That's funny - I alternate between the two, so does Dh. I guess that's what happens when you grow up between hearing two different versions of English (my grandmother used a lot of British pronounciations, and passed it on to my mom and Dh's English is a mixture of British and Canadian.)

What about Oregano?

Please don't tell me you say O-REGGERNO and instead say it the proper Italian way ORREGARNO?

basil is bassle?

hmm...who knew?

I have a small room between my kitchen and garage that serves as home to my washer/dryer. There are shelves above the washer/dryer where I keep most of my canned goods and other products.

My kitchen is pretty small, too - very long with a small area for a table and 2 chairs at the end.

I had to have a CTScan done this morning and for some reason, I had a moment of smiling thinking about the health care conversation that was going on in here the past few days. (My insurance deductable had not been met, so my portion of today's fee was substantial in my eyes.)

so I could dazzle my spaghetti sauce with some basil?

I like the sound of that, so I may have to change the way I pronounce it.

Ore-genno....that's how Americans say it.

In case anyone wondered Oregon is not Ore-GONE, it's Origin, with a hard G obviously. And, it doesn't matter where anyone is from, it always must be said Origin. When John Kerry was running for pres, I think someone must have corrected him because he started saying it the right way after a while. Same thing goes for Nevada....it's Nevah-dah.

Wow, I had NO idea that Oregon was pronounced Origin...and I think Oregon is one of the most beautiful states we have.

I've always made it 3 syllables, Or-short e-gun

wow...

Actually it's not...I've seen lots of events that no Americans are competing in (basketball, tennis, swimming, soccer, rowing, handball, boxing)...virtually the entire Olympics are being shown here even if an American isn't competing.

That's how it is pronounced...Ore-gun (not Ore-gone)...it's not pronounced Ore-gin, lol...that's the word for the beginning of something...like in Darwin's Origin of the Species!

But I find their coverage is usually only of events the Americans are in. Now why doesn't that suprise me? I know our presenters are biased and will keep running something if a Brit is in an event (like the badminton today) so changing the programme, but we do show events we're not in.

I think you were talking about NBC coverage?
I figured most countries would do this. Ya know, national pride and all that. I know NBC is broadcasting for 5 hours at night showing "LIVE" events.

It bothers me that I can't see some of the events I like. (I don't have cable or sattelite). I'm missing the equestrian events and weight lifting.

I do love it when a Brit wins but I love watching many of the sports. I will say though that the attitude of some of the competitors leaves a lot to be desired.

Are you speaking about the American Silver medalist Katie Hoff?? I think she could have been more gracious. But I have also seen other competetors from other countries who were also less than gracious aobut not receiving a medal or loosing in a preleminary round.

But - I loved the enthuasism the Mens Gymnastic team showed in wining the Bronze!

Well, I did say "hard G" not gin as in gin & tonic. So, it is Oregun, or Oregin with a hard G. But, certainly not Ore-Gone.

I possibly was (it was yesterday!). I think the attitude of the Brit in the rifle final was awesome. Didn't watch it, but apparently he was in a good position but missed the last 2 shots so didn't get any medals at all. He was interviewed afterwards and was pretty upbeat about it ~ and turned to his partner and baby son and said 'They're my gold medals.'

Awwwww

Yes, but doesn't technology come into every aspect of sport now? Ever seen Chariots of Fire? Film was a new thing then and I'll bet not every competitor was able to see rivals performance on film, certainly not to the extent they are now.

Of course I've seen Chariots of Fire. It's one of my favorite films! But watching a rivals performance on film doesn't give that person an actual physical advantage like the new suits do...but that's just my opinion...

I have a question...

Do all Americans say "basil" like "bay-sil". It just sounds so annoying to hear it that way, I was watching some American chef and she kept saying it that way and so do someone else on the show.

Why is that annoying to you? It doesn't annoy me to hear Aussies, or Brits, or Canadians say "Bazzil". It's just the way you say it...why should someone's accent or dialect be considered 'wrong or annoying'? Now, that sentiment I find annoying...

I've never heard anyone either from Oregon or not pronounce that state as Ore-gin. Maybe you mean Ore-gen (ryhmes with again)... Or maybe I'm just being thrown by your example, lol!

That's because we say it the right way! It's when things are said the correct way that they don't sound annoying!

But any of the competitors can wear the new suits. And, as someone else said, most are wearing them. I suspect that if they're not, it's because it's their choice.

In the 1972 Olympics the first Ugandan to win a gold (actually, the only one) wore running shoes that were 2 years old. I'm pretty sure that no one else in track events wore shoes that old ~ oh and not only did he win gold, he broke the record too.

If there was 1 swimmer who had the opportunity to wear the new suit in their event and won and smashed the record etc, then perhaps it would be unfair ~ but that's not the case is it?

My grammar is very poor (IMO) but I do work at it and take pains to make sure things are right (setting aside typo's). It does frustrate me when I see errors in places that shouldn't have them ~ I've complained to the BBC before now!
