(Little Britain USA)

I was so excited! Until I found out that the channel that is showing it here, is a subscription one....I guess I'll just get it on dvd like how I watched all the other seasons.

quote:

Sounds to me like you may well have not watched enough to see enough of what Little Britain is about; like you've only seen 2 or 3 of the skits.

When I was reading American reviews of the new season, I was wondering if the reviewers only watched the Americanised one and haven't seen the evolution of the show and the characters. There are definitely some offensive characters and skits, but on a whole, week to week, it's a great and funny show. (nobutyeahbutnobutyeah)

It starts here in the UK on Friday on BBC1 - so you may find that some clips find their way onto YouTube.

Thanks Manda!

I'm pretty annoyed that they are showing it on the subscription channel here (Canadian HBO essentially) because they showed all of the British episodes on a cable channel.

Agapetos, did you like going to boarding school...seems like it's always dipicted in movies as a bad place to be.
I'm trying to think what movies... which have you seen?

Did I like boarding school? I have mixed feelings about it. It was probably best for me that I went and stayed in 1 school rather than end up going to 3, which is what would have happened if I'd gone to day school. It had it's good points and bad points.

Can't really think of any, but I remember threats from parents "If you don't _____, then it's off to boaring school" or something like that. Cartoons too. I suppose getting switched from a co-ed public day school to an all girls boarding school would be quite a shock, but if you were there from 1st-12th, you would be used to it.

That's not really depicting boarding school as a bad place, just somewhere to send children because the parents can't be bothered to take care of children (who were generally just being children and had done nothing wrong). Kind of like when mother's used to say 'Just wait 'till your father gets home.' Father's weren't bad, but they could easily be depicted that way from what was said.

I was state educated until I was 11.

Manda - I didn't see Jonathan Ross - but I can imagine!

It is a shame that the tabloids and a lot of the reviews I have seen do seem to have focused on the most offensive aspects of the show. I might give it another go (I'll have to watch it on iplayer because we don't have TV).

Ok I have a question....

What is this "it's not just for Christmas" line? Where is it from?

I'm watching Coronation Street and we are extremely behind real time (it's Christmas here right now) and there is a sign in the taxi office saying "A cab ride is not just for Christmas" (or something like that). And it reminded me of a line from Ab Fab where Bubbles said "but it's not just for Christmas" in reference to her dog. What are they poking fun at?

A dog is for life, not just for Christmas

It was a 1978 advertising campaign, started because of the large number of puppies abandoned in the weeks following Christmas, where people had bought the puppy as a gift without really thinking about what it would involve, and then getting rid of it when the novelty wore off.

Christians got on this bandwagon too, and there was a spate of car stickers saying "Jesus is for life, not just for Christmas" too!

Makes me proud to be British!! Stiff upper lip and all that!!

"Gardener's severed arm saved by frozen sausage rolls"

quote:

"He then calmly walked to the home of his neighbour Steve Francis, knocked on the door and said to him: "Please help, I've cut off my arm.........................
But through it all he sat there talking away like it was normal. He's a brave man, I'll give him that. I couldn't believe he didn't faint."

And if the guy was Canadian he would have said "I'm sorry, but I've cut my arm off."

Thanks for the explanation on the Christmas thing Manda!

I have told me doctors that 'Lithium is for life, not just for Christmas' before now!

I read 'Autobiography of a Supertramp' when I was taking my O Level English Literature and he described when he lost his food ~ run over by a train. While waiting for help, he took out his pipe and started smoking as there was nothing else he could do and it confused those who were with him!

I did.... I have to confess, my favourite bit was the bit at the very end ~ the 'Having seen America....' and so on.... it was worth watching just for that!

Yeah, what a bummer. I clicked on the link on that website though and it said they are working on an international iPlayer. So, yay.

Yes, being able to watch BBC programmes on IPlayer is wonderful. Hopefully it will be available internationally soon.

I have a question...

Is Life On Mars still showing? I just saw what I assume is the first season of it and wondered if they did additional seasons?

From I can find out, Ashes to Ashes is a sequel to Life On Mars (which had 2 seasons as far as I can tell). But nothing else scheduled to air over here. bummer...

The original Eleventh Hour with Patrick Stewart is an all day marathon next weekend. It has been remade for American tv as a show this fall that premieres this Thursday...interesting

Anyways...got my fill of the telly this past weekend, so everything is being recorded for a while and I'll catch up then.
