That is what I found also. It cannot be viewed as extra. They won't take it seriously.

I have two that I graduated 3 years ago and one in 12th grade. Plus I have a little bit that is 2 1/2 yo! [:)] My ds is using just two subjects at the moment in order to catch up. They are Apologia Biology and and Homesat Pre-Cal. He will have to go back and do TT Geometry when he finishes Pre-Cal, and he will move on to Apologia Physics.

We were using Diana Warings Ancient Civilazations and the Bible for Bible, history, and literature till we put it away for him to catch up math and science. He was also using R&S English. Most likely I will have him finish these two as soon as he is done with catching up the others.

When my other two were in school we combined all three kids as much as possible. This was usually done with Bible, history, and literature. High school things (have not had coffee yet...things work) we have used in the past:

smatterings of BJU and Abeka
all the Notgrass highschool studies (world, American, and government which cover hist, Bible, and lit)
LLATL American Gold
Dd took Where Brook and River Meet one year (covered most subjects)
almost all Apologia highschool sciences
Mostly Homesat for math but one year of TT
Mostly ABeka for grammar
One year dd studied eatible plants and gardening for science
Sewing, art, guitar, piano, pottery, carpentry
Diana Warings Romans, Reformers, Revolutionaries


I'm sure that we have done more, but I really do need some coffee! [sm=icon_smile_sleepy.gif]

If you are already doing school this way, what if you continue in high school. You just require the level of your high school student's work to be at high school level, and younger children at theirs.

Keep track of their time, take pictures of projects and copy reports to show what they've been doing and use the spreadsheet to make a transcript (or homeschool tracker).

Sounds simple - but I do feel intimidated at times too! I think if we've done it up to now, we will be able to do high school successfully as well.

One of my best friends & I both have a child going into highschool next year & are kinda freaking out. [8D] I will check out the books & sights that have been previoulsy mentioned, but I have anouther question. Our local support group is very nice and all but my friend & I are the only relaxed homeschoolers in the group with children as old as some of ours.

I am so happy that I found this thread! I have a sophomore in High School that we are homeschooling with Lincoln-Nebraska. I have needed a support group and looks like this could be it!
My daughter is planning on graduating with their diploma program.

We don't know any other homeschoolers and finding friends is becoming a challenge. I don't want her to end up a recluse. I have trouble getting out, myself, so that doesn't help.

I'm just glad to have a place to come to. Thanks for having this thread!

Yes, I think that it needs to be clear that it is still part of school. They can break for lunch, but then nothing else until it is done.

This brings up a question that I have been pondering... how important is it to have an "accredited" diploma when it comes to getting into colleges? As I have mentioned, DD will be in 8th grade next year, and I plan to use it to prepare for high school. I have thought seriously about the Abeka DVD program, because of the accreditation part.
Any thoughts on this??

I don't think it matters. Most homeschoolers simply make their child a diploma and off they go.

If you are home schooling according to your state law, you can issue a diploma. Your child is being legally educated. That sounds ridiculous that a parent could somehow illegally educate their own child, but my point is that educating your own child is an accept practice allowed by law, so there is no reason why you wouldn't be able to issue a diploma.

That makes sense. But do colleges question the validity of the grades or GPA? I know that lots of homeschool kids have gotten into lots of colleges. I just want to have it be a smooth transition for her when the time comes. Plus she is very bright, and I want them to see that in her grades, and not have it just be what "mom" thinks she should have for a grade. Make sense??

I'd be wary of making grades the focus as you want her to enjoy learning for learning's sake and to get what she can out of a class rather than aiming at doing just enough, kwim?

Anyway, every college will be a little different but when the time comes, you will do find. Some colleges are going to be happy with a transcript (see the Form+U+la book for info on keeping track of those), some will want portfolios, etc. Plus she'll have taken the SAT/ACT and that will assist her.

Have you been to Lee Binz's website? She teaches about homeschooling through high school and has an e-mail newsletter.The Home Scholar.

I am new to this board and new to the homeschooling idea. I have one that will be entering 8th grade and one entering 11th grade next year. I really want to home school them for various reasons including I don't feel they are getting what they should be in school and am just very displeased. My problem is that most of the high school curriculums seem to build from the 8th grade up since my ds is entering 11th where do i start it is all very confusing!? I would like to test both prior to beginning and need a little direction that way...is there a free site where i can test them myself? or how do you go about that, to see truly what grade level they are actually at? My son is adhd and has had some problems in school and i think this may be the saving grace for him academically. I would want to write my own curriculum because in my honest and humble opinion the idea is to have them think outside the box so a curriculum that basically says do this book then this then this from this particular company only does'nt seem like it would be a fit always, I speak of the online schools where you can get the whole package from. I am sure it works well for some just not what i am thinking when i think of hs, at least not what would fit my family. So what i see is maybe having different books from different companies but also college equivalent. I probably make no sense whatsoever. I have looked and looked but the possibilities are so endless it is mind boggling. I have seen the rosetta stone highly recommended for foreign language is there any other less expensive but high quality options out there? teaching textbooks also seems like a good one is there also other options less expensive but very good? Anyone that has a idea where i am coming from that would be so kind enough to take me under their wing i would be so unbelievably grateful. I really want to make this a reality for my kids. It will be hard and they will have to self study and self motivate a good amount as i work a full time job, but i feel this is doable. My husband will be willing to help but did not finish high school, although i think this may benefit him just helping the kids best he can and maybe leading in bible study etc... So i think this will help our family as a whole, he is very exited about the family time this will allow. Thank you in advance for anyone kind enough to take the time to help.

I am just posting to boot this up to the top of the forum to see if anyone could give ymaddox some suggestions.

Welcome ymaddox!! I will have a soon-to-be 8th grader also!! She is my oldest though, so I wouldn't be much help for your concerns over the 11th grader.

Cynthia ~ I was reading in another post and wanted to ask you this... will you be using the notgrass history and the starting points both together at the same time?? Is your daughter in 8th grade now and using the starting points? Or is she in grade 7?

ymaddox ~ I am using "The Learnables" for a foreign language. I am only on lesson two, but I like it so far. It is around 50.00 dollars brand new, maybe cheaper on ebay. The first year is all listening to tapes and looking at pictures, but I was told that it is still = to a high school credit.

She will use Starting Points this year and next. This year she will only use Starting Points. In the fall we will begin Notgrass and she will continue with Starting Points until she is finished.

ETA: She is currently in 8th grade.

thanks for booting this to the top for me i really appreciate it. did you look at the livemocha post, that is a really neat foreign language site, and it's free for now. So what is your curriculum going to be for your 8th grader, have you decided? There is alot of info. out there, makes my brain hurt! Any definate book reads for your 8th grader or you going to just kind of let her/him pick and choose? Does anyone use AR books grade appropriate for their children? I am going to take this one subject pick at a time and see if i can have this thought out before the kids are out of school for the summer...good luck to me [:D] !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dd will be starting high school next year and I have never used LLATL but it looks like something she might like. Can it be used for an English credit for high school and can you describe how you use it? She loves history and doesn't like text book history. Could we use this for english as well as US history? If not what would you recommend? We use Write at Home for writing and will continue. I plan on buying the Drive Thru American History when it comes out. Thanks for your advice.

LLATL is different for high school than the previous years. I have not seen the high school program, but do know that it is not designed to be used for history and I don't think it would be a good choice for that. If you are wanting to combine literature and history, take a look at Notgrass American History. The program uses literature and originial documents along with the textbook. I was never interested in history, after going through twelve years of textbook style history. When I started history with my children using a literature approach, it was much more interesting. We also used Mystery of History and I plan to use it for my 3rd and 6th graders next year. I think that can be used in high school, but I'm not sure.

I guess I should have mentioned that we have been using The Story of the World and are in the 3rd volume. I'm not sure if the 4th volume would count as a high school course. I think she will read it anyway. I may have to find something else for US History, but it will need to be in story form. What is the LLATL for high school? Has anyone used this?
