caoimhin -> A nightmare before Easter (3/21/2008 7:38:07 AM)

The following is an actual dream that woke me out of a sound sleep an hour ago. Warning: Some people might find it disturbing. I found myself with my kids in a large camp used as a family-friendly retreat center. My wife, for some unknown reason, had not come with us. The place was thronged with people, so much so that the first thing I was aware of was that I had become separated from my kids. I went looking for them, through the outdoor crowds and in the various small houses where guests were also milling about, sometimes engaged in illicit activities. There was a vague sense of fear in the crowds but some distracted themselves with amusements. I first found my son, and noticed that he had already started to undergo a transformation. Usually clean-cut and extremely health-conscious, I found him with a cigarette hanging down from the corner of his mouth, causing him to look strikingly like a certain cousin of his who had sponged off the family for years due to his inability to keep a steady job. My son thought this was incredibly funny. This caused my alarm to grow and I set off looking for my daughters with my son in tow. Nineteen and old enough to make his own choices, he chose to come. I next found my youngest daughter in an open area. I suddenly noticed that the man in charge of the island was randomly choosing people and, taking a long rope that was lowered from above, looped it once around a person's neck at which time the rope would pull them up. Looking up to see the end of the rope, I saw that, some six stories above, there was a platform that a henchman was pulling the victim up to. The most diabolical part was that another guest on the ground had to grab the rope and pull it taut, further choking the person in the air, because if not then the rope would loosen and the person would fall to their death. My daughter was next in line for this ordeal. I grabbed her and slipped into the crowd. After more searching, I found my other two kids and told them we must all flee immediately, but I didn't know how or where. Just as I was despairing --and waking-- a stranger appeared, walking through the crowd inconspicuously, and telling people that if they wanted to leave the camp, they were welcome to board his ship at the eastern dock (the camp was an island!). But they must move quickly, because the ruler of the island would shortly detonate a huge bomb, destroying the island and killing everyone on it. The stranger, who was the island's true owner, was about to unleash his private commando force to prevent this and take his island back, and any who chose to stay could get caught in the crossfire. We had a choice: stay on the island and endure the strange mix of tyranny and amusement, or trust this stranger and board his ship. I was now completely awake, with a renewed gratitude for Easter.
