I do hope they don't try and force a romance between the Dr. and Catherine Tate. Just the thought makes me shudder. I don't think Donna would go for that That's one good thing about Donna's character as it has been created. She's rather turned off (physically/romantically) by him being an alien (not surprising given how she was introduced to the fact that aliens exist), and apparently she thinks he's "scrawny." And it's a good thing, because in the new show we've had semi-requited feelings (Rose), unrequited feelings (Martha), and the ex-companion who had semi-requited feelings (Sarah Jane). And...errr....Jack, with his out-of-control phonemes, which fortunately are mostly referred to in subtext and inuendo on Doctor Who (unlike Torchwood). And Mme De Pompador and that teacher lady who fell in love with The Doctor. I've only seen Tate's sketch show once, but she reminded me of Tracy Ulmman, who had a sketch show in the 80's that, among other things, birthed The Simpsons. And currently has a show on Showtime. Similar thing with playing lots of different characters (my current favorite from Tracy is an Indian pharmacist who breaks into Bollywood numbers while giving advice to her customers).

Well, they aired "Poisoned Earth Part 2" last night, and I enjoyed it. The best laugh out loud moment was "Are you my mummy?", after that it was the Doctor's reveal that he'd known about Martha all along. I also enjoyed Donna's role. She wasn't the perfect heroine, in that she was plenty scared and tempted to stay where it was safe, but she still stumbled along to help, not really understanding what she was doing. Only problem was that I couldn't understand half the bloomin' episode! dH and I were constantly asking each other "What did they just say?" Everyone was speaking pretty fast, and with the accents, we were always rewinding or turning up the volume. We should just keep closed captioning on for all British shows.

I must say the show has improved. I'm glad I came back this season. After finishing this episode, I think I agree that I like non-romanatic Donna. It's kind of nice to see them just getting on with destroying aliens without his companion hanging off his every word. I was afraid they would go in that direction when they introduced her this season, since she basically didn't have a life. I'm glad she's a little more rounded and independent, instead. I always thought it was a mistake to have Martha fawning over him last season. It just felt a little tacky since he had just lost Rose, so I think the producers learned from their mistake. It's also nice to see a companion who's a little more equal to the Dr. From the bits and bobs I've seen of the show from the past 30 years, it looked the companion was always a young, vulnerable female. The Dr. was always the all-wise alien. It's kind of nice to see a woman who has the gumption to stand up to him. That reminds me. I've been meaning to ask this, since I'm not in the UK anymore. Why didn't Freeman want to return this season? Or did she have a choice? Did the producers decide not to bring her character back? The only thing I kind of didn't like about Friday's episode was the ending. I'm sure this is probably just my American gung-ho mentality, but I would have just blown the aliens out of the sky and gone home to dinner. I mean, for Pete's sake, the Sontarans had up to that point shown absolutely no remorse about wanting to destroy the human race. I wouldn't have thrown my life away for them.

I thoroughly enjoyed Silence in the Library and am having a hard time waiting for the second part! I am looking forward to next series when Steven Moffatt begins writing as head...I absolutely loved Blink last series and can't wait to see what else he has in him.

ORIGINAL: agapetos In the UK anyhow... who's going to be watching, who's going to be jealous of those of those watching! Not me! Doctor Who lost it when they went hi-tech special effects. Now, it's just a British Star Trek, Battle Star Galactica, etc. It's a whole different show now. The real Doctor Who battled aliens in rubber suits in London quarries depicted as other planets, and ran through hallways of abandoned factories and corporate buildings. If God had intended for Daleks to fly, he would have gave them strings. Hail Tom Baker!!!!

Interesting perspective there, Lee. I guess maybe it's a generational thing. My husband grew up on the orginal series and loved it, but hasn't really gotten into the current one. On the other hand, DW was buried on PBS when I was a kid, so I never heard about it until I went to university (in the 90's). Even then I didn't really have a desire to watch it because the idea of a man flying around in a box sounded pretty silly. Then I moved to Britain in the summer of 2004. That December EVERYBODY in the UK was talking about the return of the Dr. What the heck, I thought, might as well give it a shot and see what everybody's talking about. To my surprise, I actually liked it. Now, if I were to go back and watch the older series, I'd probably laugh. In fact, when they brought back the Daleks and my husband told me how they used to not go up stairs, I did laugh. I'm not making fun of the old shows, just appreciating how far we've come, and, frankly, how much better I think things are now. Edited to remove off topic comments (TOS 9)

If God had intended for Daleks to fly, he would have gave them strings. Hail Tom Baker!!!! Star Trek would never have a David Tennant. John de Lancie's portrayal of Q was the closest thing, and that was used very sparingly. BSG is a whole different ball game, although there are a few campy moments, it's a very dark show. BTW...if anyone likes classic Doctor Who and is considering getting Verizon FIOS, there's an OnDemand channel called Illusion that shows classic DW as well as old sci-fi movies, other BBC sci-fi, anime, etc. Right now they're doing a Tom Baker series, but before that it was a 2nd Doctor series, so they aren't going in order or anything.

Edited to remove off topic comments (TOS 9) It could very well be a generational thing. I think it's really a different show now with similar concepts and visuals. I think the long gap, less verbal censorship, and the changes in television technology has made the usual transition of Doctors impossible. I think it's pretty safe to say that the special effects in the originals (60's-80's Doctor Who) were quite a bit lower than the original Star Trek series. There was a definite charm to them. They made great usage of what little they had to work with. Much of it came across as being on a stage. So, in that perspective, the visuals were quite spectacular. One of the problems I have with the big special fx productions, like the new DW, the various Star Trek series', etc. is they seem to use various themes from popular big budget movies, which allows them to high-light their big special fx. For instance, since ghosts and movies where people are possessed by spirits are popular, DW or ST may create a storyline of an invisible alien possessing crew members. This allows for the whole spectacular visual and audio special fx usage.
