupid English" in French.)

I spent 3 months in Paris when I was a 19 yr old student, living with a French family (the father was a colleague of my father's). It was great because I was not allowed to speak English at all with the family; I also attended a college in the daytime to study French literature.

My French came on from strength to strength, though especially in terms of French "slang" (which my London college tutors weren't happy about afterwards!!). I knew I had really "arrived" when

(a) I started to dream in French
(b) A blind man, to whom I got chatting one day, thought I was French

Of course the French hate the English - we won the war and they surrendered! And of course then there was the whole Napoleon thing - and further back, the William The Conqueror thing. There's a mutual kind of love-hate thing that goes on between our two nations, and I don't mind it at all!
The French arrogance makes me smile.

And you should hear how my cousin (lives in Nancee FR) talk about the French spoken in Ottowa, Quebec, etc. He says it is a dialect from 300 years ago.

Doesn't that make the French-speaking Canadians better at speaking French than those in France? How's that for logic?

That's funny Dave! I always thought the French would be made that the Quebecers butchered the language, the way the British are mad at the Americans (and some Canadians )

I think that would mean that the Quebecers have done a better job at preserving the language (don't tell them that though!)

So that means that it is just after supper for you?

Please clarify another rumor for me.... I've heard that most European countries eat their supper much later than most Americans do. Of course Americans of today eat supper anywhere between 5-10 pm, with most probably eating between 6-7 pm.

Also, I've heard that Americans are in the minority by using am and pm for time. It is my understanding that most countries use what we call military time?

hm.... I thought the UK was bigger than that.
