Aga- if you like I'll bring over my computer repair kit and fix it for you. The kit contains a hammer for laptops and a sledge hammer for older or larger computers.

How many of you Yanks say "meat" but include in that fish, beans etc or any other kind of protein (as well as meat)? And lexie, do Canucks say that? (I find this rather strange)

Chicken, pork, beef are meat. Fish is fish, and beans are beans. But, they are all in the "meat food group". When I'm talking about a meal I make I'll say it's "A meat, a starch and a veggie" even though the "meat" might be fish.

So effectively you use the word "meat" interchangeably with "protein"?? <scratches head> (just LOVE that sentence "even though the meat might be fish" ROFLOL!!!)

I include fish and poultry in the meat category, because they are the flesh of an animal. I do not include beans, eggs, and other protein sources. If fish and chicken aren't meat, then what are they???

We say meat for chicken, pork, beef. Fish is fish. Everything else goes by it's name. If I'm talking terms of food group categories then they are either all protein or meats are meats and the rest are meat alternatives. I'm not sure how other Canadians do that though. But I find it strange to refer to beans as meat. And fish has always been fish rather than meat. (And in our house chicken is known as "fowl." And yes, we do go to eat at Kentucky Fried Fowl.)

I've always referred to fish as fish. It's a rare occassion that we have fish in our household, even though most of us love it.

No, Stina, it isn't (I live in Canada too). I use the same terms as Lexie.

One time I was in a thread about hockey. We were talking about the Canucks vs. the Wilds. My ex was watching the game. I made a comment that my ex hated what the Canucks were doing to his Wilds. I have always referred to a Canadian as a Canadian. It never occurred to me to call them anything differently. A Canadian who had not been participating in the thread, obviously misunderstood what was going on. He sent me a pm where he jumped all over me for referring to Canadians as Canucks. Are Canadians really offended by that term or was this guy just being a jerk overly sensitive?

Wouldn't bother me, I don't think (I've never been called one but it doesn't raise any ire in me to think I might). It could have to do with the nationality of the person saying it or, with the way this person has had it applied to him in the past by others. Even loving words can be filled with hatred if said in certain ways.

Stina - no it's Kentucky Fried Chicken....in Jamaica they refer to chicken as "fowl" so that's why it's called that in our house. Honestly, I have no clue where the term Canuck even comes from, but I'm not offended by it. (Ok I looked it up...apparently it was once a term used by Americans to describe French Canadians and I guess it wasn't the nicest term. But obviously we Canadians have adopted it as an affectionate term...because otherwise I'm sure the entire province of Quebec would have something to say about the Vancouver Canucks.)
