i would hope that, if people are offended by an avatar, they would pm that individual and engage them in some discussion about it. i would expect that most people aren't intentionally trying to offend anyone -- they have chosen their avatar for any number of reasons: personal, aesthetic, conceptual. i highly doubt there are too many people out to offend.

I would consider that harrassment. I would never do that to anyone else, either. Regardless of how icky the avatar is.

For those who know me, you know that I have a bizarre sense of humor, so I love a goofy avatar. I like avatars and signatures because they do give you a glimpse into who a poster is: proud grandpa, goofball, artsy type, weird like me [8D].

I also like humorous stuff because I like a good debate but around here a good debate can get super heated really fast. Sometimes people cool off a little when they see you aren't some horrid person IRL... [:D]And if people are ever offended by my avatars, well, get a life... [&:]

maybe. but i would hope that a pm would give both individuals the opportunity to address issues without a huge maelstrom of offense erupting that involves a larger community needlessly. i also think it's biblical a la matthew 18. i would (and have) taken the time to address questions, but have also made it clear when it crosses the line into harassment, or threatens to. then again, i save all my email correspondence to specifically address such possibilities (and cover my butt). I looooooove your avatar! [sm=icon_smile_faint.gif]

I would look at it and think, "nahhh...that can't be him..." so I have to say I have spent a lot of time gazing at your avatar. *grins sheepishly*

ATTENTION MODERATOR'S NOTE:

As this topic has come up a couple times in the thread, it clearly needs to be addressed. If you think someone's icon/avatar/doohickey is offensive, please do NOT PM them. Find one of their posts, and click on the "report this post" link. Then you can add the details in the ticket.

It is the same if you think a post violates TOS. Report the post, and let the moderators who are trained to handle those situations deal with it.

Sending someone a PM complaining about their avatar/icon or a post they made is not appropriate in the forums.

Thanks!

I think we should stop calling them avatars and call them doohickeys instead. Takes care of that bothersome Hindu thing. [:D]

I have a co-worker who calls all of our computer stuff "doohickeys".. So, you might have to find a less technical term.. Say "thingamabob". That way it won't get confused with highly technical computer equipment.[:D] or that Hindu thingy

I think it would be considered unwanted spiritual advice

I think that doohickeys have something to do with hickeys.

Just kidding, but I would not be surprised if somebody actually thought that way.

BTW. I change avatars on a whim.

oh. okay.

Okami -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/17/2008 11:00:13 PM)

Around Halloween, some un-nerving ones start to show up.
Not much else bothers me.

When I first came here, I used a South park character generator to make one that looked like me.
It did give a wrong impression though. I can't be serious about convictions if I look like I'm endorsing a tv show I won't watch.

I found my current one doing a google search for "creation", and cropped it a lot.
Here is the full pic:

sunshine4God -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/18/2008 1:26:15 AM)

I love avatars except for ones that are scary looking,or skanky looking.
My avatar is a picture of me,which I love but might change again soon.

Kath -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/18/2008 2:13:32 AM)

There are some I've found offensive but were considered acceptable, so I just tried not to look at them.

I like to change mine all the time. [sm=smile.gif]

I even changed my handle once....

I think I was going through an identity crisis.... :D

I change my handle as often as I change my avatar...LOL...I've been here for 3 months and I'm on my second name. *grin* Not quite sure which Disney Princess I want to be...LOL

LaurainAL -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/18/2008 9:55:56 AM)

I have seen only one that I find offensive, and it was not on Crosswalk. It was a painting of the sermon on the mount. They had added speech balloons, and I won't post what they said because it would be a TOS violation.

doinkdom -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/18/2008 11:31:58 AM)

I must admit there have been times when I see someone's picture and think,"huh[8|] weirdo." [:D]

I've used a variety of doohickey picture thingys. Some of me and my grandkids, some of my grandkids and some that are just goofy.

I tend to see the picture before I see the name, so if the picture changes...I ain't got a clue. Especially, for those with very similar names.

CoeurdeLeon -> RE: Avatars, free expression, or offensive to some. (3/18/2008 11:33:56 AM)

I use the same picture doohickey so that I can recognize myself. Otherwise, I'd forget I posted somewhere and post the same thing again. This way I see "me" and realize that my work there is done.[8|][8D]

best reasoning yet! [:D]

I think I actually did that a time or two [>:]
