yes, you call them fries, we and the brits call them chips. although they are more thicker than fries, fries are what you get when you go to Macca's or other take away stores. Chips are better (and less fattening!!)

Oh yeah, we call the bigger fries "potato wedges" or "steak fries". But, when we order fried fish and french fries, we call it fish & chips too. But, our regular chips are like Doritoes or Lays.

I'm probably one of the few Americans who will admit to not liking those thin fries like you get at McDs. I like homestyle or steak fries dipped in sour cream.

Mmmmmm...steak fries (chips)! Ah...and what we call chips they call 'crisps' over there across the pond. You Brits have some very odd flavor crisps...ketchup flavored and Worcestershire Sauce flavored...interesting to say the least!

Teaspoon- yes crisps are potato chips, but most people just say "chips" and we know what one another means. Kim- don't you have funny flavoured crisps over there? I don't know they make the tomato sauce (ketchup) ones here anymore though.

If you don't mind, Manda, I had a question, too. There are these delicious crisps made from whole grain sold over here in the States called Sun Chips. Would they carry the same title in England, or would they be called "Sun Crisps" instead?

I had a friend growing up whose mum worked at M&S and she would always bring home Roast Chicken chips for us (long before Lay's and everyone else started making them). My mom always calls fries "chips" and whenever she would go to McDonalds in the drive thru and order her meal with chips the people that worked there would get confused. "Umm...we don't sell chips, we only have fries."
