I don't know that I would ever have called her a "gospel" singer, since that was never her style, but yes she's still around and performing.

That's harsh--cut the girl some slack.

She has some good songs. I've always been really fond of Lead Me On.

Personally, I've never understood what was so great about Amy. I guess because she was one of the "first" big CCM artists, although "first" doesn't always equal "great".

Her voice is mediocre at best, and her best songs were written by other people.

But hey, she's managed to make a career out of doing what she loves, so God bless her....

Sparrow just recently reissued all of her albums throughout her career and she also now has a "Greatest Hits" CD focusing on most of her post '86 stuff, although there is one or two older songs on there as well.

While I am not happy about some of Amy's life choices, I do like many of her songs, particularly her earlier things. I do not think it matters if her best songs were written by other people. I think it actually takes more talent to sing other people's songs but to put your own flavor into it. If you only sing songs you write, of course they will be automatically written for your own voice, range, etc. which may mean you don't really stretch yourself as much musically. Also, just because someone is a good singer does not mean they will automatically be a good songwriter, and vice versa. I don't know if Sinatra ever wrote a single song, but I am sure glad he sang many songs written by other people. I think it is great that his best songs were written by people other than himself, and I saw him once in concert. He seemed to give credit to the songwriter for every single song that he performed. I even like it when different singers record the same song with their own style, if it is a great song.

Sinatra had one thing Amy doesn't and that is talent

I agree with your post. I don't wish any ill will on her or the folks who are her fans but I've just never been taken by her voice.
She has managed to bless a lot of people and the Lord through her talents and has weathered a few storms in her life and apparently still praises our God so thumbs up to her.

Now that I have to disagree with, she is quite talented!

Actually, Amy Grant's most recent hymns project was released in 2005. It's titled Rock Of Ages: Hymns And Faith.

It is excellent...and very much in a Southern Gospel vein with some involvement by Vince Gill. Of course, no one will call it Southern Gospel...not her record label and not in the Southern Gospel industry...because it happens to be Amy Grant doing the singing. (The moderator even felt it wasn't appropriate to discuss Amy Grant on the Southern Gospel message board.) Kelly Nelon could release a CD using Amy Grant's tracks from this CD and singing in a similar style and it would be considered Southern Gospel by everyone who heard it.

Since 2005, Amy Grant has released a live project called Time Again and there's been a couple of compilations...Mosaic and Greatest Hits.

As for whether she "still sings gospel music," questions like that are always loaded, aren't they?

The truth is that there's never really been a time in her career when she didn't sing some gospel music. She has also been quite famous as a secular singer, of course, but that doesn't mean she ever stopped singing some gospel/Christian songs at her concerts.

Amy Grant still actively tours. Her most recent live recording featured several selections like "Thy Word" and "El Shaddai."

Any of this information can be found by doing a few Google searches.

Well, let me say this--if it was not for Amy, the females of CCM would not gain a foothold in the door. And I mean it. And yes, I support and still support her because she has gone through a lot of flack from her haters, the tradtional gospel community and christians.

Ah, the good old "hate" accusation, meaning that because we vehenemently disagree with some of her moral choices that we obviously must "hate" the woman.

I would go on, but once the "hate" card has been played, all bets for a rational discussion are off......

What about Annie Herring?

I didn't know she was a gospel singer, I thought she was a secular artist who happened to be Christian. I have no idea what she's up to.

I have to echo an earlier sentiment. I think Annie Herring and Second chapter of Acts as well as Lovesong paved the way for CCM females.

The relevance of Amy really is her history. She has lived a life success, failure, restoration, and healing. Sounds like most of us. Except for those of you who have lived perfect lives, God pardons you. ;-) There is a great video biography on youtube if you can stomach that was produced by Lifetime. he he. The only weird thing was commentary by Melissa Etheridge, who's a great talent but has her own issues. uh...hum. any way if you want to view the Amy History and how she became successful, go to the link however don't be suprised that Amy really doesn't think she's that talented either but rather the music career found her.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVEK47ohSkA&feature=related

if it doesn't work search "amy grant intimate portrait" and start with part 1.
