Yes, but doesn't technology come into every aspect of sport now? Ever seen Chariots of Fire? Film was a new thing then and I'll bet not every competitor was able to see rivals performance on film, certainly not to the extent they are now. Look at tennis and how rackets have changed over the years. And track shoes. These swimming costumes, as with the rackets and track shoes and bikes ~ goodness knows what other changes ~ are new technology, yes. Cheating? Well they're available to everyone and have been accepted (and it's pretty obvious when they're being worn) so while some may not like them, they're not cheating. It will be interesting to see if Phelps wears his in any of his races. quote:
but what do you expect of the IOC...they did pick Berlin when Hitler was in power...ugh! Ummm... no they didn't. Germany won the bid in 1931. Hitler didn't come to power until 1933. As for the 1936 games. You may want to check out Lutz (Luz) Long who's advice to Jesse Owens cost him a silver medal. Probably wouldn't have gone down with Hitler that a German was giving advice to an American ~ and a black American at that!

Well these new suits must be doing something! In the 4x100m freestyle, the Canadians placed 6th...and they beat the previous world record! Imagine that many teams breaking the world record all at once! I'm still upset about the Olympics being in Beijing because Toronto was in the running for them! Though there was a massive explosion here yesterday so maybe it was for the better.

Explosion in Toronto? What happened? I did not get to check out any news yesterday because my wife is extremely ill.

A propane facility exploded here yesterday. A large portion of the west end of the city was closed off and services shut down. One employee of the plant is missing, a firefighter died (it sounds that his death wasn't caused by the explosion or fire but something else that happened to occur while he was on scene.) 12,000 residents were evacuated, and 3000 still haven't been allowed to go home.

Lexie, I'm sorry about the explosion. It sounds as though there could have been a lot more loss of life than there was. Just watching the swimming highlights. You know, the really nice things about the Brits is that because we win so few medals, we are really happy when we win one ~ or two. Katie Hoff lost out on gold (400m freestyle), but came away with silver and she wasn't impressed. Does she not realise how incredible she is to have come away with silver at the Olympics?

I'll bet it was great seeing two Brits coming away with the Gold & Bronze! It was an exciting race, so close at the end ~ and they were so sweet about it. I'm looking forward to the eventing tomorrow. The cross country really shook the field up last night. I'm also looking forward to watching Chris Hoy (cyclist), though I'm still trying to get my head round 1 of the new events he's in.

Lexie, I'm sorry about the explosion. It sounds as though there could have been a lot more loss of life than there was. It occurred at 3:30 am which is what saved most people. If it had occurred when people were outside there would have been a lot more loss of life. Apparently parked cars nearby were starting to melt. quote:
Question ~ why are there so many houses that don't have an 'upstairs'? As in why are there so many bungalows over here? Here's my question - do most Brits have their washers and dryers in their kitchens?

ORIGINAL: lexie Here's my question - do most Brits have their washers and dryers in their kitchens? I do; where we used to live we had a little utility room just off the kitchen, which housed the washing machine, dryer and freezer. I preferred that, but our current house doesn't have a utility room, so the washing machine and dryer are in the kitchen, and the freezer is in the garage.

Most places here (well, most places with hook-ups) have a little utility room or the hook-up is in the garage. I don't think I've ever seen a hook-up in a kitchen before. Is your kitchen really big?

What's a hook-up? And no, generally speaking, British kitchens aren't that big. Mine is reasonable, at 13ft x 13ft; at our first house it was 26ft x 9ft, a long "galley" at the back of the house (which used to be a small milking parlour!), which I much preferred as we had more space.

I have a question... Do all Americans say "basil" like "bay-sil". It just sounds so annoying to hear it that way, I was watching some American chef and she kept saying it that way and so do someone else on the show. We say it "basil" with a soft "a" as in "apple". My sister and I sometimes like to say it in a shrill, annoying screech "bbbasssiiilll!" like Mrs Fawlty on Fawlty Towers

I would love to have my laundry machines in the kitchen. For some reason, I like the look of it. Though my first preference is to have it upstairs so I don't have to carry laundry up and down stairs. How are the Olympics being shown where everyone is? I know that NBC is showing it in the US, and they seem to have a lot of coverage (found that out when I want to watch Leno last night). But I find their coverage is usually only of events the Americans are in. CBC shows it here from 6am to 12pm and again 6pm to 12am.

Manda, a hook-up is for the washer. It's a faucet type thing you hook up to your washer and also a hole in the wall that you put the washers drain hose into. A dryer hook-up is a hole your put the dryer's vent hose into so it vents outside. Some places have hoses already that you just hook your machines up to, but when we moved here, we had to buy some hoses to go in the holes. Nicole, yes all Americans say bay-sil LOL! The first time I heard ba-sil, it was Curtis The Take Home Chef who is British. It would make more sense and follow English rules better the way ya'll pronounce it since a vowel follows the first consanant after it. I suppose that's not really a rule though, there really are no rules in English that aren't broken with some word.

Nicole, yes all Americans say bay-sil LOL! That's funny - I alternate between the two, so does Dh. I guess that's what happens when you grow up between hearing two different versions of English (my grandmother used a lot of British pronounciations, and passed it on to my mom and Dh's English is a mixture of British and Canadian.)
