Cell Phones going off in church: A minor annoyance, or a big deal? Has it ever happened at your church? Did the pastor ignore it or not?

If our previous pastor (we are in the midst of finding a new one, the old one retired) said anything it was in a joking manner, but rarely did he draw attention to any disturbance from the congregation at all. It is really not a big deal to me at all if it happens. People forget and it happens so no need to be annoyed by it.

We have several volunteer firefighters and also an on call hospice worker in our church, so not everyone CAN shut their pagers and phones off, and I'm glad they still come to church when they're on call. When one of those goes off, we stop where ever we are in the service and pray.

Our deacons would have prayed for your husband too, Kylie. We've had deacons stop by the house and pray for us when we all had a nasty cold. If you miss church, you can expect at least one phone call, and sometimes more around five, to find out why. It's not nosiness, just people caring for people.

Wow. Well, I'm glad you're cool with it, because I'd probably stop attending a church like that.

Sometimes we don't go to church just because Nathan is napping and we really don't feel like deal with a sleep deprived child. Admittedly we don't always have the best reasons for not attending, but I don't feel like explaining myself to an elder, either.

What about the rest of you ladies? Does your church find out why you didn't show up? Do you like it? Would you like it if they did?

The deacons don't, but our small group leaders and close friends will call. I don't mind, it's nice to know that we are loved, and subsequently missed.

Hehe.

Oh, and I should correct myself, we don't even *have* deacons.

Someday you're gonna have to tell us how you guys met. So often it's hard to see a Pastor as a real person, so I like hearing about how they convinced a spit fire of a lady to marry them.

Wow...I never thought of people being upset by it. Everyone I have ever talked to about it from our church has said that they appreciate knowing they were missed. I did ask the pastor's wife what happens if someone doesn't ever come back. I guess after a couple phone calls, a deacon or pastor stops by to make sure they are okay and don't need anything. Depending on that visit, they may follow up a time or two more, but then if the people don't come back, they leave them be. This isn't just visitors who've come a few times...this is for people who have come and been involved for a while.

As for who calls ME when we aren't there...it is usually my Bible study ladies, my close friends. I don't mind at all. It's very rare that we aren't there because even if one or more of the kids are sick, one of us usually still goes and takes whoever isn't sick.

My pastor just spoke on this recently in Sunday School. He was talking about being part of the body and how we all need each other, and even if you feel like you don't need to be in church, there may be someone else who needs you to be there. He said for a church member to not be in church and not tell anyone why was a great cause for concern, and I agree. I wouldn't want to be a member of a church that didn't care if I was there or not. He also emphasized that if you have a need, ASK! Many times, people are too embarrassed to admit a need, and they don't need to be. We are a family and we take care of each other.

When we were going to church regularly we never had anyone call to find out where we were when we started missing. I was in the hospital and was really sick for a long time and no one (not even our care group) called to see what was going on. Lorne actually had to call them to ask for prayer and they still didn't seem to care. It wasn't hard to leave an unfriendly church like that. And it hasn't been hard to lose contact with our care group. We are happy to leave all of that behind.

Our church prays over the sick and anoints with oil when needed. If someone became ill during church, even something minor, we would pray over them. There is also somewhere they can go and lie down if they are not feeling that well.

Cell phones going off in church annoyed me until mine went off one day. We were in a hurry to get there and I forgot to turn off the ringer. So now I don't mind too much because I know you can forget to turn it off. On Wednesday nights, I have to keep the phone on because Dh can get calls for work, but I put it on vibrate, keep it in my pocket and then excuse myself if it rings.

We are a VERY small church, so yes, people notice if we aren't there. Usually the pastor will call, but he's my BIL, so we usually talk to him during the week anyway.

My BIL told a story on Sunday about an old church they attended. There was one deacon, who if people didn't show up to church on Sunday, he would go around to their houses to collect their offering! Just one of the many reasons we don't attend that church.

I think that once you are "part" of a church; it shouldn't feel like something that would put you on the spot needing to explain yourself. A lot of times it is someone that you would normally have contact with during the week anyway.

We recently changed churches, and no one from our old church contacted us about it. The scary thing is that we were in leadership, too. There have been several families who have decided to change churches within the same time period, and there were some leadership changes.

Oh yeah, I know it's not supposed to be like that.

It's already happening to us again and we just went to church once in our new city. It is such a large church that you have to contact a lady in charge of care groups. There are over 40 different groups on our side of town so that is why you have to contact the main lady. We got a hold of her over a month ago and gave her our info and what kind of group we are interested in. She took 3 weeks to get back to us (she was sick so that is why). She emailed Lorne last monday telling us that she found a group for us and gave them our phone number and that they would call us right away.

Well, we haven't gotten a call or a message from anyone. She gave us their names and I haven't seen that on our caller i.d once.

So now we are wondering if they are going to call and why they have taken a week already. They could also email us, but that hasn't happened either.

As care group leaders you would think they would move a bit quicker right? Especially since we are new to the city.

I hope they call soon.

LOL! I would just give that pastor my garbage bag and close the door. Or would that be too mean?

When someone is absent at church and the reason not known someone usually checks on them to make sure they are okay. When I miss, I almost always get an email just saying they missed me and hope all is well. I appreciate it, and it usually helps me overcome my laziness (which is a problem some Sundays) because I'd rather not say, "Oh, I wasnt here because I decided to sleep instead." Its not usually our deacons but usually someone closer, like from Sunday School class, or a good friend. But our church is small (a good Sunday averages about 40).

Cell phones going off...I understand that some people cant turn theirs off because of expecting a call or emergency situations and such, but those arent the ones who bug me. Luckily, our church is out in the country and many folks cant get signal anyway so....

I'd feel better about an email. I don't mean to indicate that my church doesn't care; they do, I'd just feel embarrassed having to explain why we missed, wondering if my reason was "good enough". I value the fellowship of my church, but I value my privacy, too.

We regularly meet in small groups and pray for each other, so there's ample opprotunity to connect with people who care about you.

I visited my home church yesterday and a lady behind me apparently couldn't turn her cell phone off. It rang once and I heard her digging it out of her purse. A minute later it rang again. Repeat 3 times.

It is annoying and distracting to me when they keep going off. I understand that sometimes we forget, but if mine rings one time, you betcha I am going to turn it OFF and not let it keep ringing.

Also, I have noticed some teens texting in church and that is not good, imo.

Exactly!

There has been a time or two I was expecting a call or something important, but in those cases I turned my phone to vibrate or "beep once" and kept it nearby and when it did ring I quietly excused myself.

My old pastor's phone went off while he was preaching. :) He's the pastor of Bellvue now (he took Adrian Rogers' place), but when he was here and it went off he just answered it... in the midst of the sermon for everyone to hear.

I know who that is. We used to watch your church on Sunday mornings while we were getting ready for Sunday School. Cool!

If I miss a sunday I try to watch it on tv... but the ones on are two or three weeks behind. :( I do miss Dr Gaines though.... a lot. I hear the people at Bellvue (as a whole) don't like him... we loved him though. My mom jokes that he should come back where no one got onto him about mowing his yard in old jeans.

I wish my church was like that. I think with how big my church is (11,000+ members, but about a thousand of us per service on Sunday) they can't do it well. But I think when people are sick, and esp. when no one else really checks on them, it can make them feel better if someone calls/emails, etc. I know when I had my surgery and couldn't walk/sit or do anything else normally I'd have appreciated someone from church checking on me.

I'm sure it would be much harder to do in a bigger church. Our church has about 150 there per week, and about 200 regular attenders...about 1/3 or more of those being kids.

Nicole...ugh! Are there any smaller churches around? I'm sorry that's happening to you again.

There are dozens of churches to choose from since our city has over a million people. We think that we might just wait till we move to our new town and try out one of the churches there. There's only a handful or less to choose from. Or we could just continue going to this large church for learning purposes. But it is hard for us want to go cuz for us church=blah.

yeah exactly....and then some churches don't "care" at all ...I would much rather be annoyed that too many people called then be ignored because we can't go to church for a few weeks because of things like sickness, etc

quote:

we can't go right now (I can't lift Jack and Paul can't because of his surgeries)...and I am very annoyed with our church because of their attitude with this. We let them know that Paul would be having surgery on both knees and we wouldn't be able to go for a month or two...we have not gotten even one phone call from anyone about anything. That was ultimately the attitude that made us leave the church we were going to when we first got here....because in all we went through last fall NO ONE called ever to check on us, and when we did go to church no one would even look at me or talk to me.
I guess we know where we truly have friends...and it isn't here in OK. We have even gotten emails from people at my moms church who were checking in on us because they heard that Paul had knee surgery...but nothing from anyone here.
at this point though I almost see no point in even going to church again...which is really sad because I love church...I grew up going every time the doors were open.

We have around 1000 people per service, and the size of our church is why they so strongly promote getting involved with a small group. It's the best of both worlds, I think. We are big enough to have a good number of outreaches and ministries but the small groups keep you from feeling "lost".
