Well I shaved it again yesterday. So I will continue to do so for now. I don't shave it with my razor though. I use electric hair clippers without a guard. It still cuts it pretty short. I don't know if you have ever seen the show Prison Break. The two brothers in that show have their head's shaved. That is about how mine is after I cut it. Although you can still see the horseshoe pattern on me.

I am still not sure it looks good on me though. I have thick black eyebrows and it just looks strange when I look in the mirror. I wear ball caps a lot because of it.

I feel your pain brother. I was thinning at 21 too. I was bald before I was 30. My uncle, who is only 4 year older than me, was slick on top at 21. He shaves his head too. But it seems to work better on him than on me.

About 20 years ago, I saw a man with a combover driving a convertible. It was like his hair was waving at hello to everyone. It's one of those images that never leaves you.

My dad starting going bald when he was 17. I'm just proud to have out-done him.

Men are so hung up on baldnessdom. I have heard men around me everywhere...church...work...friends...discuss going bald.

I can say that it is not a problem for me since in the past I have dated more than one balding man.

The first? The 22 year old I dated at 23...he did not confront his baldness problem and even wore a sort of balding mullet pony tail.

That was not good. I ran into him years later and he had shaved it off. Definite improvement.

I personally am partial to the toupee affixed slightly off-centre!!!

My husband started shaving his head when his hairline started moving back a bit. He shaves his hair completely off, and I love the feel of it as it's growing in, but he always shaves it off again. He looks much better with no hair than with hair, and he looks younger.

Though, as mentioned, not every man looks good with a bald head, so you need to be careful about that as well.

I think a lot of men look great with their hair completely shaved off, which I've seen a lot in the last few years. Depends on the shape of their heads, of course.

But none of them have approached me -- they (it's not that many--LOL) all seem to have full heads of hair.

(And of course, a bald man will ask me for my number tomorrow...)

Its true. Many men, including myself are hung up on baldness. I would say that its more than just being hung up. For many men, going bald is emotionally traumatic. Especially when it happens at a relatively young age. I agree that its not rational. But I think there are many reasons why we are hung up on it. In our culture, baldness is commonly associated with being old. Mainstream society, especially TV and movies, portrays bald men as either being old, out of step with society, or just plain losers. In an earlier post, someone mentioned the character Ted on the TV show Scrubs that is bald. This is a perfect example. Ted is made to look like a complete loser in the show. No one, not even the show's "good guys" likes Ted. The only bald men that are not portrayed this way are the ones that shave their heads.

Sean Connery
and Patrick Stewart


They are always portrayed in very powerful and/or charismatic roles . . . and they're both quite very handsome.

I stand corrected. You are right WhiteRoseBlessings, there are a few bald actors that are portrayed positively. Bruce Willis also comes to mind. But more often than not, bald men are not portrayed this way in Hollywood. But thats not really my point. I believe that men are concerned about baldness because, since childhood, we have seen more negatives about baldness than positives. Not just from Hollywood, but in society in general. Probably the most negative thing for me was having a grandfather that was bald and a father that wasn't when I went bald. It made me feel very old and unattractive.

New68 - that's why I posted about Sean and Patrick . . . it was meant as an encouragement.


Hollywood attacks both genders about what is and is not considered attractive. You're right; it's quite pervasive.

However, Hollywood isn't the end-all and be-all . . . and for that, I'm very thankful.

Unfortunately much of society's views on what is and what is not physically attractive is because of brainwashing from not only Hollywood; but the various medias.

BUT! We should never cull our value or worth or even physical attractiveness from what the advertisers want us to believe; that's all marketing (even from Hollywood).

I bet if you look around you, you'd be able to see people (men and women) that have both "attractive" and "not so attractive"physical features. You'll probably also be able to find men with similar features who look totally different. For instance, not all bald men are physically attractive; however, neither are all bald men physically unattractive.

The same thing could be said for the color of one's eyes, etc., etc.

I enjoy watching the show Ugly Betty. Shows how silly and confused the elite fashion types can be...Hollywood and the famous can be like that. We get these images and feel badly about ourselves. Be encouraged. Any woman worth her salt will not be hung up over a few strands of hair but over the content of your character.

You are right about the brainwashing. Rationally I know its brainwashing, but emotionally it still affects me.

As for looking around at people around me. I have done this. I don't really find many men attractive (bald or not), but I do find many women attractive that society tells me are not attractive because they are too fat or too short or whatever.

If you have found a dear wife who doesn't get hung up on baldness, then why are you fretting about it? Are you worried about this affecting say your employment? Or social life?

Some of the most popular men I have known in my life have been balding/bald men.

I guess its because I am a very insecure person. Especially about my appearance. I know its not rational.

As for my wife, she wants me to grow my remaining hair out longer. She doesn't like the shaved look on me. I disagree, so we are at odds over it. I have left it longer for her for many years, but have never liked how it looked. I think that is what prompted me to ask the question in this forum. To see what other women think. But it seems most women think shaved looks good on some men but not others. So I still really don't know. And I am not so vain that I am going to post a picture of myself and ask women to tell me if I am good looking or not.

I'll also add Ed Harris, Anthony Edwards, and Ben Kingsley to the list.

Seriously though, I like different hair(or no hair)styles on different men. What's more important is the attitude of the man. If he's got so little self confidence that he feels like he HAS to hold on to the little hair he may have left, then he's not going to be attractive, in the same way that a woman who is going to extreme lengths to look young is not attractive.

One of my favorite things to do is give my grandfather a scalp massage. [:D]

Keeping one's hair/losing one's hair...a man will have character if he has character, and character goes a long way towards attractiveness. It doesn't depend upon the amount of hair on his head.

I do echo the previously-posted opinions about the comb-over, though. [:'(]
