I've been away at a small Christian family camp for the last week and I just catching up now in CW. {{{{{{{{{{Jeanie}}}}}}}}}}} I'm sorry for the way your brother has been jerked around. I agree with you. It isn't right. quote:
In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, the word of God delivers a very serious warning against certain sins. Among these sins is sodomy, or homosexuality. The TNIV obscures the seriousness of the judgement on "homosexuals" by confusing the sin of "homosexuals" by adding the word "practicing". It’s no longer "homosexuals" but "practicing homosexuals"...Are the TNIV translators implying it's ok to be a homosexual, just not a "practicing homosexual"? This article really upset me. The translators are trying to distinguish between those who are acting homosexually and those who might identify themselves as homosexual but who are living chaste lives. Surely the authors of this article can see the difference. Does it really matter how this difference is articulated? It's not the temptation that is the sin but the giving into the temptation, whether in thought or in deed. Jesus was tempted in every way we are and yet he did not sin. As for the guy suing Zondervan, he surely doesn't expect to win. He's nuts. quote:
Homosexuality is wrong...but what if you have homosexual feelings and choose not to act on them? So then you're not a "practicing" homosexual...are you still a homosexual? Or someone who struggles with homosexual feelings? But even though you're tempetd, you're not acting on them....so are you sinning? Of course not! quote:
Well, the Bible tells us in Matthew 5 that whoever lusts after a woman has committed adultery in his heart already. To me, that says if he has thoughts of lusting, he's committed the sin. Wouldn't the same "logic" apply to other sins? There's a difference between being tempted to lust and lusting. quote:
It's one thing to be tempted (whatever that temptation might be) and to act upon that temptation and thereby sin. Exactly! quote:
...one of the biggest battles was getting clients to see homosexuality as a behavior rather than an identity. In truth, they choose to embrace their sinful desires instead of confessing them as sin and then directing their attention in godly paths. I think it's a matter of semantics. How do you define "homosexual"? Is it someone who is sexually/romantically attracted to the same sex or is it someone who is actively sexual/romantic with the same sex? I think there will always be disagreement about the answer. quote:
She KNOWS the truth and I do not feel the need to beat her over the head with it. I appreciate that she loves my kids and is still willing to let us be a big part of her life, even though she has walked away from God (never had a strong faith to begin with). I enjoy spending time with her and having serious discussions with her without beating her with my Bible. She reminds me a lot of myself at that age, actually, and it was the people who just loved me where I was at that made it easy for me to come back to Christ eventually. Bless you for this attitude! I wish more people took that stance.

This "logic" quote:
ORIGINAL: daughter_of_faith Well, the Bible tells us in Matthew 5 that whoever lusts after a woman has committed adultery in his heart already. To me, that says if he has thoughts of lusting, he's committed the sin. Wouldn't the same "logic" apply to other sins? was more or less directed toward this "logic" quote:
ORIGINAL: purejoy I guess, the part about comparing it to a "practicing murderer" didn't really make sense to me. If you're not not murdering anyone, then you're not a "practicing" murder because you're not doing anything....so that's not wrong. Basically...if one has thoughts of the act & lets their mind wander to those things...they've committed the act.

My SIL is a "practicing" lesbian. I've spelled out for her in no uncertain terms the truth but she's so sucked into the lifestyle/culture she won't listen. She was kind of raised in the church. She did the first communion, etc. at the right times but weekly attendance wasn't a big deal. Nothing was taught at home. She and DH were just kind of expected to pick it up from the priests by osmosis, I guess. She's a very hard-headed, immature person so anything contrary to what she wants to believe just doesn't sink in. You're right, Magdeleine, the guy suing Zondervan is nuts but in this day and age I'm not so sure he can't win. I think it's worse than a frivolous lawsuit and the odds are good he'll lose, but with the courts today, who knows? If the right (or should I say, wrong) people get involved in it with the right amount of money, it could be used to really shut down free speech, starting with God's own Word. I know God's big enough not to allow it, but sometimes He does permit things to happen so that the church militant has to fight that much harder.

Just for the record, the TNIV does say on the first page, "this is a gay Bible so if you're not gay, don't read it." JUST KIDDING!!! Gay people are gay for the same reason that straight people have extra-marital affairs: sin. Doesn't matter what you want to call it or how you dress it up, its still sin. Most of them know its sin and they don't really care, so making sure that the unsaved world knows that we as believers think that homosexuality is sin seems rather redundant to me. Yep- they know it. What sinful people need is loving Christians to share Christ with them in every intangible way that they might have never felt to start with. It is now known that at least 40% of practicing gay men claim to have been sexually abused as children. Imagine the gay men that don't or won't admit to sexual abuse, and the numbers stagger the mind. Only the love of Christ can turn a person from sin. I think that an unbelieving sinner will receive plenty of wrath in the hereafter to be exempt from it here on earth. The law was through Moses, but Grace is what we have in Christ. I liked what ya'll said: "I enjoy spending time with her and having serious discussions with her without beating her with my Bible. "
