I am already counting the medals we're not going to win! Some years I think we're going to end up with negative medals! I agree with you Manda, this is the first year I haven't been excited about the Olympics. I still really want to watch the sports, but I just can't get past the fact that China got them.

Lexie- one thing that Nicole said to me, and I hadn't thought of is that whilst people can object to China and what they are doing, we can't really punish the athletes who have trained for so long, worked so hard to be a part in the Olympics. So if we all stopped watching, its like we are turning our backs on them. So I will watch, because I want to support the people who have worked hard to get where they are, not to support the country.

Nicole - I fully agree with that actually, we can't punish these athletes, they had nothing to do with it being there. But it's still hard to watch knowing what's going on over there. And Manda, you're right. Seeing all of the pictures of the athletes showing up wearing masks. I can't handle the Toronto smog some days I can't imagine what it is like there.

Speaking of smog, do ya'll have to get your cars tested for it's pollution output? Here in Oregon it's call emittions or DEQ which I forgot what that stood for. California, they call it smog. In the county I live in, we don't have to do it because we are considered rural, but the more populous counties have to pass it.

Cars here over 3 years old have to have annual MOT Tests. (MOT stands for Ministry of Transport) All kinds of things on the cars get checked and tested - and that includes emissions.

Our old van didn't pass when we lived in a populated area, so we sold it to someone in a rural area since we knew it would cost too much to fix it. I think all cars newer than 30 years old have to pass DEQ here in Oregon. I'm wondering if China has something in place like that. With all the smog there, you wouldn't think so.

LOL Christina, no you wouldn't think China have something like that in place, although because there are so many vehicles on the road I think it wouldn't matter really. Only certain states have a test like that, it has to be passed by the police before they let you drive the car. We don't have it in my state, but I don't think Australia in general has a smog problem, not that I have seen anyway.

We get a better quality of care here, imo, because of the competition (i.e. doctors needing to please their patients because if they don't they'll lose the income) as opposed to it being gov't. run and the doctors getting paid no matter what...do you see my meaning here? I can phone my psychiatrist anytime that I need to speak to him, and if necessary, can get an appointment to see him (he's booked appointments for me in his lunch hour before now). My doctor doesn't work full time, but I know that I can speak with her on the phone/by appointment whenever necessary. I had to have a mammogram a couple of years ago and my appointment came through within a couple of weeks (that's from referal to my seeing someone). My dentist, I see eveyr 6 months and he's done some major work on my teeth (replacement of a crown, then a bridge and a replacement when I broke it) and it's been brilliant. And the surgeon who helped develop endometrial ablations was the one who performed mine (at the time I posted about it in forums and no one had heard of it). Oh, and I use the same pharmacist. She does a yearly check to look at any problems that I have with my medication (one came up with my inhaler that I hadn't thought of when I saw the asthma nurse). Not so sure how that would fare, but I call it good going... quote:
Nicole - I fully agree with that actually, we can't punish these athletes, they had nothing to do with it being there. Didn't stop many countries boycotting the Russia/Moscow Olympics in 1980. It isn't a punishment of the athletes. It is a stance. Personally, I think it would have been wonderful if more of the athletes had kicked up a fuss about it. Manda, did you see any of the Paul Merton series when he went to China. Some of it was really funny, but he did go to Beijing and talked about the number of people that would have to be moved so the stadium and everything could be built. Was very sad. Even sadder is the fact that it's being said no one is going to be able to afford to live in the Olympic village afterwards. Perhaps in future years, there needs to be less emphasis on how pretty they can make everything and focus on the impact it's going to have on the community ~ before, during and after it's built.

It seems that the Chinese government have just railroaded through in order to get what they want and make themselves look good. I couldn't get excited by the opening ceremony at all, because all I could think of was so many of their own countrymen living in poverty (I was thinking especially of the earthquake victims here).

I was thinking especially of the earthquake victims here Yep. I had mixed feelings about the little boy who'd been hauled from the rubble and was 'paraded' in the ceremony. And while I agree with you about the pollution levels there, the competitors knew it was going to be bad, and they made their choice. I don't wish ill health on any of them, but it has been their decision. What do you all think about this super-duper swimsuit that a lot of the competitors are wearing? Is it permitted cheating that should be banned, or is it fine for them to wear (if they can get into it!).

In rural areas, we don't have to worry about the smog too much because there isn't enough of us driving to cause a lot like in populated areas. Plus, I think the Dept. of Environmental Quality realizes that many people in rural areas can't afford better cars, and that we really don't drive as much as city folk. I probably drive 2-5 miles per week.

Even though it looks painted on, it covers more skin, so that's nice. Little more modest, not that the others were immodest though.

This is the first I've heard of any special kind of swimsuits.

The "controversy" is that it causes the swimmer to be more boyant (sp?) allowing them to cut throught the water faster. I didn't heard that they caused the swimmer to be more boyant, but I did hear that they compressed the swimmers body (oh boy, I could do with that!) to reduce drag. Interesting that the article mentions Michael Phelps but he didn't wear it for his first medal.
