I just went to the bathroom 10 minutes ago and I already have to go again!! This is very annoying. I did just drink 20 oz of water, but still. Chris got the nursery painted last weekend and he is putting the crib together this weekend. I might buy the changing table this week, and he can put that together too. Then I will post some pics of the nursery!!

ORIGINAL: paulsbride I have a stuffy nose and sore throat, and it got me thinking ... what if a woman went into labor and she was sick? (Like had a cold sick.) I can't imagine blowing my nose, feeling icky sick *on top of* working on delivering my baby. Has it happened to any of you? Or to anyone you know? Oddly, most commonly, your body has a way of 'forgetting' it's illnesses during labor... almost like it knows it doesn't have the time or energy to spend on two physically demanding things at once.

Try doing pelvic rocks throughout the day... most beneficially first thing in the morning and RIGHT before lying down for bed (as in, while ON the bed so you can just flop down afterward). This will get your uterus up and out of your pelvic cavity allowing more room in your bladder.

ORIGINAL: kelbel0066 Question for you natural birth experts: How long can you go after your water breaks until you have the baby? I ask this because my husband's cousin had a homebirth - her water broke, but she didnt go into labor for 3 days. She and her baby ended up being rushed to the hospital with massive infections. Because of this experience, my husband is very leary of midwives. This is one of the best and most complete resources available... there are also great links to medical studies on there as well. For a great story on PROM and a pregnancy that continued with no complication, see here. Some things to consider: - Vaginal exams increase risk of infection after ROM astronomically
- close (non-vaginal) monitoring of mom and baby decreases the likelihood of infection, even long-term PROM
- frequent and closely monitored hydration decreases the likelihood of infection, even long-term PROM
- Regular Sexual activity (in a monogamous relationship) PRE ROM lowers the incidence of infection greatly (semen is antibacterial)
- GBS status affects infection rates to a small degree
Continuous hydration and careful monitoring with no vaginal exams has shown to be an effective and safe 'treatment' of PROM. Unfortunately, most doctors want to manage the risk themselves by controlling the labor environment and getting the birth 'over with'. Amniotic fluid is continuously regenerated through oral hydration. Infection will show itself in major indicators long before it becomes life-threatening, giving medical professionals ample time to treat the mom and baby AT THAT TIME, and NBV (nothing by vagina), frequent pad changes, and strict personal hygiene will keep exposure to a minimum. In addition, Vitamin C, acidophylus and garlic by mouth can increase chorion/amnion strength, increase antibody production, increase good bacterium in the vagina, and minimize bad bacteria throughout. In addition to all of the above, limiting activity GREATLY Post PROM will increase the likelihood that the chorion (and often amnion) will reseal itself, effectively healing the PROM. There are also a few studies (sorry my books are not in front of me) that support the wait and see approach as having better fetal and maternal outcomes in the long run rather than induction for PROM. These same studies have shown that 72 hours post PROM - with the above STRICT guidelines - infection rates decrease astronomically. I will see if I can find those later today. My grandmother's example: back in the 1940's, she was being attended by her family doctor. At 25 weeks, a horse kicked her in the stomach and her water broke. He put her on bed rest for a week and then limited housework after that time. She carried to 36 weeks and had my aunt with no complications. Her doctor coined it a 'dry birth' as there was very little amniotic fluid. My aunt was born with lots of bruises, but completely healthy. That is an extreme case and something none of us every occurs to anyone, but still a good example of 'wait and see for health of baby and me' approach.
