It's certainly true that there are significant differences between DW, ST, and BSG in terms of plot, characters (traits, etc.). However, there seems to be common themes that revolve a lot around the special fx used nowadays in variuos Sci-Fi series in general.
BTW, that channel you're referring to sounds great! I love old sci-fi movies.

That's interesting comparing Q and the Dr.: all-wise aliens who drop into humanity and tell them what they're doing wrong. However, (and this pains me to admit since I loved Q), I'll vote for Tennant as my favorite. Those eyes and that accent get me every time. 
I also agree that you can become overdependent on FX to the detriment of story, character, etc. That's what happened with a certain series of sci-fi movies.  Overall, however, I think that DW has used its FX very well. As I said, I've been very impressed with this season. The writing is much stronger than what I saw last season.

Have you ever by chance seen any of the old episodes with Tom Baker playing the Doctor? He brought a more comical element to DW. The prior Doctors were far more serious. I think TB had the longest go at it, and brought a certain charm to the show. Since then, some of the Doctors have had a definite lighter side to them, including the newer ones. If you've not seen any of the old episodes with TB, I'd strongly recommend checking it out, for historical purposes if nothing else.

I've seen every Doctor, right from William Hartnell.
I don't think that Tom Baker was the first Doctor to introduce the comical element - you couldn't get much more comical than Patrick Troughton!!
Tom Baker wasn't a particular favourite of mine - I liked Jon Pertwee. That was until the new Doctor Who kicked in - because I loved Christopher Eccleston, and *adore* David Tennant!

I can't wait until tomorrow! I confess that I have just seen part I on BBC4 again and will probably watch part II at least twice if it's any good, when they do the repeats on Sunday and next Friday.

So, the Americans saw their first episode with Jenny. I enjoyed her a lot actually; look forward to a few guest appearances.
This time we just broke down and used close captioning. So much easier that way.

Sad? Well, yes of course. But also a little bittersweet. For a creature whose life had been defined by war and killing, he died saving a life.
At the beginning we thought this would be an episode where the humans were the evil race and the hath were good, but no, they were both on equal footing.

Manda, did you see it tonight? I missed a chunk because I was chatting with my neighbour about our gardens. Going to watch it tomorrow (BBC3).
I did watch some of it and couldn't believe the number of hints they used about people.

That's good! This episode taught me to not like spoilers anymore.

1. Looks like the writers have fallen for the common sci-fi tendency to do a "religion is a myth" episode. I found myself thinking during parts of last night's show, "Geesh, who wrote this? Richard Dawkins?" On the other hand, I wonder if they will ever do a "religion is positive" episode. A couple of other major sci-fi shows swung the other way and incorporated religion as a strong element in their character's lives. I'm not holding my breath for this show.
2. "Reformed-character-takes-bullet-for-hero" has got to be one of oldest cliches in TV/movies. I remember seeing this exact same scenario in a British cop drama before we left last year. I enjoyed most of the episode, but when it got near the end, I thought, "Here it comes. They're going to kill Jenny off." I was greatly disappointed that the writers didn't have enough imagination to do something else with her.
3. Donna keeps growing on me. It's nice to have somebody stand up to the Dr. who doesn't come across as a whiny teenager.
4. I enjoyed watching Jenny, but I wish they had left her dead. I felt like I was watching a promo for some new series on BBC Kids. So what's the deal with Jenny, anyway? Are they doing a spin-of with her a la the Sarah Jane Chronicles?

I think she might show up in one of the tv movies next year, babbred.
I loved this week's episode, Forest of the Dead. Makes me very comfortable with Steven Moffat taking over. Along with a possible episode from Neil Gaiman? That's going to be the greatest series.

I did like how The Doctor illustrated to the folks after Jenny died that one can have the RIGHT to take revenge but chose not to, and choosing not to was the better way. Especially considering that all these people knew was the fighting between the races.
And,here in the US we can balance out the show's tendancies towards religion with what comes on right afterwards - BSG, which never has an episode that doesn't deal with religion in one way or another.

I kinda felt the same way...but I almost shed a tear at the response the doctor had of her dying.
Religion in sci-fi always makes me laugh because it generally boils down to some kind of universalism - ya know...all-ways-lead-to sorta thinking.
I think the only one I can remember that actually used the bible "well" was a series called Firefly.

Hmmm...not in BSG...at least, not...yet. There you've got the polytheists and the monotheists and there is conflict between the two belief systems. Only the Cylons used to be momotheists, but at this point in the series many humans are as well.

Yeh, well, I just can't get into the new BSG.
From the git-go, I didn't like it at all.
But that's interesting about the religion part anyway.
