I have never heard of anything like that before. I have never met anyone he works with, and it seems (from what Chris has told me) that is is mostly older guys and a few women. Has anyone heard of something like that before?

I think it's really uncommon, but dh's work had a baby shower for him when we were expecting Gebre. It was really sweet of them, and he came home with piles of presents and a "#1 dad" medal.

And something that surprised me was that he said he would not do an internal check until about 39 weeks unless I start to have regular contractions ... I like this guy! He really is hands off! Oh and he said that it has been several years since he has had to use any intervention to get the cervix to ripen.

That's awesome, Nicole! Sounds like a keeper!

Oh definitely! He has exceeded all my expectations. It's kinda silly. I'm even more excited now to have the baby because I know I will have a good dr delivering him.

I just went to the bathroom 10 minutes ago and I already have to go again!! This is very annoying. I did just drink 20 oz of water, but still.

Chris got the nursery painted last weekend and he is putting the crib together this weekend. I might buy the changing table this week, and he can put that together too. Then I will post some pics of the nursery!!

so he IS for sure deploying? Well, trust me, a POST deployment pregnancy is easier then a during deployment one.....so I will pray for you.

I don't know what they do for 'routine' u/s in the states though - that's just Canada.

yeah...they may wait for a few weeks. Routine for a 20w here in the US is very intense...usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour and they measure everything from bones to organs and functions and fluid amount, etc. So they may choose to wait til closer to that time to do the u/s

dance....you need to set up a photobucket account, cause you KNOW we will require more then three pics when you have your little one!!!! Very cute pics though!!! You looked radiant in that color too!!!!

yep Sarah. The physical therepy has helped enough that the Army won't let him stay behind. And he's got training keeping him away from the doc till next month, by then it's too late to hold him back. If he needs surgery, it'll have to wait till he gets back.
And the general pooh-pooh'd the idea of a stay-behind band, so he's outa here for sure!
I don't think I'll get pregnant before he leaves. And that's fine. After him being gone last time, I know it'd be far easier when he gets home...so we'll see

Ugh, I suddenly can't remember anything I read.

I was in bed like the doctor ordered... SLEEPING so peacefully. When, all of a sudden, I felt this water tricking down my knee. I pulled out of the dream to discover that I had left a water bottle in bed with me and forgot to tighten the cap. It had been leaking for some time and created a terrible drenched mess. My now bed - that I'm supposed to be laying in - is DRENCHED along with my blankets and pillows.

I have a stuffy nose and sore throat, and it got me thinking ... what if a woman went into labor and she was sick? (Like had a cold sick.) I can't imagine blowing my nose, feeling icky sick *on top of* working on delivering my baby.
Has it happened to any of you? Or to anyone you know?

Oddly, most commonly, your body has a way of 'forgetting' it's illnesses during labor... almost like it knows it doesn't have the time or energy to spend on two physically demanding things at once.

Try doing pelvic rocks throughout the day... most beneficially first thing in the morning and RIGHT before lying down for bed (as in, while ON the bed so you can just flop down afterward). This will get your uterus up and out of your pelvic cavity allowing more room in your bladder.

Question for you natural birth experts: How long can you go after your water breaks until you have the baby?
I ask this because my husband's cousin had a homebirth - her water broke, but she didnt go into labor for 3 days. She and her baby ended up being rushed to the hospital with massive infections. Because of this experience, my husband is very leary of midwives.

This is one of the best and most complete resources available... there are also great links to medical studies on there as well.

For a great story on PROM and a pregnancy that continued with no complication, see here.

Some things to consider:

  • Vaginal exams increase risk of infection after ROM astronomically
  • close (non-vaginal) monitoring of mom and baby decreases the likelihood of infection, even long-term PROM
  • frequent and closely monitored hydration decreases the likelihood of infection, even long-term PROM
  • Regular Sexual activity (in a monogamous relationship) PRE ROM lowers the incidence of infection greatly (semen is antibacterial)
  • GBS status affects infection rates to a small degree

Continuous hydration and careful monitoring with no vaginal exams has shown to be an effective and safe 'treatment' of PROM. Unfortunately, most doctors want to manage the risk themselves by controlling the labor environment and getting the birth 'over with'.

Amniotic fluid is continuously regenerated through oral hydration. Infection will show itself in major indicators long before it becomes life-threatening, giving medical professionals ample time to treat the mom and baby AT THAT TIME, and NBV (nothing by vagina), frequent pad changes, and strict personal hygiene will keep exposure to a minimum. In addition, Vitamin C, acidophylus and garlic by mouth can increase chorion/amnion strength, increase antibody production, increase good bacterium in the vagina, and minimize bad bacteria throughout.

In addition to all of the above, limiting activity GREATLY Post PROM will increase the likelihood that the chorion (and often amnion) will reseal itself, effectively healing the PROM.

There are also a few studies (sorry my books are not in front of me) that support the wait and see approach as having better fetal and maternal outcomes in the long run rather than induction for PROM. These same studies have shown that 72 hours post PROM - with the above STRICT guidelines - infection rates decrease astronomically. I will see if I can find those later today.

My grandmother's example: back in the 1940's, she was being attended by her family doctor. At 25 weeks, a horse kicked her in the stomach and her water broke. He put her on bed rest for a week and then limited housework after that time. She carried to 36 weeks and had my aunt with no complications. Her doctor coined it a 'dry birth' as there was very little amniotic fluid. My aunt was born with lots of bruises, but completely healthy. That is an extreme case and something none of us every occurs to anyone, but still a good example of 'wait and see for health of baby and me' approach.

I do swear I didn't post that with the intention to make you think it was my water that broke! I just wrote it the way I experienced it. LOL

Smootches -- Thank you for that blurb of information. It is very helpful. I have never had my water break on it's own, but I wasn't sure how I would handle this one if they did. I tested GBS positive with my first so I just assumed that if my water breaks I'd have to go in right away even if contractions have not started yet. So I will keep your info in mind.

LOL Janine!

Erin, our Walmart hasn't been stocked very well lately and a lot of things I buy weren't there the other day so I had to go to other stores. I am glad you found your body wash!

I dunno his name. I'll have to ask Justin. He's told me probably a zillion times, but it's just in one ear and out the other with me when it comes to that stuff. LOL
