I'm sorry! I didn't get back online last night like I had planned.

I'm looking at Phosy's list and I'll fill you in on what we did:

1. We went to the Astoria Column, but the steps are being rebuilt so we couldn't go up. We did enjoy being there anyway, though.

2. We drove the Columbia River bridge many times just for the fun of it. Very cool.

3. We went to the Peter Iredale, but they were filming The Road for three days right there, so we couldn't see it. We managed to stop by on our last day though, and had great fun. It was very windy that day and the waves were very big!

4. We loved Fort Clatsop. We enjoyed the walks around the area and it was fascinating to see the reconstruction of their winter fort.

5. We didn't see the Goonies house, but we did drive around the town a lot and enjoyed looking at the houses. The town is very quaint.

6. We thought Fort Columbia State Park was very pretty!

7. We visited Cape Disappointment, where our daughter was greatly disappointed because at 6 she wasn't old enough to climb to the top of the lighthouse. Lots of tears at Cape Disappointment. [:o] But then we did a beach, and she was a happy girl. [sm=redhairsmile.gif]

8. We drove through Long Beach on a rainy morning, and we thought that it was definitely a drive back to the 60's and 70's. The Washington side is definitely a different sort of environment than the Astoria side. [;)]

9. We absolutely loved Fort Stevens State Park and we thought that when/if we get back, we would love to spend many days there doing the walks and enjoying the quiet serene beauty. The beaches there were our favorite.

And I'm sorry I haven't posted pictures--I'll change my avatar once in a while to show a bit of what we saw. [sm=icon_smile_blush.gif]

I'll post about our hotel next--it was incredible!

Cranky, what an amazing vacation! I'm very much enjoying reading about it!
I love old forts and I love state parks.

I think #8 would have been my very favorite activity.

I'm glad the beach helped alleviate the disappointment that your daughter felt over not being old enough to climb to the top of the lighthouse . . . made me want to cry for her.

Until next time, I am
Vicariously waiting more more.

Two more:

10. We absolutely loved the Maritime Museum. We thought it was one of the very best museums we have ever been through. Did you visit it, Phosy?

11. We couldn't take the trolley because two cruise ships came in on Friday, and that was the day the trolley was running--it was completely loaded up with cruise folks so we didn't even try.

Our hotel:

We stayed at the Cannery Pier Hotel. We could see Phosy's hotel too--and it definitely also looks like a nice place to stay. Both hotels have the very best view of the river in town.

We felt very pampered. [:)] We took the fun car into town twice. Our kids were positively thrilled. The staff was professional. They had excellent coffee provided at all hours. I admit I tried the wine for a couple of evenings. The kids and I enjoyed the hot tub one evening--wow! Seriously, I was as pampered as a girl can get. [sm=redhairsmile.gif]

Restaurants:

We tried lots of variety--from small scary places to some very nice. I ate A LOT of crab cakes and shrimp cakes and Caesar salads and clam chowders. YUM!!! [sm=tonguehappy.gif] Only one restaurant was seriously gross. [:'(] [:D]

I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself Cranky! I absolutely LOVE that area. It's so beautiful and there is so much to see. If it makes your daughter feel better, I didn't get to hike up to the lighthouses either - not because I wasn't old enough, but by that time, my feet hurt so bad from other hikes, I wasn't sure I'd make it up the trails! [:D]

I didn't make it to the maritime museum but someday I am certainly planning on going back.

I need a vacation... [8D]
