LOL... Been a fan of the show since I was in high school...

High school eh?

Quite the latecomer then! (My dad used to watch Doctor Who when I was little, and I mean little! I used to watch SERIES 1, with William Hartnell, from behind the sofa at 5.50pm every Saturday night! I really started enjoying it in Series 2 with Patrick Troughton, even though he was rather weird, but preferred Jon Pertwee.

quote:

BTW for any aspiring Whovians out there... the best website for info about both the new and old series is Outpost Gallifrey, and the best place to get DW goodies is from a company called "Who North America"... I won't link to it, since it's a commercial site.

Yep, OG is a great resource.

So come on then, what Doctor Who memorabilia do you have?

I don't have a lot, but I do have a 6" inch grey and black Dalek watching over me from my windowsill by my computer. And I also have a gold dalek double egg cup in front of me, where I store my jewellery! lol

Well, by that standard, I guess I am slightly late getting into it. I trace my fandom to the early `80's when I bought my first novelization... still in jr. high at that point. I was into it enough by the Baker to Davison regeneration in 1981 to catch the first US airings of "Logopolis" and "Castrovalva" (our local PBS station had a MAJOR commitment to the show... they were one of the last stations to drop it in the 1990's) In high school, a bunch of us fans from New Hampshire and Maine started a fan club that lasted for about 10 years. I edited and wrote for the newsletter and wrote quite a bit of fan fiction for the club's "fanzine". One of the other members and I ended up writing a whole series of stories about the adventures of the 10th Doctor (c. 1990's... looong before the real 10th Doctor came about). When I saw the first publicity shots of David Tennant in costume, I nearly choked... He LOOKS like the descriptions of our 10th Doctor... Even the costume is similar!

Doctor Who memorabilia? Well, let's see. I conned my mom into knitting me a Tom Baker scarf, which I still have... all 18 feet of it! I have a TARDIS key (the weird shaped one from the Jon Pertwee era and the 1994 movie). I have all but 2 of the Target/Virgin Books novelizations of the original series. Also have several of the special coffee table books that Target published (ie. their 20th Anniversary book). I have quite a few of the video tapes and DVD's, and managed to record most of the original series over the years off-air/cable. I've got several of the Big Finish Production audios. Those are really well done, and it's neat that they've given Paul McGann a chance to develope the character of the 8th Doctor... And considering that Russell T. Davies has implied that he considers them to be at least partially canonical, they help one pick up on some of the more obscure "easter eggs" he drops into the new series from time to time. The now defunct "Doctor Who Fan Club Of America" used to produce some really neat looking enamal pins, and I have several of those (K-9, the 5th Doctor, the Baker era diamond logo, the Davison era neon logo, etc.) I also have autographed photos from various folks I saw at conventions and/or interviewed (Sylvester McCoy [7th], Sophie Aldred [Ace], Deborah Watling [Victoria Waterfield], Bonnie Langford [Melanie Bush]).

Like I said, I was a pretty hardcore fan back in the day!

rabstark, FYI...somebody out there might complain that some of the specifics related about those photos that can be found online is spoiler material. That's why I colored the text white...a reader can highlight it if they want to be spoiled, but can ignore it if they don't want to be.

And...I'm inspired. I might just go back and watch those 2nd Doctor episodes available on Illusion On Demand.

This is a point, although at this stage the RUMOR at least has been out there for awhile. The FACTS are still at the "BBC being cagey about it" stage. I did go back and spoiler protect my comment, though.

If by chance they have any 1st Doctor stuff you should check that out too. William Hartnell was "fantastic". In a lot of ways, I'll always think of him as "THE" Doctor, even though he's not technically my "favorite" Doctor. He really set the stage for the 40-odd years that have followed.

Speaking of that... Series 4 is an interesting alignment of anniversaries for the show. It's the shows 45th anniversary, and its 30th Series.

Oh, yes, I was smitten as well. It's ok with my husband, he likes David too. Not in a Jack way, of course.

Actually, what is showing on BBCA is season 3 and I think they just finished Season 5 or 6. I have Season 4 in my Netflix Queue. I absolutely LOVE MI-5

Finally more Doctor (not Dr.) Who talk!

For the poster who was wondering how many years this has been around, well it depends how you figure it out. The first episode aired the day of John Kennedy's assaination November 23rd, 1963. So in one way this is the 45th year, but if you count that this season debuts before then then its the 44th. There has been some debate on other forums about this. I did a youtube tribute here. http://youtube.com/watch?v=UyiJVq0c22I

I did this last year, and yes, I do concider McCoy the Doctor until 1996, and McGann till 2005. There are plenty of hot rumors going around, but non you can beleve about the 'gap' year coming up after this some think will have a few past Doctors in it, I hope so.

Aint it Cool announced today that Doctor Who returns on SciFi in the US on April 18th.

With the Christmas Special airing first, and season four staring on the 25th, that puts us about three weeks behind the UK, right?

Given I wasn't born, I guess I didn't start watching until the good Doctor had been round for a while

Fascinating....it debuted the day of the assassination? That explains the first current episode! Rose goes to an expert on The Doctor and he shows her photos of the Doctor throughout history. One of the pictures is the Doctor in the crowds at the Kennedy assassination. Anybody catch that? That explains that picture....insider's reference!

We love David as the Doctor. We absolutely love when he starts with one of his weird ramblings and says totally off the wall things. Then he kind of trails off...mumbling. This cracks my whole family up!!!!! He's just too adorable! My husband, having watched Doctor Who as a kid and I could probably both claim that he is "our Doctor". He's just so perfectly suited for it.

Torchwood....I so love the concept of the show...but seeing men kissing men and women kissing women and all of the sex...it has ruined it for me. I liked Jack on Doctor Who and Torchwood just ruined his character for me. I watch it with my husband because he loves it. It disgusts me that the same person who brings us Doctor Who can bring to us so much uncalled for sex. If they took that out of the picture it would be a really good show.

We don't watch Torchwood, period. I think we've seen less than a minute of it the whole time it has been running over here.

Good for you! I wish we hadn't now....Someone said there was a rumour that they were going to make a clean version of it. I had hoped it was true, because it would be a really good show then.

Yea, and its been noted that three Doctors have been on earth that same day, but not crossing each other. The First as he left, the Seventh shows up just as the First leaves, and the Ninth. So, the Doctor can seem to be on earth in two places at once with out conflict.

I saw a trailer for Dr Who on tv yesterday and it seemed really good ~ Russell T Davies said it would have dieters reaching for the chips

Still not sure about Catherine Tate ~ I guess she can only grow on me

Same here.

It's strange, I like her comedy stuff, but just can't quite "embrace" her in this role. Ah well.

The BBC was supposed to be making a "clean version" for airing in the UK at earlier hours. I think the article was on Outpost Gallifrey.

Yes, and BBC America is not airing it, which makes me mad. I have been able to see the cleaner version (can't say how), and there still is inuendo in it, but enough to make a kid not aware I think of what is going on. This season though has been interesting, because they still play Jake with a guy, but he's developing feelings for the female lead. Also, his past has revealed that he was married and his wife and son are missing.

I had hoped that BBC-A would air the clean version, but given that they're airing Torchwood at 9 pm and 10 pm Saturday nights, and given that they run some other racy programs, I guess the programming managers didn't think it was needed.

The Jack/and-guys-and-girls-and-aliens-with-other-types-of-gender-identity stuff - everyone that is watching gets it already. They don't need to keep throwing it in the viewer's face for either shock value or to show how "tolerant" everyone associated with the show is. I'm already seeing Jack and Iago (sp?) shippers on the web who think that Iago is to Jack what Rys is to Eve.

And as far as the Jack and Evie tease, what's the point? Just to show that Jack likes girls, too? Evie is now married and Jack is not a one "person" kind of guy for very long, apparently. Jack managing to sustain a marriage or any long term intimate relationship is questionable based on how his character has been presented.

Ok... the thread title is about Dr Who... I don't watch Torchwood and have no desire to watch it... please, if you want to discuss it, can you take it to another thread?

Torchwood and Dr Who are two very different programmes, linked by a couple of people...

Torchwood is now officially another thread!

I loved the Christmas episode. We watched it on-line....don't know where from. My hubby found it.
