I think you told me about that....I use csvu.net to get updates and read ahead (find out what is currently happening in the UK) but I like the Sun because it has stories about what is going to happen in the coming weeks which csvu doesn't...and because they do funny stories....like how they showed up at a pub in Manchester to film a scene and Johnny Briggs (Mike Baldwin) was there....turns out it was his local. He asked to be in the background while they shot the scene but they said no. Would have been funny!

Thing is, lexie, with The Sun you can never be quite sure it's actually true. That's one of the main reasons I avoid it.

Yep! Bless him ~ not to mention bringing, what was it 'wing wang' home! The funny thing was, on (I think C$ news) they showed the mayor of Beijing with a twisted flag and did a 'Not up to Chinese perfection' and then a clip of Boris after he'd untwisted the flag, saying he didn't have a problem!

Ken must be spitting over not being mayor right now and for 2012. Wonder who'll be PM?

Boris actually said "Bringing ping pong home!"

<hopes David Cameron will be PM for 2012>

How random was it to have Leona Lewis singing while Jimmy Page was playing?!! I didn't even know who he was until my dh told me.

Sadly, I knew who he was but not her....

I did like the Red Arrows fly-over, even though it didn't do much for the environment. I'd love for them to have a bigger role in the opening ceremony somehow.

Now if Cameron was pm, that would upset Brown, and probably Blair too! Blair would blame Brown though for losing them the election!

Why is French the official language of the Olympics when the first games were in Greece? Shouldn't it be Greek?

Boris actually said "Bringing ping pong home!"

Yeah, but he also said that we invented 'ping pong' and that it had originally been called 'whif whaf'!

quote:

When the game first started it was called by a number of different names. “Whif whaf,” “gossamer,” and “flim flam” were commonly used to describe it. The words, as can be assumed, were derived from the sound that the ball made when hit back and forth on the table. In 1901 though, English manufacturer J. Jaques & Son Ltd registered one of the more popular names, Ping-Pong, as a copyright. He later sold the trademark to the Parker Brothers in the United States. Then in the 1920's the name and the sport were revived in Europe as table tennis.

http://iml.jou.ufl.edu/projects/Fall04/Baksh/history.html

He went on, muttering about how the French could see a dining table and see it only as a place to eat (couldn't help wondering if that was a light-hearted dig at the French for not getting the Olympics) whereas the Brits saw a dining table and saw it not only as a place to eat, but somewhere to play a game too!

I think its because French is spoken throughout Europe, Canada and its an official language in some african countries as well. That's quite a bit. A lot of our Middle Eastern people speak french as well.

Oh my dear, sweet, British sisters in the Lord (did I butter you up enough? )

I need help! I have a bit part in The Gospel of Scrooge and I have to use a British accent. I don't want it to sound corny. Any suggestions?

OK folks (rolls up sleeves)I'm ready to get back into the swing of debate having returned from a lovely 'summer' holiday on the Welsh coast. A memorable week sitting on the sand, battling the wind and rain whilst feeding my kids gritty sandwiches - aaaaah. Seriously - we had a great time in the rock pools and the weather didn't bother the children at all. Wales is beautiful - but not as nice as Cornwall (I'm biased - I grew up in Devon and Cornwall).

There - now I've done my bit for British Tourism.

So, lets just say I get a very large bonus this year - where in the US should I visit? Anywhere off the beaten track appeals to me.

That's true...but they're still funny stories! I started out reading the news (for the reason above) but our Sun, while not as dirty, is the same way, you don't know how much you can trust the journalism.

I couldn't hear her at all. Interesting how Michael Phelps was in London instead of the ceremonies.

I was surprised too.

don't you mean the heat? I never complain about the cold, cause it doesn't really get that cold here - we have one week of winter and that's usually in late January.

No, the cold. I was in Florida one year at Christmas and it was in the high 50's, low 60's during the days. People were bundled up like the next ice age was coming. On the news they were telling people how to protect their plants from frost, it honestly seemed like the world was ending depending on what channel you watched. Everywhere we went people were complaining it was so cold.....and I was in shorts and a t-shirt. I had just come from -30 and a foot of snow. I could only laugh when I hear the complaints of the cold.

But I do know it's all relative and it's cold to those people. You just would love to transplant them to where you are from and watch them struggle to survive

I have decided to never complain that it's too hot during the summer, because come winter all I will be doing is complaining that it's too cold.

Oh ok! Being from FL, I know what you mean now.

I've always said that God loves me too much to move me to the snow.

Can we hold you to that?

There's always something to complain about... even an optimist can find a thing of two.

Nice to know The Sun is good for something! Their advertising is way too funny (sorry Nicole, I'd probably not have seen it if you hadn't mentioned it!). Manda, for once, they got the story right (well, at least the medal count!).

Lexie ~ Bolt's cousin lives about 40 miles away from me! I watched 'Cool Runnings' this afternoon ~ have you seen it? It's about the Jamaican bobsled team from 1988, but it's very fictional, which is a disappointment. I suspect I will be watching out for them in 2010!

quote:

Yeah. He's never been to London before so I suspect he wasn't really sure what to expect. He said he'd never seen anything like the Red Arrows flyover before. Poor boy, he must have lead a sheltered life or the Americans can't fly good! I noticed that he's announced he's going to retire after 2012.

quote:

I didn't see what he was doing there.
Nor me, but then I wasn't too sure why Beckham has anything to do with the Olympics either... I guess it could have been worse, it could have been his wife!

quote:

did I butter you up enough?
No!

quote:

My line is that due to my hypothyroidism, I don't do extremes of temperature.

Rumour has it that just about the whole world want the British (who is British) team cycle trainer! Rumour also has it, he doesn't want to go anywhere. If he does, I suspect he's could name his price.

Was interesting to hear that in future Olympians (British) may be given cash incentives for winning a medal, as they do in the US. Not sure I agree with it.

I had a look - that's classic!!
Do you think they really ran that vehicle in Sydney as well as in London?

My daughter watched that and loved it!

But then if there'd been the slightest breeze, they'd have had to nail her down!

Yep, mine too. And how.

I looked it up on Wikipedia and it was total fiction! I'm so disappointed. I know sometimes they take some artistic licence, but I don't think they did in this case.

Why bother... she could have just flown off into the sky...

If they did, I wonder if they got any rotten eggs thrown at it (although I suspect that could have happened in London too!).

Actually, you can hold me to that! I never complain in the summer (unless it rains too much like this one), I love the heat!

I have seen Cool Runnings numerous times....Dh refuses to watch it. He assumes it's full of Jamaican stereotypes (which it is) and doesn't want to see it. But I'll get him to watch it eventually. That's cool about Bolt's cousin! I'm trying to get Dh to find out if there were any Powell's in his family...they have the same eyes!!! LOL!

One of the bobsledders from the 88 Jamaican team still bobsleds for Canada.
